All these negative comments? Go drive one and then post some feedback as I have just tried one as it is hard not to be impressed. It looks way better in the metal than pics. I borrowed one for 2 days and really enjoyed it. It was the standard m135i car with a technology pack (head up, wireless charging and adaptive lights they said). It was raining in the UK and it puts full power down off the line; instantly. My old M240i(I loved) coupe couldn't do that unless totally dry. It sounds good and does pop/bang outside on the overrun and then in sport it has louder sound piped inside the cabin with some electronic trickery which I found you can turn off in the idrive if you don't like it. Also the new interior is a huge step up, love the new seats/digital dash/infotainment system. The 2 litre is punchy as hell and the gearbox in this is different to my old 8 speed zf box. That was smoother true, but this in sport mode is more savage up the gears, really shoves the car forward on each shift and put a smile on my face! Also averages about 10mpg more that the old car on my usual work drive. Whether we all like it or not, the way all cars are going until we have better electric infrastructure in the uk anyway. I don't think m135i or m140i customers will have their heads turned easily as that straight 6 motor is one of the great engines but I'd still suggest trying one as it really is a great real-world quick m lite hot hatch (personal opinion). People are so extremely negative about this car which I hate. Did mercedes have a 6 cylinder hot hatch? No did the competitor Audi S3 have a 6 cylinder? No. Did the Golf R have a 6 cylinder? Yes but that was 2006 or so. Since then they also weren’t able to keep it under the emission regulations. People need to be blessed that we had the chance to experience a 6 cylinder hot hatch from BMW from 2011 until 2019. There just isn’t any other brand which managed to hold that out until now. Only bmw managed to keep a 6 cylinder engine in the 1 series hot hatch. Now the BMW M135i is just a hot hatch like all its competitiors. A 4 cylinder fwd. is there something wrong with that? No, because it drives great, sounds great, is great.

I think it's a perfectly decent car if you're NOT looking to sell your old M135i/M140i and buy a newer car. For eg. if it's your first M performance 1 series then you'll really like it.

The thing is now the 135i is just another hothatch, but more expensive and it comes with zero equipment, so you have to spend another 6K at least to have some minimun features. And I'm not even talking about how weird it looks to me, because everyone have different likes

aerobost you have a good point, but look at every premium car these days and you’re digging deep if you tick a lot of options. BMW aren’t even the worst. You can 50% more on a Porsche if select most of the options. To be fair most BMWs come pretty well specced without options these days. In other words you don’t need most of the options. Even stuff like apple car play isn’t a need, it’s just a convenience. My 8 year old 3 series doesn’t have it and I’m quite happy without it.

And it's fully loaded as standard with kit! I borrowed one last weekend and everything from LED headlights to 10"touch screen media and digital cockpit plus 8 speed auto is standard! Even seat heating and Alcantara race style seats! It was excellent to drive too, and I used to have an M240i (which had a beautiful straight 6), yet it could not launch off the line like this did last week in the wet (it went like crazy in the dry mind you). Very impressed and I got 38mpg on a 25 miles run to work, my old car manages late 20's at best 👍

The simple fact is this isn't as fast as the older m140i. The m135i improves in a lot of areas like space practicality mpg and tech. Drive the m140i and none of that stuff matters as you get noise and speed in spades

And in the cold and wet compared to the m140i this car makes the m140i look like a dinosaur. Hence I'm trading in my m140i for the new m135i. BMW couldn't continued making a outdated design to keep hardcore enthusiasts happy not when rivals are doing it better....you want rwd 6 pot then buy bigger cars or assuming you can afford one a m2 competition

It's misunderstood, that the following Generation always has to be faster than the previous one. It's about the changes in general! :) Not a really big fan of this car either💁‍♂️

@@rfp3089 This is your opinion. But in general you have some kind of "evolution" in every new vechicle gen. That means also performance. Look at the M models. Every ne Gen is faster, lighter, has more power than the previous one. To summarize it the current 1 series is trash. Front wheel driven Hyundai look a like!

@Gas Pedal Subscribe Even if they bring it back, which I find doubtful, it'll probably be based on the same front/all-wheel-drive platform, with a transverse 2.0L engine. Maybe they'll do what Mercedes-Benz has done and take it to the 400-hp mark, but it'll still be the 4-cylinder powerplant. They definitely won't be using an inline-6.

From reviews and such more people are happier with the 118i than they are with the m135i. Not that it's bad just people generally prefer the older m140i with rwd and 6cyl engine.

@@johnjackson12 I understand why but that engine is a big moneypit of taxes, fuel consumption and insurance cost. Rwd sure is fun but not always faster in the corners which matters too. The 118i engine is a really smooth and peppy engine though so no regrets. My motorcycle will fill the fun and speed part for me

@@linserr90 I own a 340i currently and the tax isn't bad at least in the UK. Fuel consumption is very bad in town around 20mpg at best. On a run 45mpg is achievable pretty easy which isn't all that bad. RWD is fun but insurance companies don't like it at all. I do get the idea with the m135i but BMW had something unique before. The only 6cyl small hatch and only one with RWD. now it's the same as it's competition.

@@johnjackson12 Nice, I was looking for a M140i myself before I did the math and saw the new generation. It's a shame that these big engines are disappearing because of EU regulations. Here in Belgium it would cost me between 3000-4000 euros a year without fuel cost, that's a bit too much for us. Personally I don't mind fwd drive because in this car while driving it didn't bother me. Sharp in the corners without understeer. I think BMW is trying to show that they can compete with other fwd models and maybe even do it better

@@linserr90 this is the first RWD car I've had the others all FWD and 99% of the time makes no difference. Do get better traction off the line but don't drive with the systems fully off. On the road with kids in the back a twitchy rear end isn't what u want. Have played around in the rain tho :) lol

No, I think it's a standard 530d G30. 540i would have M-Package as standard (this has not) and 550i has two big square exhaust pipes (this one has two round ones).
