I already know how to do all this stuff but I still love a good DIY video, just wanted to add you don't need to completely unscrew the metal side panel (5:30) as it will come right off with the plastic piece it is attached to. You only need to unscrew the forward most screw on that metal trim piece. Great video, cheers!
Thanks Mr. Mark. I am awaiting delivery of my 2019 GS HP so I was looking for someone to show how basic maintenace was..... I really appreciate your time and effort... Cheers from USA
that's ok bud and you enjoy your new bike, I had a few of these GS's now with videos on here and if it was not for me being a short ass i'd probably still have one as I really did enjoy this one better than my LC but do keep looking at the new 1250 GS but maybe in the short frame version lol enjoy and take care on the roads bud
@@marksavage I'm 5'11 and I went with low suspension...Its the ease I wanted, and if later I feel it's a bit low I change the seat and put the suspension at highest setting it's a win win...cheers P.s. when I say I change the seat is not buying one you can adjust the height in case you dont know lol.
Gotta say...good video! That air filter is a breeze compared to doing it on a Tiger 1200... It's fun removing the entire gas tank and all side panels, map sensor, etc lol Definitely enjoyed it! Well done!
I'm riding a tiger 800 at the mo and will have to do this soon lol, I have done this on a fjr 1300 video on here and that's the same tank off and so on well worth a view thanks for watching as said I have many other bmw videos and other bike videos you might like to watch mark
Looks like BMW and Honda are on to the same gig, surround all the maintenance stuff in plastic, so they can charge you another 30 minutes labour on your basic servicing. Nicely demonstrated fella, will save a few pennies for people.
GTs Garage thanks bud and yes £175 for an oil change at Bmw and £100 an hour labour Like you bud I try and help others save a few £s Also had good feedback on the Yamaha fjr service video so all helps Not worked on your bike yet maybe I’ll get one , one day Keep safe bud and unlike me don’t drop it lol
Just got a 2013 GS so thanks for the video. But I was really impressed to learn that the screw driver, part of the bike tool kit, which surprisingly was intact on my bike, has the key to open the oil filler. The driver has a handle with the right shape to fit that wierd cover. Only Germans eh!
Thanks so much Mark! Good little tutorial. If its any help for future ref, you dont have to take the metal bit off the plastic panelling. Found that out in anger haha :P
Good video. But if you have the original toolkit under the seat. there is a screwdriver grip , the shape of that plastic grip actually fits the oil fill cap ...just my two pennies
Great video Mark! Thank you. Real quick, My '12 R1200GSA is hitting only on the left cylinder. I was cruising home on the highway and the rt. cylinder just dropped out. Plugs are good and I swapped uppers with lowers and right to left and confirmed they all spark while cranking as held to the frame. I bought two new primary coils and installed them with no change and even swapped in the event I got a bad brand new part. I do have an O2 sensor #1 code (271A) that comes up in Moto Scan so I removed them both, cleaned them and swapped them and the same code returned. I swapped lower coils, though they didn't fit I still got them connected and snapped in with no change. I confirmed both injectors spray fuel in a good pattern while cranking the bike but bought a new one for the right side anyway and installed in to no avail. The throttle body valve does turn with throttle twist as I could feel it with my fingers. The bike will fire up on just the left cylinder but the right cylinder, with spark and fuel does not want to fire! Thanks for reading so far sir, and if you would please let me know what else I could try I would greatly appreciate it sir. TY
You've done what I would have done ! Yet it still doesn't run on that side How odd Either valve or piston failure I wouldn't pay any more out bud but sounds like it's a bigger problem than you or I can sort sorry to say bud
1:57 how is your hand just resting on the header pipe like its nothing with thin gloves on after a proper ride to get it to operating temperature? I have to call bullshit on that small part of the video because I know for sure that the header pipe would still be blazing hot and even touching it accidentally would cause you to flinch from the burn(talking from experience). Other than that small thing, amazing video helped me a lot especially with the plugs.
DMac of Queens It doesn't have to be BS. It is good if the engine is warm when you change oil but it doesn't have to be smoking hot. Maybe he let it cool down f. a while and then changed oil? The exhaust pipes get very hot but they also cool down rather quickly.
Mark very informative vids . The question id like a 1200gs but reading to many horror stories of final drive and abs problems have you had any grief yet???got my eye on a low millage non abs 2006 . Your views would be most welcome!!
to be honest I have had 4 and videos on here and not had any problems with any of them, just the newest one I bought 2016 the gear box was crunchy but still an amazing bike, the best one was this one for the best ride and all round enjoyably have a look for my other bmw gs videos , type in bmw mark savage to be fair with all of them it was me that was the problem as being a short ass and the Yarmouth bike ride out again was my fault mark
I don't understand why you have to warm the oil up before you drain it. I know this is standard practice on cars and bikes but when you think about it, the oil ends up in the sump after a ride. Therefore the oil has always been warm and thinned so all of it would be in the sump. So why bother?
FYI: Under your bike seat is a small tool kit, the key is the screw driver, disconnect the metal part and you will see that the screw driver handle itself is actually the tool to unscrew your oil cap.
they do normally but not with this one so had to do it the old way lol thanks for watching I have a few more videos on the bmw you might like to watch mark
Hi there Mark, could you share me the oil and air filter part numbers? Also could you tell me where to look for the oil filter removal tool and what brand? Thanks in advance and great video!!
il try and find them later for you but to be honest e bay is the best place and most sellers not allow you to put in your bike and the reg of your bike to get the right parts ]ive even messaged them to confirm they will fit and they have always answered back but all in it will save you a lot of money doing it yourself and following my videos thanks for watching mark
I’m sure they were iridium NGK DCPR8EiX spark plugs to fit the single camshaft BMW R1200GS Was trying to look at old part work But type in year and make on e bay bud otherwise stick to standard
Neat little vid mate,a quick Q have you ridden the 1000 Strom, and 1200 Triumph, like to know how they compare to the 2006 BMW 1200 you had, ;-) Looking forward to the fog light fitting ;-) Nice tats btw is that your job ??? Ride Safe Baza ;-)
Baza765 hi bud yes I have ridden both and found the V storm a little wanting and tinnie as for the tiger 1200 it’s a great bike but so heavy more like the land rover of bike compare to the gs being the Range Rover As for tats I did a load of them myself as in my early videos on here when I uploaded a few videos on how to tattoo Thanks for watching Bud Please like share and sub Mark
Baza765 Lol get her to watch my video with my wife when she talks about being a pillion It’s an honest review from her Just have a Look through my other Bmw videos bud It’s well worth a watch Mark
where can I learn to become a bmw bike mechanic? would like a change of career.. particularly on the GS, GT touring and adventure side. thanks for the videos
A good career choice In todays world you would have to go to college etc and apply as a trainee that way But maybe try to work for a local bike garage and learn that way Lots of home work bud
Budget and looks Me the 1150 and honda look dated and both other sides of the spectrum 1200gs hold there money but all in a great bike Maybe look at the yamaha fjr, triumph trophy , triumph tiger , honda pan , kawasaki versys 1000, All good bikes and all of them on my channel But comes down to what you want them to do bud Weekend out, work, touring!
oh right no ive never done that as most filters for bikes are on there side and that would get a bit messy lol so i aways start and run for a bit then check and fill take care bud
@@marksavage if on side of bike car etc...you put a bit in oil filter, it will soak it up... then be ok if on side just don't go over board if on side...😎
Hi mark I’m looking to buy a pretty low mileage 30000klm 2006 model ,are they any issues I should be worried ( abs unit is been serviced) or I should prefer a 2009 and onward model. Thnx
indicators may pe you off being on both sides but, all in great bikes gear box and gear change and to be honest I had a few and my newest one 2017 was the worst gear change and the 2011 was amazing !! yes abs is one point to keep an eye on and good service history and 30k is good as clutch about 50k and that's a lot of money and time
At 4:00 and at 4:32, it could be worse. You could be riding a motorcycle with Lucas electrics which means you could be looking at a parked motorcycle instead of riding it. You know, Lucas, the Prince of Darkness. LOL
its been a long time since anyone tried to fill up the oil filter then fit it while all the oil comes back out so no bud I don't try that on any of my bikes or the 100s of services I done also most are horizontal fillers and if not they will fill if at the bottom any way this is why I always say start the engine after filling and re check after the first ride
