Today, I decided to take some time to talk about my beloved 2016 BMW 328D Sports Wagon. Although I'm massively bias towards my own car, I truly believe the 328D is one of the best daily drivers a car enthusiast can buy and, in this video, I attempt to explain why.

I got 702 miles on a single tank on a recent roadtrip. Still had 6 miles left on the tank at fill up.

This is true. I drive 60% City and 40% hwy and I hold 40.1 mpg. I drive with ac/heat. This car on the hwy going 80-85 gets 45-40mpg

Check the timing chain. The N47 engine that was installed in this 328d is notorious for chain failure and repair costs can be high.

Chain issues after 2011 were fixed. They were prevalent on earlier N47's.

you might want to check the intake manifold My moms f30 D had a recall on something with the coolant system and could cause a intake leak. Can’t remember exactly off the top my head

it was the egr valves getting stuck open and causing the plastic intake manifold to melt and sometimes catch fire.

The EGR cooler has been the subject of a recall for years and evidently BMW has trouble importing the cooling component stateside. Previous owner of my car was irritated by diesel fumes in the passenger cabin and had tired waiting over parts (eventually procured in the UK) and I got the repaired car "ready to drive". The defective EGR cooler may cause a portion of the intake manifold to melt so it's included in the recall based on condition. Some of these 3 series F30 diesels had caught fire spectacularly in South Korea and this had been covered extensively by the press. Made the car rarer than it need to have been here in the US and Canada.

My obstacle is that diesel fuel while creates less CO2 and is more efficient per gallon, creates more dark matter, NOx, and SOx than gasoline.

This was a year ago, I'm thinking about picking up a 328d with 84,000 miles. How have your experience been up to this date? Still great?

@@TomatoWithARifle I actually bought the car. I might upload a couple videos about it throughout the year. After looking at the big picture, I realized that the miles are ok. The car is in almost 99.9% perfect shape with the only blemish being a small superficial scuff on the back bumper. I did, however, decide to get a 4 year 40,000 mile extended warranty. The warranty cost me almost $3,900 which ironically is about the cost of a timing chain replacement on the N47, but I saw it worth the price as it also covers all engine and transmission components. I didn’t have to look hard for the 328d Sports Wagon as there are no more than 15 for sale on autotempest if I had to take a guess. And the trim I wanted (blue with cream interior, 20 spoke multi-spoke wheels, and Luxury package) was literally a one of one as far as my search yielded. I didn’t realize at the time, but these 328d Sports Wagons are pretty much unicorns. I would say go take a look at the one you saw, make sure it’s decently sorted and if the car is good to go, buy it. Just keep in mind the maintenance and maybe get a warranty (doesn’t have to be as expensive as mine) or just put money aside. But id strongly consider it. They are nice cars.

@@TomatoWithARifle I went ahead and pulled the trigger. Glad I did. I did have a SCR metering line failure which triggered an engine light about 3 or 4 weeks after buying the car, but I repaired it myself in about an hour and cleared the code. She’s been awesome since. Doesn’t get anywhere in a hurry though lol.

@@Soh90 i bought the i was looking at too.... only thing i had to repair was the clockspring. the horn and functions on steering wheel stopped working. $150 part on ebay and swapped it out myself. only added about 4k miles since but no problems yet. i got a stage 1 tune and it helps a lot. took her out for a ski trip in pretty bad condition on its crappy all terrain tires it had on and it did good. didnt have to put on chains. was rolling with the 4x4s

i own a 2015 328d sport wagon, i bought it when it had 64,000 miles. it currently has 128,xxx. There have been no mechanical issues that prevented the car from driving. I will say this, The car is boring to drive and is so heavy that spirited driving almost feels like a chore. The gas mileage is the BEST thing about this car. But it has many downsides. For one. The 8 speed trans is constantly trying to find what gear to be in to deliver optimum power and shifts. The AC is not the best. The fact that i have to pull the door handle twice or press a button to escape my vehicle irritates the heck out of me. On top of that, if you have the "kick Under" Tailgate, go try to wash your car with the keys anywhere near the vehicle. The Trunk opens in the middle of washing the car. Quite annoying. The car has torque and its a little lacking on power. For an ECONOMY vehicle, it is an outstanding ECONOMY car, but it is nowhere near a sportscar. They shouldnt have put such stiff suspension on the car in my opinion. The car shifts so hard in sport + mode that i rarely use it. Its trying to makeup for the lack of power with overly agressive shifts. The biggest issue. Everytime you open the door while in drive or reverse the car slams into park making it impossible to lean your head out to go up ramps, down ramps, back up something or escape a carjacking. I could go on about the rest of the issues but ill stop there. Id trade my 2015 328d for a low mileage 06 volvo xc70 cross country any day as far as function over form is concerned. also, youre wrong about the rarity of the car. There are only 3000 in the states.

I also own a 328d Sports Wagon. There's an option in the settings menu to prevent the car from locking after you start driving. Then you don't have to worry about needing to pull the door handle twice or push a button :) If you're complaining about the lack of power, you should look into getting a KermaTDI tune; they claim up to 80whp and 140wtq gains with no other modifications. I'm hoping to get that next summer, I've heard it totally transforms the car. BimmerCode also allows for so much more customization that the factory settings don't allow, it's been super handy for me too. Totally worth the $50.

@@imquokkacola YEA... someone intelligent enough to comment without pissing and moaning. If you have to bitch about it, why do you own one? We''ve got MANY TDI's in the family. Upgrading to Malone or Kerma are great OPTIONS, huge HP/TQ in F/E increases! Thanks for the comments and pointing out options.

if you get a kerma stage 2, then you will have the equivalent of a 335d. I had a 328i and moved onto a 328d. the diesel has better take off speed, but the 4wd on the petrol made highway passing super easy. with the kerma stage 2 tune, the hp is increased by 80+ and the transmission is tuned perfectly to safely get all the power out of it. It'll make your deisel a better diesel and then better than the 328i at high speeds. you don't have to add or delete parts and it's completely reversible. I would highly recommend it. It'll make your car perfect.

As far as I understand, the EGR cooler recall is the biggest issue with these engines in this specific chassis. The pre LCI models have some transmission issues but my car is at 116,000 miles and the EGR issue was the only thing I’ve had to deal with

@@CarlosHernandez-gc6no I haven’t been informed of any issues like that for my specific car, but I have seen older BMW models with the same diesel engine have timing chain issues so I’m sure it’s at least possible with cars like mine
