BMW 335i N54 Compression Test Failed

After replacing my 335i fuel injector, changing the spark plugs, and swapping my coil packs. My cylinder 3 misfire persisted. This is a huge deviation from normal BMW 335i misfire remedies. I then knew something was a lot more serious. I decided to go ahead and do a compression test to make sure compression was still present. I bought a compression testing tool from amazon (linked below), and completed my first ever compression test. The numbers was not in my favor, so time to overhaul my n54 or swap it with another.

Did the correct spark plug adapter come with the kit you linked? Having this same issue :(

So from the last video did you replace that injector with a new one and I'm assuming it did not fix it? And before you did your injector were you smelling gas when it 1st started mis firing and throwing that code? Having an issue with cylinders 2 and 3 myself and I just bought the car 3 weeks ago. Sucks

Nice video I am curious what the verdict will be it's odd that cylinder four is also a little low makes me think possible head gasket issue. I would try putting 30 cc of oil into cylinder crank a couple times without the spark plug and do a compression test again. If it comes up it's rings or head gasket if it's unchanged it's valves

Yea that’s what I forgot to do was add some oil and redo it. It ended up being the rings not sealing once I had the head off.

@@nOshi2x Now that you have the head off how bad does the cylinder bore look fuel washed rings can reek havoc on the cylinder. If the bore is still round and not scratched you might be able to use a bottle brush hone and put some new rings on the piston and be good to go.

Yea looked to have to scoring so have it apart still have to bring it to the machine shop to cleaning it up for me. Afterwards just going to build it for more power. But mainly a back burner project till I get enough funds to finish it. But I swapped in a donor motor in for the mean time.

When you have no compression at a cylindre like you at the number 3 what do you do next ? What is the next step ?

What about the valves, they could be leaking compression from there

Zero compression in one cylinder is likely caused by a sticky piston ring. Should have poured solvent (Seafoam or Berryman B12)down that cylinder 3 and let it soak overnight.

@@nOshi2x Somebody recommended to pull it before cranking the engine with ignition parts unplugged so that the fuel injectors don’t fire and no spark happens. Just found out N54 engines have an electronic throttle body; pulling the DME relay would disable it so we would not be testing compression with a WOT. But typical procedure on any car is to disable the fuel pump by removing its fuse and de-pressurize the rail by turning on the car before pulling out the sparks and coil and letting the car die on its own due to it not getting access to more fuel.

More then likely it's a valve train Issue when it reads zero like that. Did u try adding oil to see if it raises any?

You are low on all cylinders you should have 170+, just remove the head grind all the valves, clean the head, almost 100% that is just bad valve seal

Man, idk what is wrong. I've got the same gauge. I'm getting a zero reading on all cylinders. This can't be for real since the car runs. Think I have a bad gauge or would oil make any difference ?

Complex Seven Industries thanks for quick reply. Your the only one on RU-vid with compression test and swap for 335i. Good stuff!! After changing my dme, spark plugs, could and Injectors my car finally ran great . I went to store and got two galons of gas started her up and back to terrible idle and misfires. Cleaned valves changed vcg since then and nada. It'll misfire on cylinders but when I clear the code, the car idles just fine. I'm hoping my issue were these Chinese Injectors that I bought. Got some fcp euros today. Had to give u my n54 life story:/. Praying it's not the engine. Swapping looks difficult

Complex Seven Industries I was getting constant misfires on cylinders 2, 3 and 4. After cleaning the valves it's it moved to five and I found that Injector to be leaking. I did code the injectors and all. It's been sitting for about 5 months with on 80k miles, it's very stressful switching out parts constantly. I did work on the car with the injector caps off, so I'm thinking dust or particles may have got in there and clogged them up. New injectors and spark plugs come today , I give up on life if this doesn't work lol

Complex Seven Industries man oh man looks like she's running pretty stable now ! Some index 12s definitely helped along with another set of spark plugs. Gonna be safe and get ANOTHER set of coils too lol. Thanks again man for help. Check out link it's pretty quick. My set up sounds like a n55... Sort of. Sound is Def beefier and got rid of that standard high pitchtone and high rpm. I don't have charge pipes or downpipes yet , butSounds more agressive in person of course .

Complex Seven Industries hopefully you guys are still active, I’ve got a persistent misfire in cylinder 3. Done the coils, plugs, and blasting. The misfire only occurs when up to operating temperature, what would your next step be?

You might have “disable” the injector but you still got pressure in the rails and the pump still pushing gas, you just shortened the life of all 6 injectors

The pump is on when the car is on. The injectors always have pressure behind them regardless if they are firing or not.

Battery was dead and will say low charge or something along those lines on the idrive. So if the alternator fails, more than likely the battery is done also or will need to be jumped, or put a new battery in.

@@nOshi2x I have cylinders 5.6 miss fire but it drives good still feels with a lot of power. Ima compression test it tomorrow

Yea definitely but if it’s driving fine and no loss of power doubt a bent valve is present. But never know anything is possible.
