Hi Thomas - I love leather and was ignorant to think it came from the leftover skins of meat we eat - I feel so stupid! www.care2.com/causes/the-shocking-truth-about-leather-no-its-not-a-meat-byproduct.html We all know what leather is, but how often do we stop to think about where it actually comes from - or, more importantly, who? You only have to mention fur and the most people will rave about how cruel, barbaric and inhumane the practice is. But bring up leather, and the only protest you’ll likely hear is how there’s no other material that lets their feet breath, or how they wouldn’t be caught dead wearing oil-based plastic shoes - as if that’s the only alternative. Thanks to the widespread awareness about the cruelty involved in fur production, it’s now largely rejected by consumers worldwide. And that’s why we need a huge push to shed the light on the reality of leather production. Just like fur, leather is also the skin of an animal, and these animals are equally deserving of our help. By far, most leather is sourced from cows, and although this material is easy to spot, it can just as easily be overlooked. From clothing and accessories like belts and handbags, to furniture and car seats, leather is found everywhere. Most people are led to believe that leather is a byproduct of the meat industry - that it’s simply a “leftover,” and if we don’t use it, it will go to waste. This is a common misconception - and one that I used to believe myself. The truth is that much of the leather sold today comes from animals killed primarily for their skins. Leather is not a byproduct, and it isn’t produced in efforts to minimize waste. It’s produced because it is a highly profitable and lucrative business. A cow’s skin is approximately 10 percent of her total value, making it the most profitable part of her body. Surprisingly, leather actually makes the meat industry more sustainable - as selling skins is very profitable, while meat isn’t always so - not the other way around. The majority of leather comes from India’s cows, who are abused, beaten and poisoned in the production process. As India forbids the slaughter of cows, these poor, innocent animals are forced to endure brutal and grueling journeys where they are confronted with an unimaginable end. When traveling by train, up to 900 cows are crammed into a wagon intended to hold a maximum of 80 to 100 animals, and upon arrival 400 to 500 come out dead. On some routes, cows are tied up and taken on foot. The cows are not allowed to rest or drink, and workers beat the animals across their hip bones, break their tails and torment them by rubbing hot chili peppers and tobacco in their eyes - all in a cruel effort to keep them moving. It’s not only cows that are suffering, though. Goats, pigs, sheep, lambs, horses, deer, kangaroos, snakes, alligators and elephants are also all among the victims of the leather industry. Perhaps even more alarming is the fact that China, the world’s leading exporter of leather, skins an estimated 2 million dogs and cats each year. Consumers may unknowingly purchase the resulting products due to mislabeling and inaccurate indications of the origin. As if that isn’t scary enough, another particularly prized form of leather is ‘slink’, which is made from the skin of unborn calves. If you don’t want to contribute to the brutal leather industry, you don’t have to. There are so many cruelty-free alternatives available - both natural and synthetic - from companies such as MooShoes, Beyond Skin, Vegan Essentials, Alternative Outfitters and Vaute Couture. When buying any product, always read the label and do your best to support ethical companies that care about their impact on the planet.

Indeed! Thank you so much for your appreciation, really means a lot. And such a good point with fur indeed, everyone knows that fur is cruel, but there is no difference between fur and leather indeed as for the cruelty!

I love a convertible - nice side profile on this 8er; and good suspension. If I had the money and inclination I think I'd take the i8 Roadster with its more comfy seats - that we watched you Review this time last year in Majorca! More of a unique driving experience, an intelligent design, thrilling on a B-road, refined on a motorway and silent in town! Much appreciate your channel.

The 840i 6 cylinder is plenty fast and fine for the coupe or gran coupe but in the convertible you need the 850I V8. That sound with the top down is amazing and worth the extra money!

Lash195 its the face proportions for me. The concept one was perfect because the grille was so low relative to the head lights and the lights were angled more upward. The best part about the concept was how the front opening came up to the middle of the grilles. The proportions just looked amazing. The actual version has extremely basic and predictable proportions. It doesnt look bad but its just so boring and predictable.

The usual high quality review and filming you can expect from Autogefühl. Great job. Got any vacancies? I like this BMW double kidney I’m not usually conservative when it comes to design and styling but this double kidney is better definitely less is more; the X8 d k is hideous IMO and I think BMW could do worse than adopting this d k across their entire range. Thomas you looked like Jonas had given you a time out when you were sat in the back with the roof up very 😂 David Gray excellent rock/pop singer songwriter highly recommend his White Ladder album. @autogefuehl 5 лет назад
We have researched this issue for many years now so please take your time to go through our extensive resources stated below as they answer every single question we have yet received concerning this matter. At Autogefühl, we have already received several thousands (!) comments, messages and mails that more and more people want to combine enjoying their car with reducing the environmental impact at the same time. We believe that sustainable luxury is possible or at least we should do everything to support that. Those many thousand people confirming this trend, motivate us to give you the most authentic information and background on the product parts. It is not about what you bought in the past, and it is not about blaming anyone, it is about what you decide in the future and what you can decide and influence as a customer. So we want you to have all information that you need for a decision you later enjoy and like best yourself. In Summer 2017, Tesla motors has decided to be the first manufacturer to go all the way with sustainable seat materials, only offering fabric/cloth seats or leatherette seats in different colours. They have banned all real leather from the seating surface and at the steering wheel in the white trim or on demand. So Tesla shows where the industry will and must be heading, just like they went forward with electrification first. Check out our special video addressing car CEOs as a first summary and also see conditions of animal skin production: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LNSUzZXzpdc.html List of practical reasons against animal skin seats: 1. animal skin seats are often sold as an expensive option, by going for base trim level seats you can save a lot of money and get a better price-performance-deal (often the manufacturers claim that animal leather is top of luxury because they can earn the best money with it) 2. animal skin seats get hot in summer and you stick to the seat, probably you need seat cooling 3. they get very cold in winter and you need seat heating 4. on cloth or microfibre surfaces, you basically don’t need seat heating nor cooling 5. animal skin seats wear out very fast and look like an old sofa 6. if you want leather look or need seats that can be wiped clean easier, the leatherette (faux leather) surfaces are meanwhile highly evolved and it is possible that it feels even softer and better than anything else (See our Tesla Model X review ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-y2wNGFKa4M0.html) So Tesla shows a good example for that and as described, non-leather materials are now standard for ALL Tesla 7. More manufacturer names for their good alternatives: Mercedes MBTex/Artico for leatherette, Dinamica for microfibre. BMW Sensatec, Toyota Sof-Tex, Lexus Nu-Luxe (all faux leather) To the environmental reasons: 1. The way the cows and other intelligent and social animals are raised and held are not according to the basic values that we all share (also see videos below) 2. The factory farming industry can be accounted for at least 40 % of climate emissions and thus is (according to numerous sources you can look up) the number one reason for climate change and environmental destruction. It is the number one reason for deforestation, two thirds of all agricultural land on earth is used for growing animal food crops. If you would feed humans directly by using the agricultural land, you could produce much more food for everyone. See this interesting essay for more on climate emissions background: www.worldwatch.org/files/pdf/Livestock%20and%20Climate%20Change.pdf 3. It is not only cows who are suffering, but also the environment and to a big part also humans. Think of slavery-like working conditions in slaughterhouses (there are plenty of documentaries about this) or think of chemically altered drinking water in animal skin production villages as also seen in the video footage. 4. The discussion, for which body part the cow is killed first, is very patronizing. But if you really think it would be important why someone gets killed in first place: There are many productions where the cow is killed for the skin first, sometimes even while still being (part-)alive, the skin is the most profitable single part of the body. 5. So even if a cow gets theoretically killed for meat first, in every case you give additional money to an industry that relies on killing, pollutes the environment and harms people with chemicals. Let's say you are standing at the meat counter. And you ask for the leg of the cow. The butcher tells you: "You can eat that without worrying, the cow was slaughtered for the neck first". The next customer demands the neck. The butcher tells him: "It's not your fault, the cow was slaughtered for the belly". A the next customer demands the hide, what answer does he get? You see, that argument of "byproduct" comes from the meat and leather industry to cover up that you contribute to killing no matter which part of the body you buy. 6. To the often said argument, animal skin would just be a byproduct, please google/youtube "leather is not a byproduct" you will find plenty of information. A good overview on all those issues can also be found here: adaptt.org/ To “But leatherette is not sustainable due to petrochemical production” 1. Indeed some fabrics and micro fibres are oil based, however most oil is spent on energy production, heating and fuel. The share of oil used for artificial cloth etc. is very very small. 2. If you look at the whole production process, the leatherette is way more sustainable than the leather produce. Even if you leave the ethical aspect aside, here is the official calculation of the CO2-Output animal skin vs leatherette (different kinds of leatherette): Leather 17 kg CO2/m² PVC leatherette 10 kg CO2/m² Acella Eco natural leatherette 8,5 kg CO2/m² Benova (PUR leatherette): 8 kg CO2/m² So by using the latest high-tech leatherette, you even the CO2-emissions are cut in half! 3. The best to-come solution are indeed plant-based materials like Pinatex (based on pineapple leaves) or new materials based on mycelia (roots of mushrooms) or other innovative natural products. That’s the future. A great extensive report is also to be found here: moneywisedriver.com/do-vegan-cars-exist-a-guide-to-non-leather-interiors/ More special video episodes: 1. A initial special video from Autogefühl considering the use of leather can be found here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8f91KgbVbJQ.html 2. And another one right here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tMNgcLE0LDU.html 3. Furthermore, you’ll find the footage of leather production also here, where people are walking in chemicals etc. and animals have to watch their friends being slaughtered in front of their eyes: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JipYvuDsI6s.html timecode starting 27:46 4. This is another video which very well summarizes the torture of leather production, shots taken at big farms which directly produce for the automotive industry: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OgHs239bAnE.html 5. Please note that those videos are made by well-known journalists and cameramen who were not influenced by any animal welfare organisation, they supply their footage to the animal rights groups of course. I partly know the creators of the video footage personally and they are all authentic. You don’t have to search long to find cruel production environments anyway. Manufacturers reactions: We started the very first inquiry years ago, with the result that car manufacturers do not reveal their sources of animal skin AT ALL. If it all would be clean and happening without harm, why don’t they show it to us whereas they are showing us every other detail of their products? They have good reason not to, because there is no such thing as a clean animal skin production without harming cows, humans and the environment. The only thing a manufacturer can do is increase their effort for a better future, and we are helping with in-depth talks and interviews by presenting the increasing customer demand for sustainable luxury. Tesla was the first one to react in a major way now. So meanwhile, we more often also get feedback that a lot of manufacturers are working on leather-free interiors and are aware of the situation. E.g. Bentley, Mini and Kia have started vegan car interior programmes. Besides Tesla, Mercedes already shows major choices for sustainable interiors, you always have to pay attention to the details when ordering, of course - and we are happy to give advice. However, much has to be done still and the Autogefuehl community is massively helping in boosting the positive change! Help to raise awareness on this subject. Thanks!

@@autogefuehl Maybe have a personalized message rather than copypasting. It kinda feels like you don't really care about the comments, but I hope that's not the case. If i picked leather seats, I'd pick it because it's nice. I think that's how most people think that have experienced fake leather as well. I'm driving a combustion engine around already that has had massive emissions during it's production, so I'm already environmentally crushing it. It's like flying to thailand and back and then not having a plastic straw at McDonald's because you are such an "environmentalist". I wouldn't like cows to be killed because of leather either, but as long as they are eaten, we might as well use the skin too as not to be wasteful (in that order). I'd rather fix the animal welfare issues than just throwing away the baby with the bathwater. I'm sorry, I won't be reading the resources you copy pasted because they are covered with appeal to emotions and a clear agenda. It sounds like propaganda and it doesn't, in my opinion, help your cause. Have a human having a discussion instead. That's my opinion.

We get 8000 comments per day and I personally spend many many hours per day. There not much more I can do. As for this topic, it is very helpful to get the extensive overview first and a lot of guys really found this information very helpful. So telling me "I dont care about the comments" while I spent so much time without gaining anything from it feels like a clear offense. If you get beaten down on the street for robbery, would you care if it was for your purse or for your smartphone? So you see that it doesnt matter for what you kill in the first place, the animal farming industry uses the body parts. Or would a vegan go to the butcher and say "please only give me the meat of the cows that were slaughtered for leather first, so I can eat them without bad conscience?" And of course, I do have a clear agenda. The agenda is called compassion and information. My agenda is that customers deserve to know what shit is being done in their name.

@@autogefuehl I dont understand your butcher comparison, I'm sorry. If meat was dependant on leather, let's say, then ban leather production and meat goes away also. Obviously. So in the real life we live in, ban all meat production. Tadah! No more leather products either (if it was just a byproduct). You would just have to ban meat production first and that... That might not happen anytime soon. Now, there is one argument I think is a good one: There might not be a way to make sure a manufacturer has not used sweatshops or questionable ethics when treating animals. If that is the case and it is found that major manufacturers use questionable and cruel sources then yes; avoid leather products, make noise and boycott such companies. I am not aware of any scandals, though I haven't sought for them either.

I agree that slaughtering animals should not be allowed. We dont slaughter our dogs and cats, so why would we do that with cows and pigs? If you wanna know where the car leather is coming from, you ll find the videos in the long answer. It's not pretty.

No reason go choose this over a 911 or S Class Cabrio.

I know you wrote this a whole back, but this is more practical than a 911 and a lot cheaper fully loaded than the base model. The S class cabrio has now been discontinued but in general I find Merc interiors tacky. This is refined and classy. I’m considering either this or am M4 convertible. 🤷🏼‍♀️

@@rambo116 I’ve decide to get both a Z4 and an X7. My concern for the 8 series is the dated interior. Correct me if I’m wrong but It still runs off I drive 7 I think. The Z4 has the same issue which leads me to believe It’ll be disconnected soon. It was just refreshed this year I think. My thoughts are if I’m spending 125k plus on a new car, it should come with BMWs latest and greatest tech. The Z4 is cheap so I’m willing to overlook that. I realized that I can’t get everything I want in one car, so it’s best to spend a bit more to get two. I also just bought a 2024 GTI manual with the plaid interior just for fun. It’s the last VW manual so it was a total nostalgia purchase. I drove a Vw manual in college and my dad had one until he graduated to a bmw. Just thoughts.🤷🏼‍♀️

Combustion engines are past. I rather like to hear the wooooosh of a speeding electric super car than the revving tractor sound of an old school petrol engine.

This car is so dull and boring. The body is bulky which makes the wheels look small. The front in profile looks smushed and swept back compared to the angular, protruding front end of the concept, the rear is a wreck with too many lines that dont come together and the interior is dull and lackluster. BMW needs Lexus help with bringing concept designs to life the way they did the LC500- that car is still benchmark for desing. If this looked more like the concept it would be a winner.

@Gas Pedal Subscribe You are insane because you blindly believe BMWs marketing drivel. This is based on the 5 series and in the same category as the E cabriolet in every way. The S cabriolet is based on the S class, has much more space, is focused more on comfort than sport and has a more luxurious interior. It's in a different category in every way.
