In Episode 4 of our BMW 2002 build, we take an AWD BMW 6 speed manual transmission out of a BMW 335i and convert it to be RWD! Once the GS6-53BZ transmission is converted, you have a bulletproof RWD 6 speed manual transmission that can be used in many high horsepower applications like n54, n55, 2jz-gte, b58, and more. Later in this video, After “x-drive deleting” the GS6-53BZ, we get it mounted to the N54 engine we salvaged from the 2009 E93 we bought with 57k miles.
The car we’re working on is a 1972 BMW 2002 (Like the E10 Tii, not an E46). It is very lightweight and will have a high power to weight ration when we’re done. Be sure to subscribe, as this build series will go through the build in detail. We will be doing a full modern suspension and roll cage to keep this vehicle legal, safe, and competitive in racing events from drifting to drag racing! We will also have DIY build details to allow the car to be a sensible street car and be a capable road race chassis.
One of the coolest things we get in this swap is modern BMW direct fuel injection. This system allows fuel to be injected into the cylinders at any time (not just while air is entering through an open intake valve). This principle allows tuning (management of combustion temperature and fuel stoichiometry) throughout the entire compression and power stroke. The result is a more tuner-friendly engine environment and ultimately more power per liter.
Common struggles of AWD to RWD conversions include things like driveshaft lengths, sensor problems, and rattles and leaks. The process we used solves most of these issues.
