Dr. Dean I have a question. What scan tool do you prefer to use on these BMW’s man? I’m looking at doing this stuff on cars that I’m going to be buying and selling and I was just wondering what scan tool that you would use as well as what software please man. not my car but thats my engine bay! on another topic, is a stuck oil dipstick a common issue on these engines? every damn time I check it it takes gorilla strength and sometimes a bashed elbow to remove, and only after a drive. I know it's not some kind of strange PCV negative pressure issue because I've tried taking off the fill cap beforehand. I don't wanna spend 20 bucks on a new one if there's some way to stop this from happening.

Dean, at what mileage should this rebuilding of the vanos seals take place/ My E46 currently has 62,000 one owner miles. Love your videos!

It should take place at around 100k mark but they may be worn before hand you can tell if your car is slow at pulling up hills and on take off you feel no torque

At what mileage you have to replace timing chains, timing guides and tensioners on these engines ?

timing chain and tensioners do NOT fail on this engine

Hey brother I think putting in a radiator is harder than renewing the vanos seals. I was always scared of doing that, but now I think I'm going to try that since I'm good with the cooling system!

Correct me if I am wrong, I believe Bosch plugs IS/ARE what BMW, atleast usually uses, from the factory. It is why I recognized the Bosch Platinum 4's you were showing on the N series engine. Also, it was the Bosch Platinum 2, not 4 that I had used on my prior owned e30. If I keep my e46 (m52tu), I will probably use the Platinum 4.

That is correct BUT N52 was never used until later after bmw realised the ONE Electrode was the cause of many people’s rough idle issues and switched back to the 4 electrodes NOT letting people know unless you went into bmw dealer with issues

Why didn't you open and replace interior of vanos and only washers ?

Only do this if the system is rattling AND you have access to an impact gun. Rattling does not affect the VANOS operation; only the seals do so.

I've got a 325i with 85,000 on the clock, but it's 21 years old - reckon this is worth doing? The engine is struggling when I try to hold low revs for manouvres, and my fuel economy is around 10% worse than it should be...

I took it apart and put it all back together, but now my car wont start. Nothing happens. Power comes on but car won't start, starter wont even try to go. My dash says CODl ------. Cant read it cuz my pixels are going out. I assume it is trying to tell me a code number. I plugged in my OBD2 reader and its the same codes i always had for years, nothing new. So i have a new code i cant find. What happened?

@@BMWDoctor After trying to figure out the problem and looking thru the manual i realized it must only be saying CODING. The manual says you can set a code on the cluster, so the engine wont start until the code is entered. I think somehow my car set itself a code. One of the many times i put the key in and turned it so power would come on, it snapped out of it all by itself. Now it starts up. I think my dme relay is going out tho....

Doc i really need your suggestion.. I got error "vanos exhaust camshaft end position not reached, outside adaptation value" i use bmw scanner to pull that error.. I have done vanos rebuild and timing but when i floor my car more than 3000 rpm on load by driving it that error come back.. Im in got bad oiling issue in my ex vanos? Because at the first time i dissamble my vanos got just little bit of oil in there then i check the solenoid i found that my oil gate is stuck so i try to pull it and make it free to move again.. Thanks in advance.

I have a 2005 325i and under normal driving conditions it is showing about 13L for fuel consumption which to me seems high, would the vanos have an effect on this? What are other causes that would make my fuel consumption be so high? This is not spirited driving. Thanks in advance for your response.

I have recently got myself a 325CI on 112K and get the odd bit of oil burn smell when hot and have a small leak coming from valve cover, I have got the gasket set, my question is do you need to replace the bolts for the valve cover and do you use both the new rubber gasket and gasket seal? and do you have a link to the vanos rebuild kit. great video by the way, I'll be watching a few more times before I attempt and hopefully do the vanos seals whilst I'm there, Thanks :)

N52 engine doesn’t need this mate they have vanos adjusters which is ALOT easier to replace if anything happens but they don’t suffer with this problem just the solenoids providing they work properly all the time your N52 will run perfect all the time
