Nice clean M5 with a proper gearbox. Keep it clean on the outside and a beast under the hood. Although I prefer the E39 myself, this is a really nice ride. Good choice.

I was on the highway cruising when one of these was racing some dodge charger srt.The sound at acceleration was deafening,if you closed your eyes you could swear you were right next to an F1 car. I don't think there is any 4 door car right now that you would rather have even including the e63, S6,hellcat,Panamera. I would buy, you only live once.

My brother recently bought one with the manual. I had a chance to drive it briefly the other day and it's remarkably civilized low down. I expected the ride to be much harsher than it is - stock sport mode was still very comfortable and the throttle isn't touchy at city speeds. The gearing is pretty tall, and you're right - it's matched well for the kind of car it is. I haven't wrung it out as it's scary fast when you put your foot in it, but that's no surprise. The steering is lovely - lots of feel and direct. The thing I was shocked at was how comfortable and easy it was to manage at low speed. It's really two cars in one.

Love the E60 M5. I can listen to V10 noises forever.

I just love the body style of these BMW 5 series cars from around 2005 and a couple of years forward. Definitely my pick for the best looking sedan from around that time.

The regular e60 (528i-550i) came out in 2004 but the e60 m5 didn't come out until 2006

Oh man you guys who hate on this car have no clue, The E60 is the best selling 5 series due to the fact that it had style, technology and luxury ahead of it's time. If anything this design was revolutionary other than evolutionary like the previous models. I'm pretty sure not many people can guess this car is as old as it seems.

I have a 08 and its stock. I have the SMG and I like it a lot. You just have to learn to drive it. I have the active seats and every other option for that year. I think the active seats are steering angle related. Mine burns a quart about every 2500 miles and has 63K miles. Maint is not cheap but my car is paid for so I just set funds aside for maint. It's a great car, engine is even better. Only thing I did was update the NAV and that was a great upgrade. Really made for wide open spaces. I am from Los Angeles but now live in VA. It would much more fun out west except back here you get 93 octane fuel. No SMG issues. I am leaving it stock because its just fine the way it is. From 7700 to redline is where it rocks. I do have an extended powertrain warranty. The turbo cars will never be as iconic as the normally aspirated and never sound as good, no speaker dubbing with these.

Review another E39 M5, Matt. We would all love to see it!

Had a friend who had the SMG gearbox. I believe it was a $7-8k repair when it went out at 50k miles.

Yeah! I would have offered you mine if I were a little closer. Good to see the E60 getting some love. And my SMG has been problem free BTW, 104k miles now. I'm sure now that I said that it will break tomorrow.

One of my friends bought a fully loaded (extended leather, active bolsters, etc) manual V10 M5, low mileage, with full Carmax warranty in the high 30s. It's a mind-blowing amount of car for the price, with insane performance, but no harder to drive than a 3 series.

I have a 2007 M6 with RPI intake kit and GT exhaust. Sounds so damn good, I might get the header just to complete it all.

The E60 sounds amazing but nothing beats the look inside and outside of the E39

I Work for an extended warranty company. BMW V10's are super common for having leaking valve seals causing excessive oil consumption. Almost all V10, 7 series and 5 series have this issue. BMW considers 2.5qts per 1000 miles on M series "normal"

I have a 540i with a V8 and a 6-speed manual with more than 170,000 miles. Engine still pulls scary hard. That E60 M5 must feel like a rocket.

A couple months ago, wheeler dealers showed how you can turn an SMG into a manual. Pretty sweet and not as difficult or expensive as you would think.

Usually the One Takes are 10-12 minutes length, but this one was over 17 minutes, and I understand why :-) This is just an amazing car!!

this has been my dream car for the longest now and only reason I haven't gotten it yet was because I was honestly not ready to face the repair costs lol. if anyone owns an e60 M5 or has experience with one, can you please let me know if they're somewhat reliable when maintained? or is my dream car just a huge money pit that I should avoid?

There is actually a G-Power Twinsupercharger Setup with 1000hp now.

I drove one of these with the smg. That transmission was horrible. It was at a dealership. The detail guy rode with me. And he was like there has got to be a way to adjust it. We couldn't find a way. The power was great so I bet with the manual transmission this thing is superb.

I have the Meisterscraft GTHaus system on my 2015 SRT jeep. It is ridiculous when the valves are open. I ran into one of these m5's with the same system and I was blown away. I thought my truck was loud. You can listen to a quick 0-60 scoot in my videos but that v10 was beyond epic. Actually sounded better than an Aventador I had blow by me. The e60 with the gt haus system is pure music.

Great video Matt. Honest review of the E60 M5. I just got rid of my 2008 M5 (SMG), it was giving DSC error messages and would only drive in limp mode. The car was great when it was working properly. For the years I owned her she worked well up until the last few months. I now have an F10 M5 which is a totally different beast. I love it. Keep up the good work.

So how is it that every stroker kit no matter how small i.e. 5.5 v10 sounds no longer like a v10 but then suddenly Troy Jeuper comes along and that's all he does is rebuild engines and make stroker v10's and they retain that glorious v10 f1 sound? What a motor! For me a perfect car would be the T.J. Stroker 6.0 v10 with forged everything, ported heads, cam, headers, exhaust, 6 speed built, carbon fiber: roof, trunk, hood, custom cf wheels and a fine set adjustable coil-overs as well as a custom wide body...oh and of course...a roots style blower..it's not overkill...its perfection..havent seen one yet. Only on an e90 m3 (low boost 2-3 bar). Now thats what i am talking about right there! Everything together your getting pretty close to $80k but hey.....its the perfect car...keep that hoe for a lifetime. The original BMW M5 E60 came out in 2006. Not in 2004

While they are never quite the best manuals, at least BMW has historically put them in quite a few desirable cars. Good video.

Clean looking E60. I just bought a 2006 interlagos blue E60 not too long ago. I was lucky in finding it with only 46k miles on her. Has the SMG tranny, but with the latest software upgrade, it helps reduce the shift lag. Enjoy driving and building up yours!

This drivetrain in an e46 or an e36 makes for an absolute monster on both the street and at the track. There's a video around here with an e36 m3 V10 track car and the way that car hauls ass is stunning. It's even better because the guy doesn't go at it right from the start though it seems like he does and when he actually does, god daaamn!

Love it! Matt, if you want to drive ACH with a modded example, with a 3.91, SSK, yada, yada, yada, I'm local. I've been tracking and daily driving my 6MT s85 e60 m5 for the past 100,000+. E60 M5 Manual: It's a classic, like a mechanical Swiss watch. Outdated by technology, but not obsolete like an iPhone from 2005!

I'm all about supporting you and your great (free!) work but 24$USD for a t-shirt? they probably cost 4-5$ per tee to be made.

So glad you did a M5 manual. Like the exhaust on them but I also the stock muffler sound. Looks good. After my TRD supercharger had front snout issues on my Tundra I made my mind up keeping my Trailblazer SS N/A and 91 mr2 N/A. Superchargers & turbos are cool but N/A is just less problems. Final drive was a good topic. I changed out my 5th gear in my mr2 transmission from a .820 to the camrys .731. That brought my top speed from 125 to 145 mph. Trailblazer has a 4.10 but governed at 130 factory. Transmission ratios are good for 202mph. Keeping that motor stock I might just change the rear end to match somewhere in the 160mph range.

Guy has no knowledge on his own car. Definitely first came out in 06. 04 for the e60 body style.

If that's the original clutch, it speaks volumes for the build quality of that drivetrain.

He needs to do exhaust ASAP - the most beautiful thing about the E60 M5. I just removed the mufflers on mine and it was literally the best money I've ever spent. Only $100 in labor and $150 in tips. Can't stop driving it! There's an exhaust video of it on my channel.
