*** New Grey box with OEM Microphone NOW AVAILABLE. See link below.
Here we go, finally, after a long delay I've finished a new video!
This time I'm installing the MMI box from Mr12volt, to give you Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.
So the main difference between this and the other style of MMI is that the audio is delivered via the MOST fibre optic network as opposed to the AUX 3.5mm socket in the centre console. This method delivers a digital signal instead of the anologue that the other types of boxes do. The integration is far smoother and looks more OEM.
The standard box can be bought from this (affiliate) link... ** They've stopped making the standard box (as shown in this video) now, so it's the DSP one only, fits the same!
** And the NEW (Grey) box with the OEM Microphone attachment (affiliate) link...
www.mr12volt.c...
Please note this is a promoted video, but I am being honest within the video and have not just said nice things about it, I really do like it and have been running mine for the last couple of months now.
The manufacturer states that it requires that either the CD Changer is already installed, in which case you'll loose this facility as it'll need disconnecting, or that you've had CDC Prep from the factory. But this option can be coded into the car anyway so shouldn't present a problem, so I show how the coding should be done in this case.
If you just need the coding section (not normally required) then jump to 26:11
As always thank you for watching. And if you purchase through either of the links this will support the channel.

Note: for the new gray box (using the mic splitter) it seems the iDrive connection is no longer needed... in their RU-vid video showing the install on an e91 someone asked "So the new model also doesn’t need separate wiring for the iDrive controller?" and Mr12Volt's answer was "it all connected to the Quadlock now as shown in video. no more idrive controller"... so I am assuming if you get the new box you can skip first steps regarding removal of the gearbox shifter cover removal? Anyone who can confirm this for the e89 (to avoid unnecessary panel removal)... if so may want to update the comments (I can imagine updating the video would be way too much effort, and thank you for having this, far better than what Mr12Volt provides!)
@BMWZ4Mods
@BMWZ4Mods 3 месяца назад
You are correct. The new boxes now connect via the Quadlock. BUT, in removing the centre console panel you avoid the possibility of scratching it, and removing the gear knob also helps removal of the headunit. I hope to make a new video when the opertunity arises 👍

Hi Dave, fantastic write-up and instructions. I have just bought an e89 Z4 and had previous experience with MMI boxes. My question is, I think you have used other MMI boxes previously, assuming you much prefer the Mr12volt boxes over the other aliexpress versions, even at double the price. Any specific reasons? Software, interface etc?
@BMWZ4Mods
@BMWZ4Mods Месяц назад
Glad you like the video. My preference for the Mr12volt over the other MMI's is for a few reasons. Digital connectivity, ie; the fact that it is the only box that sends a digital signal out via the fibre optic MOST network. All of the other boxes use the AUX analogue socket, and this suffers from poorer audio quality and the potential of degraded connection due to Verdigris on the socket connectors. General quality and service level, although my own original Aliexpress MMI box was perfectly fine, I've had bad reports back, even about the seller I bought mine from (hence why I removed my link from my other video), for failing boxes and bad aftersales service (primarily due to the sellers just being Drop-Shippers and not proper suppliers). But this has then a knock-on effect to the customer. I've found the quality of the Mr12volt boxes and the level of service to be very good indeed. Integration, The general feel, look and all round experience is far superior with the Mr12volt box. The on-screen integration just looks like it's supposed to be there. Now to be fair I do own an older box (2 generations back), but since installing mine there have been improvements and upgrades with the newer boxes. I've installed quite a few of these into other owners Z4's now and have found the newer boxes to be just as good etc. I hope that answers your question? Dave
@colsaffer
@colsaffer 21 день назад
Yes, thanks Dave. I have just ordered the MMI box from Mr12 Volt today. Having ordered an andriod screen (for a different car) through AliExpress and experienced first hand the lack of quality and support from the resellers, I was very hesitant in reordering through that channel. Also, couldn't find one where you do not have to use the physical aux input so this speaks a lot for Mr12Volt. Hopefully will arrive in time for me to install this weekend. Thank you!

Thanks a lot for this. I think I've taken out all the screws for the glove box but it doesn't come out. I've taken then screws inside the box, the one being the side trim (towards the door), as well as dropped the panel with the 3 Philips and also removed the two hidden Torx. Any ideas of what to try? It seems loose towards the door and stuck towards the driver section

Do you have a passenger knee airbag? If you do, then this can prevent removing the glovebox. I'm told it's a couple of 10mm nuts. Other than that, if you've removed all of the upper internal screws, the internal (centre console) side screw/s and the external side screw. Plus, the 3 lower panel screws and the one hidden above it, all you'd have left is the hidden screws on the centre console side.

@@BMWZ4Mods Many thanks. I don't have the passenger knee airbag as far as I know. I have a 2009 23i and not sure it was an option, but I will check. I left the screws with a white plastic bracket on that you crossed out in the video, and I think there's still one black at the top. Otherwise all removed, but I'll double check again. Which one are the hidden on the centre console side?

Hi I hope somebody can help & point me in right direction. I have purchased a BMW with a P2000 Mr 12 volt installed which works fine except for issues below & I need to get a technician to check it out. However I need info to best advise technician what he needs to check. 1) Handsfree buttons on steering wheel inoperative. 2) Car radio does not work if Apple Carplay is on --- normally car radios will work in background with CarPlay . Connection of MR 12 Volt is to CD Player. 3) There is no bluetooth car connection to the car -- it will not link with any phone even with Mr 12 Volt not active - you can only get a bluetooth connection to Mr 12Volt. Normally you can usually use car blue tooth for calls instead of CarPlay but when you select BT in car menu it just whirs & finds nothing. 4) Telephone audio in car is fine but recipient of telephone call gets badly distorted almost inaudible voice. Any info on these questions woulkd be greatly appreciated as it looks like the installer of the unit was not carried out correctly. much appreciated any replies
@BMWZ4Mods
@BMWZ4Mods 15 дней назад
@johnhudston3794 1) When you say the steering wheel hands free button is inoperative, I'm assuming you mean for CarPlay? 2) So if you swap from Mr12volt to the cars radio, presumably using the controller button on the centre console, what do you get on the screen? 3) Delete the Bluetooth and WiFi connections for Mr12volt on the Mr12volt box and your phone, then try to connect to the cars Bluetooth. 4) This depends on which box it is, Black box, Blue box or Grey box. The black box was for an aftermarket mic, as per my video although I did make up a Y loom to use the OEM mic. They have changed this with the Blue and Grey boxes to have an OEM option. You may want to check whether you box requires an update, as this may help.

Thanks for a great video - I am about to order this but have a couple of questions... (E89 2009) I noticed you ended up putting in directly behind the dash in the middle - does that mean I don't have to remove the glove box? I am confused as to if I need to do any coding at all? I don't know the first thing about it, or where to even start - so that is a concern. Thanks again.
@BMWZ4Mods
@BMWZ4Mods Месяц назад
@FPVAustralia glad you liked the video 👍 Positioning..... so it's entirely down to your preference as to where you locate the box (and the length of the wires!). The options are; on top of the glovebox, behind the air-con controls, above the footwell kick plates. Or as I've just moved mine to, inside the glovebox! This option does mean that you have to drill a suitable hole in the roof of the glovebox for the cables, but mine already has extra holes anyway, so no issue to me. This does allow you the best access for box updates as you won't need to remove any trim. But box updates aren't really all that common or required, I've done two in the entire time I've had mine, and both had no noticeable effect. As for coding, due to the way that the current boxes are now connected, I recommend that any coding is done before you install the box. If you've not currently got CDC as an option then you'll need to code 672 to the cars VO before you start as well (this option can be checked with an online VO checking site). Hope that helps 👍

I do not have the CDC or prep... however, when it comes to coding, I use the Protools app and have made the mod for the CCMM_CHANGER3=mp3_cdc. I do not want to need to turn off voice control. As the new box comes with the OE mic splitter, then I'd recommend using that. Alas mine is the old box where I made my own up, it works on the most part for talking to Google (would be the same for Siri) but not good enough for phone calls (so I use the OE bluetooth for that). I found your video very helpful. I have an E89 from 2009. It allows bluetooth phone calls but not bluetooth music. I asked my local dealer about software updates and they said there is no bluetooth update for this particular head unit though later models support bluetooth music. I notice everyone else seems to have an "Office" option on their main CIC menu which I don't have and I have no idea what that is for? I do have satnav (now with 2021 map data) , DVD playback, a USB socket in the glovebox and an auxilary input in the armrest. Do you think this MMI box would be compatible with my car?

Yes, it'll be compatible, but may still require some minor coding depending on the factory spec list. If you put your VIN into a website like bimmer.work/ And you want to be seeing code 672. If yes then you're going to go, if not then it needs some coding.

@@BMWZ4Mods Yes, I am in the UK. How is coding done? Would I need to bring my car to you for an update or would the car get the update automatically via the phone network? I'm sorry to keep asking questions but I am a little confused about the 2 types of MMI box available. As far as I understand, both MMI box types locate the box in the glove box and allow the phone to sit inside the armrest, optionally powered by USB. A standard box seems to be one that uses the car auxiliary socket to transmit audio through the head unit but still utilises the microphone built into the steering column for Apple/Google voice commands? The option you show here is a a box that sends audio through the head unit digitally (for superior sound quality by pretending to be a CD changer) but that requires an additional external microphone to use Apple/Google voice commands. Is this correct? Are there any other differences that I've missed?

Stellar guide on how it’s done. Took me a full 6 hours trying to get panels loose and removing the glove box had me resorting to power tools for the big M4 screws! Decided to leave the box loose inside the glove box instead of hiding it, which turned out to be a good idea as one day it had frozen up completely and needed a full disconnect to get it back running again. Is there another way to power cycle the box without pulling the plug? No inputs were responsive at all as far as I could tell. Another question I have- my E89 is equipped with the BMW professional soundsystem (I think). I can hear sound from all the panels front and back indicating a 13-speaker setup is in place, none of the mesh panels are just a facade. The ‘tone’ options menu also has an equaliser menu where I can tweak up and down maybe 12-15 frequency bands. The Mr12Volt also has DSP tuning. This means I have 2 possible places to tweak the sound to my liking. I had originally used the BMW DSP and tweaked the bass heavier and that was great, but I want to get the most out of this setup. So I tried using the Mr12Volt DSP instead, leaving the BMW one ‘flat’ and pushing up the 5 ‘bass’ bars on the Mr12Volt box. For added detail, left to right I added +12, +9, +7, +5, +3. The idea being the lowest low would thump most with it tailing to a little more relaxed upper bass. The result? Utter crap. The signal was distorted all over the place. Interestingly, it was distorting at a much lower volume than when using the BMW DSP alone (never, only if volume max and bass + BMW DSP bass bars were maxed out). Is the problem the Mr12Volt passing too big a signal to the BMW headunit when I set its 5 bass bars higher? Or is the signal coming through clean from the Mr12Volt but being heavily suppressed by the ‘flat’ BMW DSP? Could the best result come from having a 50/50 (or 40/60, 60/40) setup where both Mr12Volt and BMW DSP’s are set to both have an increased bass output? Apologies for writing an entire book here, any input/experience on this would be fantastic! Cheers!

If your box freezes for any reason, just press and hold down the iDrive controller, until the MMI box switches off. Then release the controller and the box will reboot. Hopefully that’ll sort the issue. Output volume from the Mr12volt box…. There is a Volume setting in the box settings page, shown on my video at 18:19. Don’t have this setting too high, it makes a huge difference just setting it a little lower. As for the Mr12volt built-in DSP, this was bought about because some owners complained that it sounded quite “flat”, so this was produced to combat that issue. Now if you’ve got the top system then you have the iDrive DSP. Personally, I’d do one or the other, and probably start with the iDrive settings, if OK then leave it at that, if not then flatten them out and start with the Mr12volt DSP settings and see where you go from there. As I don’t have either of the amplified systems I find mine sounds perfectly fine without any additional settings, but then I have the earlier Mr12volt box anyway, so only have Bass and Trebble on the headunit. But I’d seriously look at the MMI box Volume setting first, and do not have it set all the way up full.
@matthewleith183
@matthewleith183 Год назад
@@BMWZ4Mods Brilliant I’ll try that next time the box freezes (infrequently enough, thankfully!) that’s a good thought- I have the volume set at 30 out of 32, I will drop it down and see if I can get a better result that way. Not home for a week so it’ll be next week by the time I come back with an update! Saying you have an early box, do you mean with respect to the fact there’s the newer grey box out for use in the E89? I bought my Mr12Volt box about 2 months ago, it’s the blue colour box not the newer grey one. It has more than just bass and treble dials though, 15 DSP bars. I guess that’s the same as the new grey one, the grey one just supports OEM mic use (which would’ve been handy to have but it’s not the biggest issue!) Cheers for the knowledge!

@matthewleith183 my box is the black one, with no DSP settings at all. Although I ordered and received it one week before they released the blue box version, so I missed out on the DSP. From the factory mine had CDC Prep, which is VO Code 694 (CDC is VO Code 672), it'll work with both codes. So you need to check your VO to see what, if any, you currently have. Now, if it's 694, then follow the coding in the video for the CDMM setting. If it's 672, then the box should do the coding automatically. But if you have neither, then you'll need to code it in, which would be 672, to the VO. I hope that makes sense.

@@BMWZ4Mods Hi, I just wanted to let you I installed it last week- end. I didn't have a VO code 672 so I coded it, then I modified the CIC ECU like you did in your video. One thing to note, even tho I don't have CDC prep, I did have a fiber cable going to my CIC in that case we should use the same first method you shown (inside the car), the second one (in the workshop) seems like it's only if you don't have any fiber running to your CIC unit. I found very conflicting info on that from the internet. So dropping a comment for other people. Also I was kinda disappointed on the sound quality, discs are still miles ahead and I cannot tell the difference between aux and this most integration tbh, the sound is a lot more muffled than the radio and discs

@karimlamouri7787 there shouldn't be any muffled sound from the box. It should be crystal clear. Check your audio out going settings on the mmi (mmi settings screen not the phone settings screen). Don't have the audio output on max, as thus will distort.

Great video, I am looking to do the same in my 2011 E89 35i. @BMWZ4Mods, can you please confirm @karimlamouri7787 comment: "I did have a fiber cable going to my CIC in that case we should use the same first method you shown (inside the car), the second one (in the workshop) seems like it's only if you don't have any fiber running to your CIC unit." Dave, In the video you mention "if you don't currently have a CD Changer" but the text on the video states "if you don't currently have a fibre optic cable". Just confirming so I know what to do because I don't have a CD Changer, but I most likely have the fiber optic cable as I have HiFi System Professional DSP. I also don't have 694 or 672 in VO, so I'll have to code 672 in. Also, which cable to use with NCSExpert? Thanks.

As for the fibre optic cable.... Yes, as stated in the vudeo, if you have one, then add the Y loop. If not, then the single two-way run will have to be used. Yes, you are going to have to code 672. Do this to the VO, then FA_WRITE to the CAS & NFRM and the SG_CODEREIN to CIC. As for a cable, then you need a K+D Can cable, there are many on the market, just don't go too cheap.

Hi Dave, I am not that familiar with NCS Expert, would you be able to outline the steps to add 672 to VO, as well as FA_WRITE to CAS and NFRM? Some forums I’ve read says change 2URAD module as well, so a bit confused. Is FRM update also needed? Also, can the coding be done before installing the MMI box or after? Thanks again, your help is greatly appreciated.

@gkcs197 Take a look at this video and jump to 40 minutes 16 seconds... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wYQgNDj4Fac.htmlsi=Y_TI-yGl8odaWdUT It describes the full coding process. Instead of the numbers $609 and $6VA, insert $672. Yes, the coding can all be done prior to the physical mmi installation . Hope that helps, Dave

Hi Dave, Thank you once again for making it easier for us. Sorry another question, in the other video that you suggested, at 40:55, you mention KOMBI. Is that the same module required for coding 672 as well? Do you know what is KOMBI? Thanks.

@@gkcs197 You don't need to use KOMBI (that's the speedo cluster by the way), you can use CIC or even CAS, it's just a module that has the full VO to it.
