Choosing a bike is choosing the bike that put the biggest smile in your face, the one you like to look and wish to ride. This bike put a smile in my face evertime i jump on it. I love owning this bike, i love how it looks and hiw it rides and people take picture of it. When i ride it i smile as you were smiling during this review. This tells everthing.

Exactly. People go on a spec sheet, but bikes have been too good since the 70s or 80s. Ride what you love. There are barely any dogs out there, just different flavors.

I fully agree with this comment. I own a 2023 KTM 890 Adventure (S) and now also own the F900 GS Enduro. At first I was unsure of which bike would stick around, but the GS makes me way more excited to ride both on and off-road. Is the 890 way easier to ride and more forgiving? Yes. ..but that's not what matters. At the end of the day, 890 doesn't make me feel the same way the GS does, which is why I'm keeping the GS.

If I had 15-20k to buy an ADV, i would buy a Tuareg and spend the 2-7k that I have left on a nice holiday with my wife ;) If the Tuareg didn't exist, my next choices would be: 900GS over Tiger 900 Rally over 890 Adventure

As a 650 owner, V-Strom 1050DE. Tried it last weekend, it's so compliant and feels so good to ride that i am literally in love. Engine is 10/10, suspensions are super good, quickshifter is very fast with very low effort to change gears. The way it rides is absolutely fantastic, it enter corners without a single push, it stays in middle curve like a train and it exits them like a jet. I feel like it's so rewarding to ride that i wouldn't want anything changed. Also, the 800DE has a very good pull and a more relaxed chassis, good for offroad. Suzukis as always puts a big smile on my face.

For my riding interests, Moto Guzzi Stelvio or Triumph Tiger 900 GT Pro. I'm in my 60's and my offroad riding is basically gravel roads or any terrain where the chance of the bike laying on its side is mighty slim.

I was able to choose between any of the top level middleweights. After about 2 months of watching endless RU-vid videos I picked the Ducati Desert X, I have just over 1000km's (600mls) of total bliss, no regrets yet !

I’m currently waiting delivery of a 2024 standard Africa Twin manual. For me, it’s the reliability, seemingly lower cost of ownership/maintenance that mostly contributed to the decision.

HONDA Africa Twin 2024 Standard. I have the 2021 and cannot be happier. I ride 90% off-road and I've put the AT through a lot of rough terrain. For me, the bike is about the right height in the low seat configuration. Maintenance schedule is very good. Gas mileage is fantastic for the size of the engine. Power is there (off-road) when you kill all the computer assists. It comes with 21" and 18" wheels which are perfect for what I do. The new one has better suspension and the rims are tubeless, those are the only two features missing on mine. Great ADV bike if you do off-road riding. Zero issues after 10K miles.

I was a GS fan. I went to test drive the Triumph 1200 Rally Pro after I saw your review. I loved it and bought one last year. I do ride it to my work and do solo offroad short trips on days off. Really like your reviews on ADV. Especially the drop test. No one ever pays any attention to it and I believe it is super important. Love from Townsville.

The drone shots are pretty great. I appreciate you adding that in. If I had to buy an adventure bike in the 15-20k range, I'd have the 900 GS. It's a BMW... And I want a BMW. I think that matters. Even if it's not the absolute best, it's competitive enough in the segment to let me make an emotional decision without regret.

It's a Chinese loncin bike with the headlight of the Indian tvs 310... It's only BMW in the badge.. What an expensive joke and you're willing to pay over 15k for this... A real BMW in this category is long gone and that would be the old R850GS with the oil cooled boxer engine, drive shaft and truly made in Germany...
@papertiger795
@papertiger795 23 дня назад
@@nickzourb190 I'll be sure to let BMW know that what the customer truly demands is a bike using decades old technology for $20-25k. None of this globalized economy crap, a bike made in Germany by Germans using German materials. I'm sure that'll go over well... They'll sell bucket loads.

I've got a Moto Guzzi V85 TT Adventure. Mostly on-road and some two track. It's decent enough for plugging along dirt roads, and great on the highway. The 23L tank gives me lots of range. Shaft drive and cruise control are nice. The valves are easy to access, and air cooled means less to go wrong. The air filter is under the under-seat tray, and isn't that bad to access. I love this thing. If I were to do any sort of serious off-roading, it would be something much smaller and lighter, 350 EXC or some such.

A thoroughly comprehensive report and I always enjoy the hard earned experience you garnish it with. I have the Africa Twin, the first of the throttle by wire and just had a major service at 80,000km and still the valves settings were the same the day it came off the production line. I've had minor problems like needing to replace front fork seals. I've had an Acropovic exhuast from day one and can't see me selling the AT on the horizon just yet. Love it.

I have just bought a mid sized ADV to replace my Honda CRF300 and Triumph Scrambler 1200XE as I'm riding off road 50% of the time here in the UK now and the Triumph was to expensive and nice to take off road although it's more than capable but I'm not still very much a newbie riding off road. I had three mid sized ADV's in mind on my short list, Aprilia Tuareg 660, BMW F900 GS Enduro spec and the new YamahaTenere Extreme. Just for context I'm 6' 2" and around 17st so not the smallest bloke. The 660 was way to small although a great bike and should be test ridden if you are going off road, the F900 GS is very nice and rides well but once I specified with the off road extras I need it was over £16k here in the UK so my money has gone on the Yamaha Tenere Extreme which I should have in June. The other element that put me off the F900 GS is the engine is a Chinese supplied and built engine which is not acceptable at that top price point.

The long term reliability and service costs to me are very important especially with something designed to go off-road. The last thing I want is to be in the middle of nowhere with a snapped camshaft(ktm) and why I avoid what might be great bikes to ride but bad and expensive to own and maintain. It's hard to judge on an almost completely new bike but BMW's do seem to have a good reputation compared to some of the competition. That air cleaner is so well thought out and implemented, other companies could definitely learn from this

Dealer service and cost are very important to me, however I am on my second KTM and no regrets at all, even if it fails one day. All these years of great memories riding it are worth it. By all means I don’t want it to leave me stranded, nobody does, but I also don’t want to waste my life on boring bikes. And by the way, before my first KTM - a 1090R - I had a F800GS, and that one gave me more issues, well the 1090R ownership was actually flawless, not a single issue ever.

Excellent review on the F 900 GS Ian! Your cinematography and presentation skills have taken a big step up over the past while with an end result of stunning visual effects and a thorough professional presentation. One can tell you are enjoying your full time gig. 🙂 I am a returning rider and have spent the last year honing my off road skills on a Honda CRF 300L with an eye towards more BMW training and an eventual move towards a twin cylinder adventure bike. Your reviews are having a positive influence on narrowing my choices. Thank You! I have a feeling I will end up with a T7 with the main contenders a close second Africa Twin Base, F 900 GS and and the Transalp a distant 4th. I find the 300L so fun off road I may just keep it and tweak ergonomics and suspension over time while making a budget friendly move on the ADV bike. Your objective reviews are ALWAYS appreciated! Rick, I know you had the same bike as me for years, but I lift my f800gs facing the bike with my chest over the seat and then just push into the bike and it pops right up, no sweat. Maybe it's my size, but I find the way these gs non-boxers sit makes them really difficult to lift with my back to the bike. They just lay too low and the weight is up high. I'm only 5'7" and it's difficult to get the leverage. I've tried all combos, and for me, that is the best one. Had the Triumph and loved it, but I'm really interested in your Africa Twin review. Will you be doing one on the DCT? I'm 66 and am really thinking about the DCT as I don't do as much off road anymore. Your reviews are really excellent. Thanks!

I was looking at the f900gs and the desert x rally. You hit two points that are significant. First is the starbucks button, i love my vanilla lattes. Second is the air filter. Its such a chore on the ducati vs the f900gs. Thanks for putting this together for the adv community. Amazing review as usual.

Excellent video. As for dealing in suspension, maybe you could have put a rip tie around the fork to see how much it was compressing, that would have helped you dial into fuller movement, not too much, to try to get it to be more plush? It’s so difficult without knowing how much the fork Actuates compresses, then you can just dial in rebound? Super super review, you are the best in the business. Thumbs up

Honestly, I cannot find a compelling reason to pick this bike (or the competitors you list) over a Tuareg. I can fully farkle a Tuareg with custom everything and ship it to South America, for less. After you get to 80ish hp, I will not (as a 62 year old average at best rider) be able to use more power. Also, as an aside, how did we get to a place where a freaking liter bike was "middleweight"? To me, 500-700cc and under 450# is middleweight. If you disagree, pick up a 500# bike 6 times after being out in the bush for 6 hours...

this is the video I have been waiting. I got my f 900 gs 2 months ago, from the first batch in my country(Turkey). I got the enduro pro package one which is the fullest here with the suspensions and cruise control, keyless etc. I just passed 2000kms on that beast and I still can't say I ride this bike comfortably. I'm ~170cm tall and 100+kg heavy (yes I'm fat :) Unfortunately I couldn't get the low seat option because of the stock problems here, so I got it trimmed some where here and my previous bike was ktm 390 adv so I'm kinda used to tall bikes. The problem is not the height, it's the weight and the price of it. It's so heavy to ride in traffic and in city. And it's so expensive to have kind of a reckless mindset in offroad event I got the original engine guards. To be honest I like going offroad but I use the bike daily for commuting and getting around in a big city (I live in Istanbul). So I'm mainly onroad. I gotta say I bought this bike because of the brand , performance and the looks. It's just gorgeous, the passion package. So now I'm seriously considering look back into Triumph Tiger Rally Pro or Aprilla Tuareg 660. Because I see that I need a bike with proper removable luggage options, kinda light and also offroad capable. cheers ✌

I just tried the 390 Adv, 450 Himalayan, Vstrom 650, CFMoto 450MT, Versus 300X and just because it was there... a Vstrom 250. And what the hell, I had the most fun on the little 250! It's tall, but super light and narrow, perfect for on-road commutes. I did not think I would like that more than the 450 MT. So I feel you, heavy tall bikes are great, until you have to commute on them as a modest heighted person that I am too.

Another great review Ian! You never mentioned the brakes at all - are they as good as the more expensive Brembos like the Ducati, Tiger, etc have? I also wondered whether you have thought of getting prices for all your test bikes on parts that are easily damaged. - clutch and brake levers, mirrors, exhaust, etc. This might be useful for your followers to understand some of the drawbacks of certain models. Thanks!

Great review Ian. I struggle (literally) with the weight of these bikes which are all pretty similar. The fuel range is poor for an “adventure bike”, doubtless in the quest to keep “wet” weight down. I’m riding a KTM 690 Enduro on the TAT and DBR. So far we are on day 5, around 185 miles per day and increasing the off-road proportion. 18 days to go and a 4,200 mile total distance. It’s “adventurised” with a Nomad tower, Rade Garage range extender, a Seat Concepts seat, Kineo tubeless wheels plus a lot of other bits and pieces. My point: it’s light, first and foremost. It’s excellent on the road with 50:50 tyres. Off-road it’s very competent and capable. My fuel economy is incredible. Initially over 66 mpg with 50% off-road still over 62 mpg (US gallons). I’m keeping up with my Tiger 900 riding buddy, incidentally. My overall fuel range is 280 miles with 30 on reserve. All it needs is better vibration damping on the handlebars (still not bad by any measure) and, perhaps, a little more seat padding. I’m only 5’8” but with a lowering link is perfectly manageable. Soft luggage completes the package. My point: light, capable, amazing fuel range and way cheaper than the competition.

@@benniewenniger2075 I feel like the heat issue is blown out of proportion. If I have boots on I don't feel the heat. My canam outlander 4 wheeler is way worse and nobody on atv forums complain. I had a 2004 r1 that heated the seat and frame between my legs that was also way more unpleasant than the tuareg.

I have been watching your videos for about 6 months now. For 2024, I am going with the Honda Africa Twin base model, non-DCT. Like you said, great updates for 2024 with the tubeless tires, adjustable windscreen, and 5.5 gallon fuel tank. I plan to do about 70% street and 30% dirt. Additionally, i am going to get a 2024 CF450 Motto MT (Ibex)....plan on riding 60% dirt and 40% on road with this one....that being said, i can't wait to see your videos and reviews on both of these models. I looked hard at the BMW F900 in all black but your video helped me decide to get the Africa Twin instead. The windbuffeting, fuel range, and luggage options caused me to shy away from the BMW. More than that, however, had to do with the exceptionally poor customer service at my BMW dealership in Colorado Springs. I actually submitted an online purchase order request for the BMW F900 on two occasions and that dealerships failed to contact me both times.

Another great review. I think if I had $20k to spend on an ADV bike I would look into finding a used Tiger 1200 for around $10k for longer distance touring bike and get a left over 23 Aprilla 660 for off road, I have been seeing them for around $10k. But for now I will stick to my 2020 Africa Twin but I do wish the suspension was better on it. Since having spinal cord surgery that messed up my legs I am having a little trouble with the height and weight of the AT for off road BDR style riding which is what got me looking at the 660

@BigRockMoto Great review. If you would need a bike for a 50 / 50 application and you would only have 2 alternatives…. Would you go for the BMW 900 GS or the 2023 KTM 890 R ? I do own a R1250 GSA for traveling and looking for something that is more off road capable.

KTM 890 Adv R ... NO doubts about it! best performance suspension, best performance motor, best performance weight distribution and crash protection from scratch without adding silly crash bars. the 900GS looks quite vulnerable to me and suspension not worth the money.

The review we all were waiting for😎. Thanks, Ian, for great and deep review 👌🏻 as I am in the crossroads to choose the midsize direction onwards, this is what I was waiting for. Here in EU, at least in our small and proud Latvia, BMW offers 5 year warranty. Seems nobody can beat that. For the looks it is Tenere or Desert X. T7 is past, but for muddy, technical terrain with DesertX I am afraid to hit that fuel tank. I cannot understand how they have made it like this as Adventure bike, including air filter fitment 🤷🏼‍♂️. Regarding KTM / Husky I am affraid for all the possible reliability issues … BMW seems to be that sweet spot… Somehow I ca not live with Tuareg 660 front design 🤷🏼‍♂️

Here is Oz, the 900 GS are selling around $26,500 AUD on road. Most are advertised as demos to allow drop in RRP. The go to comparison for me would be 2024 F900 GS Enduro pack plus the Dynamic pack compared with 2023/4 Nordern 901 Expedition. The Nordens brand new can be had for a little less money but as demos you would save around $3,000 AUD. Leaving price aside, the specifications are very similar so for me it would come down to riding the bikes in all conditions. With the design of the Norden I would expect it to win off road and be equal or slightly under the BMW on the highway. I have a 901 and find it hard to fault. Both are good looking. I have BMW brand loyalty and maybe that would swing me along with a possible improved long term resale value.
