There's a more affordable route into BMW i3 ownership and that's by buying a used one.
It's been on sale since 2013 but time hasn't softened the i3's looks and cool style. And because it's been around for a while, there's plenty to choose from on the used market.
But what should you look for when buying a car like this? Ginny takes an in-depth and detailed look at a typical 2018 second-hand model.
Here's our full guide to used electric cars over on Electrifying.com:

Owner of a second hand 2017 i3rex. After 18 months of ownership, getting 4.5 miles per kWh. Summer range in ‘eco pro’ is around 140 miles on the electric plus another 80 on the Rex. Love the car and the review was spot on based on my experience. Only complaint is tires only good for 20K and slightly more expensive than standard tires here in the US. Look forward to more reviews from this channel and presenter.

As an i3 owner, I agree with the vast majority of this review. One correction though, the composite black material on the door cards and below the windscreen is not made from recycled plastic bottles, it is made from the knauf plant and a resin. The seats on the entry level interior are made from recycled plastic bottles.

thas like saying aluminum is a fancy word for metal...when repairing knowing which materials matter or a mixed material construction like a tesla or luxury car with aluminium. And you actualy have to make a lap joint/when sectioning these cars at times with 1 steel plate/panel lapped over aluminum or reveresed.....epoxy as a bond between the panels bc 2 different metals...and holes drilled....and pop riveted as a "weld"/joint.

Great little car. I had the original one for 5 yrs and did 63k miles with only major cost being tyre punctures. The range improvement over the years makes it so much better. Very spacious inside although some people will find the suicide doors annoying as well as rear windows not going down. Rex was never a great idea for those who truly want to switch to fully electric.

I have had my “Litl’ Blue” 2017 BMW i3 BEV 33Kw 94Ah since 01/25/2021. I bought it in showroom condition from an original owner with 24k on the odometer. I’m 75, drive it about 30-100 miles a month mostly to pick up online ordered groceries and to visit the VA clinic. I use a 240V, 16A (3.84Kw) Level 2 charger in my carport routed inside as an alternate device to my dryer outlet. I gain 13.5 miles per hour of charging up to 124 to 137 miles, and from home my electric cost is $0.031 per Mile which at an average gas price of $4.00 per gallon equates to 129 MPG. If there is a more perfect EV out there, I simply don’t want it. I don’t need more range, acceleration, styling, features, reliability, comfort, handling, or value. Litl’ Blue is obviously my Forever Car. Paid $16,500 but was offered $22,400 by Edmunds/CarMax 4 months ago which tickled my worn out ego. You may name yours too.🚙

As a 2019 120Ah (42kWh) i3 owner, I can report that this is a great car for couples, it's not perfect though. My biggest gripe is poor ride quality; the i3 really can crash and bang over U.K. B and C roads - yes even on 19 inch wheels. An extra down side of this is the appearance of annoying rattles from the interior, which gets shaken apart by the harsh ride. Having said all that, I love the car. It's my first EV, and I will not go back to ice by choice.

Love the i3, tremendous acceleration between 20 - 50mph, if I ever part with my 3.0 6 speed e85 z4, I'm definitely going electric, and a used i3 will definitely be on the potential purchase list, But atm I just can't do without top down motoring and a straight six lol. I recently got a Xiaomi scooter and just love the way you charge and ride without keep putting fuel in, can fully understand why alot more people are going electric.

I have a 2017 33kWh BEV - 24k miles so far and really very happy with it. I have the sunroof, rear camera, front and rear parking sensors, 20" wheels, and upgraded media unit. I think the camera and sunroof are the best options. No discernable range loss so far. No plans to get rid of it as it has very little in the way of wear on it. Only running costs so far (other than the super-cheap fuel) has been one service and one set of rear tyres.
@wbachd1
@wbachd1 2 года назад
nicee! hi, Nick! I'm from the 🇺🇸 I about to purchase to an I3 just like yours. I wonder what do you think about the 20" wheels ride? smooth, harsh... etc.. also; are you worried at all about the loss of drive connect features ( GPS, App, assistant) stops working on Feb 2022 due to the end of 3G antennas? do you even use this features. thanks!
@nixer65
@nixer65 2 года назад
@@wbachd1 Hi wbachd1 - the 20”s are marginally harsher than the 19’s, but nowhere near the i3s ride. The i3 does suffer from some choppiness in the ride given the short wheelbase, but that is the same across the whole range. It’s not ever going to be a plush ride, but I find it very acceptable and comfortable and when compared to something like my new Polestar 2, well it is positively soft! As far as I understand the 2017 model year was the first with the 4G TCU so you should be OK if you get that (at least that is the case in the UK). If you’re looking at a 2016 then you might want to go for a later car - I use the app quite regularly for changing timers and remotely warming the car up and would miss that feature.

I have 2016 66 plate 33kWh REX. Still pay £0 road tax as it was registered before 1st April 2017. That is when the regulations changed so that any CO2 emissions will cost you £130 a year and if the car was valued at over £40k new you can add a further £300 a year on top. Mine was £41k new but got used for £25k when 2 years old. Just love it. The REX is a real life saver if you can't find a charger or they are all in use. Recommend getting a 66 reg REX 33kw(94ah). Bought a used 2017 i3 REX DEKA last year, very happy with it. Not sure if I'd buy again. Couple of issue - $1,500 every two years just for basic maintenance - first car to ever need snow tires (about another $1,000)

$ 1500 for what, to change the brake pads and lube callipers 1hr. per wheel find a new service centre . i think your getting ripped off. wait till Musk owns all the power grids and nearly everything you use .watch the price of electricity go through the roof, like they did with diesel cars in UK.

@@douglastodd1947 I should add, that I go to the BMW dealership, and I'm sure I could get the same maintenance for less else where. I'm prepared to pay the premium while its under warranty but will probably switch to another garage after that.

Used BMW i3's are very cheap in North America. A quick search shows 2017 i3 REX models with less than 30K miles selling for $19K USD. When new, these were selling for over $50K USD. The skinny tires are somewhat difficult to find here.
@mamadouaziza2536
@mamadouaziza2536 3 года назад
The tires are plentiful if ordered. A lot of due diligence is needed by the buyer of a used i3; the buyer should find out about the car's battery health, how often the battery was level 3 charged. Get maintenance records and check that all recalls were performed. Not all i3s have backup cameras, ACC autonomous driving, self parking or advance navigation. $15k about right for a fully loaded i3 from 2014 thru 2016.

The i3 is an amazing little car. Odd that BMW seemed to have lost interest in EVs for a few years after it’s release. BMW should be as far forward as Tesla or Hyundai/Kia and even Renault, but it’s still keeping its powder dry. The only car rivalling the i3 in market is the Id.3 (which should be called Gelf or Elf or some such).

They aren't bad as local runarounds. I'm temped to sell my Lotus Elise and Abarth 500 and buy one due to the crazy fuel prices now. But it has to be the hybrid version as around 75 mile on a charge just isn't enough really. Used ones have depreciated quite nicely so I'd have quite a bit of money to spare.

The REX presents a useful choice for buyers. It provides a safety net, but adds purchase cost, running costs in terms of tax, complexity leading to higher maintenance & repair costs, & (from what I've read) reduced reliability, and weight with slightly reduced performance and efficiency. With good planning, the REX mostly wouldn't be need though nice to have on the rare occasions when it is needed. How rare is the question. Personally, I'd try hard to get at least a 33 Kwh version and not the REX.

Correction- this isn’t BMW’s only electric vehicle! The i3 and i8 are both full-electric and were the original “experiments” per se into the electric market
@badgastein2
@badgastein2 3 года назад
The i8 is no longer in production. The i3 is no longer made in USA but the Leipzig factory in Europe still makes the i3 after a change of heart by BMW. Two new electric BMW’s are due to be released in late 2021.

This car is identical to mine - Protonic Blue i3 S 94ah REx with Lodge interior and sunroof. My second i3 and absolutely fabulous little car. S whilst not much faster than the standard car sits on the road so much better thanks to lower suspension, wider tyres and wider track. Not quite MINI go kart handling but pretty close and much better packaged. If you are looking for a used i3 a great place to check out is Wisely Automotive - a used i3 specialist who have up to 20 cars in stock at any one time.
@chrishyde1216
@chrishyde1216 3 года назад
The i3s may be more stable (and in my view looks better) but also has a firmer ride. I suppose a compromise option would be to get the standard i3 and fit wider wheels and tyres...but will it take wider wheels without the i3s wheel arch flares?
@richardpiper4828
@richardpiper4828 3 года назад
@@chrishyde1216 unfortunately no. When the LCI) update was introduced BMW did offer a the sport suspension pack as an option on the standard car but this was never made available in the UK. Some owners have fitted spacers to widen the track which if they are not too wide and you stay with the standard 19” wheels do not need the wheel spats. These wheel arch extensions have to be fitted to modified panels.

I seriously shopped the i3 REX but at the time I needed more electric range. I also didn't like that it can only fit one tire that is expensive and only seems to last about 20K miles.

The i3 is 100% all electric even when the REx is engaged. The battery and electric motor is feeding off electricity generated by the REx when the REx is activated. 2017 i3s get about 100 miles non REx and once the REx is activated, it gets another 100 miles=200.
