My bad. At 0:36, I say Stuttgart, but I really meant Munich. Also, if you're interested in the new BMW M850i, check out my review here >>> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8g1qFTHeuVU.html
i8 owner here. I enjoyed your review, it was thorough and the edits were sick. A couple of common misconceptions with the i8: 1) Every mile that one drives in sport mode recharges the i8 battery 1 mile. 2) The i8 has launch mode.
@@nb7609 Hi. Kind of. The most battery range I ever got was 16 miles. It’ll charge up to 10 miles (i.e. Drive the i8 16 miles on battery to zero, drive 10 miles in sport mode and you’ll have 10 miles of battery range).
Tell me how I was thinking about how fast this car is, while I was in the shower and then I go to my living room and get on RU-vid and this is on my recommend
perfect example how someone buys an ad that HAS good content .. so many people buy ads and have terrible content behind it. loved the video good job man also wanted to say that this review was amazingly put together . i watch reviews all day long (doug demuro fan) and this was almost like a movie . yet again amazing job
@@matador6604 you can find used 2015 models with 45k miles for 50 ish. Not a great deal considering a 2016 with 15k miles is available for 62k but it can be done if you're willing to look around. Either way, around 60ish k it's a great looker.
Your i8 best is the best so far I have seen, very professional edit and a good closing statement. It is true that this car totally not worth any close to the retail price but price as now is like 65k can get a CPO and 55k for non CPO make this a bargain for this caar.
the review was fair enough for fast cars. i traded my c7 for an i8. i feel like myself anti social person since i owned camaro/corvette id like something comfy, quiet useful and looks nice. I only had to choose between i8/lc500/ maserati gt those cars are in 1 categories unlike other sport cars. nowadays mclaren gt came out to my favor however not reliable enough comlare to its price. also mclaren gt and lc are both rwd cars.
Great video but your missing the point. The car is all about good gas mileage, that happens to be fun but not have the current disadvantages of a full electric. It would have been very easy for BMW to put a 2.0L 4 pot in it with 350bhp + the 130bhp electric.
James Stacey er...no I don’t think so. He doesn’t like the car because it’s too expensive for the performance on offer. The car wasn’t designed to provide the best acceleration for a price (the concept even had a diesel). Why not road test a $150k dumper truck and whine about the top speed- well because it’s not designed to go fast.
@@iainjohnston4929 You are still missing the point as he clearly states the point of his channels, which is performance! His channel is not a "fuel economy" channel!
Great video man👍🏽💯 I can't wait to I get one🚘 idc about the speed,it will get the job done for me when I pull up at the gas station though 🤴🏽 but I will trade it in Eventually for a mclaren 720s.💪🏽
I love your videos man, really high quality stuff. One thing I'm curious about is how all of these cars handle. Is there a way to quantify handling (maybe 'X' amount of lateral Gs at 'Y' mph)? I'd like to see a comparison of those numbers as well.
Thank you for the comment and suggestion! I've been trying to find a way to quantify the handling as I do the acceleration, but I think the most effective way is definitely lap times around the same test track with the same driver. Sadly, that's easier said than done for a small channel like myself. I'll look into seeing if I can find a big enough parking lot to do a skidpad setup though. That would be a good start I think.
I think it's good that you acknowledge that you're focusing only on performance in your channel. Otherwise one would have to say that you're missing the point about this car. You didn't mention fuel efficiency, for example.
if you put the 4.4 v8 engine in this from the m6 and tune it you could easily get 700 hp but you'd have to get a special transmission but with modifications it could be done then this car would be a beast
I got my heart set on one. I can tell you that it beats my Renault Kadjar on every single point except for extra room to take some people along. Actually that is a plus! hahaha.. I hardly do 7000 kilometres a year but when I am in the car I like to do it with a smile... So I am gonna ditch that Renault and by that Bimmer...
Pretty good Pro/Con list and smooth video as always 👍 Clarkson prefered the i8 over the M3. Never really understood his decision. Any chance that we get a "making off"? Would be interesting.
Thanks, if they were both the same price, I'd probably go i8 just for the cool factor, but unfortunately that is not the case. Working on a "making of" video may be a little difficult because it's usually just me and my wife shooting so we'd need a third person to do that. I do some BTS shots on Instagram though. I am working on what I call "Track Day TV Director's Cut" which will be more relaxed videos where it's just raw first impressions or thoughts. One of those will be out soon to test the waters.
The i8 is design-wise very cool, maybe one of the best looking cars BMW has every made. I totally forgot, that you are shooting these videos with your wife, no problem. A Director's Cut could be really cool, looking forward for that. :) I've to check out your Instagram, sounds interesting!
I'm trying to purchase 1 next month lol, I started searching on google and now RU-vid is putting all these videos in my recommendations.😂😂, I'm not mad.
Thanks! The only reason I don't include the 0-60 and 0-100 is because there are too many variables (launch, road conditions, tires, etc.) and I can't get 0-60 0-100 on every car I test. I mainly focus on 40-100 and 60-130 because these metrics are not commonly covered but are more crucial than 0-60, in my opinion.
Looks it gets a 9/10 Performance it gets 6/10 It would have been better if it had the Mecedes turbo 4 and the electric motors then it would have NSX levels of performance
Yea brother I love my Z06 stick shift tho. Running E85. What street tires you recommend the Michelin s gave me less than 5K miles. Your fan from Rochester New York York
@@fisher0070 If you're running sport cup 2's, yeah 5k miles sounds about right. For the street, I run super sports but in 345/30R19 on aftermarket wheels. You're probably making more power than me though.
well, if youre an old school purists, and you want the loud exhausts that scare people into looking at you, and speed that you can't really use on us roads anyway, that you best take to the track only for weekend toy, then yea. i8 not for you.
Cars I would buy over it Audi R8 NSX 911 Carrera 4S Redeye Vantage C7 Z06 GT500 Demon Viper TA AMG GT S M6 Grand Coupe 570S This is just not in the top 10 cause of performance
Wow! That was a great video! Beautifully done and an honest review. We bought a 2015 a year ago and it is a really easy car to live with. I wouldn't call it a supercar - maybe supercar flavored, but it is fun to drive. Our 996TT feels much faster, but on my drives to work and around town, this is much easier to live with. It really is rather unique and props to BMW for building it. It's not an M, it is an i... All your points are completely valid. But, at its current value, it is very hard to pass up. We couldn't. Again, really enjoyed the video!
Dude...with running costs of around 1/3 or 1/4th of what an r8 or an dbs cost just to drive for a year...this car is absolutly fantastic and way above them. But you should Buy it used rather then new.
Remove the gas engine for the 4.4L V8 TT “, remove the useless seats and it would fit. Realistically the s63 V8 but my dreams says the BMW V12 from the M760Li. Add M4 GTS tires and the I8 is good to go. 750HP with full 4.4L with the electric engine.
So glad I recently discovered your channel, you are absolutely spot on in your review of this BMW I8. A few years back I took one for a Good long test drive and was absolutely not impressed by it unfortunately, I understand what they tried to accomplish but they fell short. Absolutely not worth the money, not a bad looking car but absolutely lacks across-the-board. Thank you so much for your very honest review, did I mention how happy I am that I discovered your channel? Almost forgot, greetings from Vancouver 🇨🇦
The thing that keeps coming back in all those I8 reviews is how reviewers always focus on the 3 cylinder engine. Maybe he should say it's a 3 cylinder engine coupled with two electrical motors. The car was designed as a hybrid to start with. I don't hear people focus so much on the combustion engine when they talk about a Lexus lc500h or a la Ferrari. In any case, what it proves is that BMW made the wrong design choice. This car has great traction and acceleration but people only pay attention to the fact that it's a mini engine. Also the fake noise really seem to bother people... Had I not known, I would have never noticed so it wouldn't matter to me. ...Numbers show that too. I don't think there are many cars that took such a depreciation hit so quickly. you can get a 2016 with 30-40k miles for $55-60k nowadays.
Guys? Just me and my camera here. Private tiny little RU-vid channel. And please, the first comment down there is me apologizing for my mistake. Cut a guy some slack when he's doing this as a passion.
I have one of these as my daily driver and commute car and the economy /performance ratio is just mind blowing. You just cannot find that level of performance per gallon at that price point anywhere. I love this car for the total package. I have other cars in my garage that scratch different itches: a 570GT for speed and supercar experience and a DB9 for old school petrol head runs to a roaring V12 soundtrack so I'm spoilt for choice but the i8 does pretty much everything without huge compromises (except when something goes wrong but that's a whole other story).
I felt everything that you were were talking about when you were describing the love of the BMW.. You could have said that about any other vehicle but the passion is what sold it!!!! More content please sir.
The wheels are on backwards. Also you compare with just traditional measure and in doing so, I think miss the sweet spots of this unique piece of engineering. Once you have been ( torque filled) fired out of corners the i8 way, others seem slow and faster 1/4 mile are going to eat your dust. I also think the quiet "serenity mode" experience of these cars is to be appreciated. This car offers both and that is some worthy feat of engineering to be cherished.
review is awesome as usual. I must say this car has the looks but also has the stupidest powertrain combo for such sexy looking car. The I8's powertrain should be in the 3 series or x1 or x2 kind of a car. Imagine if the I8 had the M4 powertrain. Doesn't that make better sense !?
Thanks! I think the hybrid powertrain is a good approach. I just wish they gave it more power, like 450HP would've been perfect. Or an M4 engine lol. But I guess that's why they have the new M850i 😉
I would like to add that I raced one of these a few weeks ago! There owner was pissed,I smoked it so bad on the highway that I LET HIM catch up because I didn't know what it was and was curious. I wanted to make sure he was trying!! I do have a modified G37 SEDAN with bolt ons. 340rwhp.. I ran 12.5 quarter mile. I don't know my 60-130 times but it was fun beating a car that looks like that!
The i8 is a very unique sounding car, although it has that active sound system shit. For a little motor like that, it sure gets up quick. I’ll watch the last quarter of the vid in a bit, but my track day was awesome by the way. I pushed my car to the limit and I got a ride in a ZL1 1LE on the track! Sadly I have had an issue with my channel the past few months to where I cannot upload any vids. I’ve been working to get it fixed but hope is fading slowly for the channel as RU-vid hasn’t been helpful ): if I’m able to upload a video though, you’ll be one of the first to know via comment. I’ll drop the link in. It is a VERY long video. 50 minutes but it’s a whole vlog so it’s the morning to the track and the day at the track. Sadly it was ended early because a C7 stingray crashed rear end first into a barrier and went through it. It went under the barrier so the frame was fine but the entire rear end to the cockpit was demolished. All the fiberglass was ripped apart too. Was sad to see. Anyways sorry for the long comment. I actually finished the vid as I wrote the comment so it played in the background. I really love the way this i8 looks. It’s a hard car to make look ugly. Very quick for the size of engine it has, but hybrid engines are the future of cars. How amazing right?
Hm, that's weird. Have you tried making a burner account to see if it's your account? Or perhaps just your particular computer. Look forward to seeing you getting it sorted out. I went off track a few times in my time but yeah, going through a wall is terrifying. I hope the driver is okay. It can be pretty mentally destabilizing. The i8 is a very pretty car, even when shooting it, I noticed that it was photogenic from every angle, and honestly, I like the way it looks and what it represents. But I don't like that they gave it such a weak powertrain in it. 450+ HP would've made it worth the price tag.
Track Day TV it’s the account. Phone and computer uploads don’t work. The driver was okay. Car survived but will receive $20,000 in repairs. Glad I didn’t end up in the wall man. BMW released the i8 with too little power too late into the 2010s. Cars were already way ahead of the i8 by the time bmw managed to get it on the road. It was pushed back a couple of years i heard. Not sure why but, that’s why it just isn’t fast. It even has that massive power delay, which shows that the motor just isn’t powerful enough for the car itself. I love the way it looks, but definitely is not worth the price, for the sound nor the performance whatsoever. The TTRS is 1/3rd the price and is better in nearly every aspect. Even the RS3 is cheaper, a tad bit slower, but still outdoes the i8. If they made an i8 M, it’d be cool to see a better powertrain or maybe a bigger turbo for the car. It’s just too slow right now for what it’s priced at. Sweet video by the way. Glad you got to experience more BMW again
I guess that's why they sell HPDE and Track Day insurance. It's worth it if you know you go hard at the track or if the track doesn't have great run off. I hope you get the account sorted out soon. I'd be really annoyed if something like that happened to me. Yeah, the i8 is basically just a pretty looking car with no performance to back up all that cool-ness. The technology is definitely there, BMW just chooses not to enhance the performance. Perhaps they want to save it for the M8 or M850i to be the better performing car of the series. But yes, I've been doing a lot more German cars lately. The next few will also be German. Still no AMG yet though lol.
Track Day TV I think if you did an AMG you should get your hands on either the S63 coupe or the S65 coupe. Those aren’t really performance as most of your cars on the channel are, but I think it would be a really sweet touch of luxurious sport to the channel, but it’s ultimately up to you. I’d say start small and eventually get to the S Coupe AMG, but it’d be a huge surprise to see a luxury car like that on your channel. Interesting thing about the S65 is that it’s slower than the 63 because it is much heavier actually. Really interesting how that all works. Anyways, hopefully bmw enhances the i8 soon, gives it more to look up to. Really glad to see a hybrid car on your channel though. Have a nice rest of your weekend man!
Thank you for this amazing masterpiece. I dont think people actually realize the true message of your video. Although you were negative about it overall, your cinematography, composition, art and production put this car in the best visual presentation as possible. In other words, if you put your video on mute lol...you make the i8 look better than most exotics out there. Excellent work sir!
Also: * THere is one tuner that ALSO tunes the electric engines. Within factory specs - seems they are underrated a little. *Three ARE wider tires. BMW offers them, OR aftermarket (really wide then). Generall sucks this is cancelled and no upgrade to the new engines. Heck, even the new Mini R engine would give it a brutal speed bump. Re back seats: They are there for legal reasons. They even have adapters for a child seat. So, techncially this is a 4 seater, which is taxed different in soem countries. The best use, though, is for luggage - I spent a long week in my i8 last year (9 days to be exact) on holidays and with 3 stanadard Trolleys and a Duffel 2 people can handle this nicely.
