Yeah, it looks great, it's a different design, but I think fits perfectly for something that must be futuristic. It was bit expensive at launch, but now after 3 years becomes more affordable, so can take your chance! 🍀

True, however once you personalize functions (ie, it can automatically set temp, turn on seat vent or heat at designated outside temps). I have the previous OS and I barely adjust anything except the music and maps. So for me it does make the driving experience better. Also, you can change the assistants activate/wake up from word the standard "hey BMW".

I had an iX M50 on loan last weekend and found it a soulless experience. It was undoubtedly quick but once the novelty of that had worn off (which it did surprisingly quickly) I struggled to find anything about the car that made me want to go out and just drive it. I’ve had other electric vehicles - BMW i4 40 and then the M50 and the Tesla Model Y Performance and they all seemed to have a draw that you just couldn’t resist - you just felt the need to go out and drive them. They were fun and enjoyable - they made the drive - any drive, for that matter, seem special. The iX M50 on the other hand just didn’t offer that feeling - not once after the first drive in it did I feel the need to get up and just go for a drive. I’m still not entirely sure what it was about the car that made me feel this way. Perhaps it was its sheer size, weight or jelly-mould looks. Or perhaps it was the fact that I couldn’t figure out how it could possibly cost £116,000 and not feel like it did. Whatever it was, it just didn’t work for me and I wasn’t sorry to see the back of it when it was returned on the Monday.

I think the heat controls are overplayed. My 7 i set and it is always perfect. The steering wheel I have set based on outside temp.

Look at the nice flip open covers for the charging ports. Mercedes just puts the DC one on a stupid plastic thing that hangs out when charging.

From what I saw the extra power is only available for short bursts. However it is actually cheaper as it comes with all options if you go mad with the 50.

What is the point of the IX 40?? The iX3 is cheaper and has longer range and is more or less same size.

Why dont you ask the asistent to stay stopped, that would be a good test. The ix40 is only around 20% more than the ix3 with same size battery, can tow 2.500kg.

Hi Thomas, is it not possible to precondition the car manually ? As far as I know you can at least programm a departure time so the battery should get preheated.

Battery only gets preheated (or cooled) if the car has a departure time set AND it's plugged into an EVSE with at least 3kW output (so not the little cable it comes with) - otherwise it's just the cabin that is preconditioned. This is the case since the i3 in 2014. There is nothing smart about it preconditioning before you show up to a charger.

This is frustrating to watch. I own a current gen 330d and I always praised BMWs infotainment system. The controls are close to perfect, so is the OS. I always felt like BMW “gets” the drivers. What I see here / in OS8 looks so terrible, what on earth are they thinking?!? I already dread the day when I “have” to switch, I can only pray they realize how bad it is and what a step backwards this is from OS7 :(

Sure you don't need to spend 150k euro on an IX, lol. Since I have to move to Canada, I can sell you my IX 40 with bowers wilkins and massage for 60k euro. Only got 17k km, all highway km, and range up to 420-430 km.

Well Thomas is taking note of the other youtube testers who do in depth tests. Good effort but others have differing camera placement so you can see the displays and infra red light flickering. However the attention to the body crease lines is a trademark of this channel. I don't think BMW have any idea what aesthetically pleasing means.

Still don’t like the open footwell design. The driver’s footwell is open for access to the passenger side. Get a water bottle for example stuck under the brake pedal and in the nanosecond before ramming the car in front, you may regret that design… When somebody sues BMW they will change it. And wish people would stop suggesting that voice control is a substitute for physical buttons. It isn’t. Having to tell your children to shut up because you want to activate steering wheel heating is not the answer.

200 kW theoretical max charge speed is less than in a much cheaper Korean car with much smaller battery. BMW and Mercedes are just lagging behind, and I don't think they need to. Porsche offered 270 kW already a few years ago.

They sustain that charging speed over a larger time period. So overall it charges in the same time.

​@@SDav21 Nah, it takes longer to charge this car. But it's about 10 minutes longer. Not exactly the end of the world. It also has higher base range, so the 80% in this car is worth more miles than the Korean cars.

The peak charge rate is irrelevant. The relevant metric is the average charge speed.

200kW is the maximum for a car with 400V architecture, because the charger can only deliver 500A. So 400V x 500A = 200kW. In general, you can say, that a higher charging speed needs more cobalt and this is definitely not a good thing to have. What’s interesting is the average charging speed between 10 and 80 % SoC. And here the iX is definitely not leading, but I think you could call it „state of the art“… Charging time is more or less the same than EQS

I enjoy your videos!!! One thing I really don’t understand is the importance of wanting to change the temperature easily - and ”all the time”. Personally I’ve set the temperature to 21 and haven’t needed to change it the last 8 years, unless I needed ”full power” to get it to 21. Why change a temperature that’s already perfect? Almost every review I see about EV:s it’s about how difficult it is to set a new temperature via the display. Why need a physical control for something like that? Is it because there is a need to use the fingers everywhere to just ”move around”? And about voice and gesture control. Why not just shut it off instead of complaining about it saying that it’s better to buy another car instead? Details that can be changed easily, but made very big. I really don’t get it??? Where is the balance? By the way - while driving - you shouldn’t mess around - instead you should look at how and where you are driving. AND if there is an OTA - it could all be fixed in the next version. Why not ask BMW to do smart things, like cooling the car when there is a child or a pet inside (Tesla-inspired 😎) - that’s worth so much more that ”playing around” with an interface. Or could life saving things like AC ”while in the shop mode” be about ”not-invented-here”? I have a hard time believing this could be protected by a patent. It should also be an easy fix - or? And comlaining about the looks. Wow - there are so many ugly cars in the world… Like Bentley - or Rolls Royce. And I just have a very hard time with the ”nosy” looks of AlfaRomeo - how could they make a front grill like that😂 But they are Classics - AND - luxury cars - so they look great - or?

I agree with you re climate control A/C, as opposed to the old systems of rotating dials to adjust the temperature constantly, changes to the settings are very rarely required, summer or winter. The only changes I make while on the move are for music or navigation and this can often be done with voice activation. Once other controls are set, you don't have to change them.

I wonder if most people knew how the cobalt for the batteries is mined and the lithium, not to mention the graphite which all batteries need which produced in uk for most of Europe which comes from crude oil, if they’d still think ev’s are the future?? BMW got so many things right and so many things wrong with this vehicle. For example, the driving experience seems fantastic but the OS 8 UI is on par with using your cellphone while driving.

I don't really understand why so many companies are trying to create those big and bulky EV SUV. That itself goes against the idea of EV cars. They are already big, heavy and have bad aerodynamics.

I think at this point car companies want us to live in the car, it's EV, big enough for one and relatively affordable if you consider it as a house, those speaker are nice, I'd comfortable to live in this car if my neighborhood have less crime rate

@@AZzalor6632 well for one a sedan and an SUV are two different types of vehicles. A sedan has a trunk separate from the cabin. An SUV is extending the cabin into the cargo area. The sheer cargo capacity is enlarged by an SUVs design. Which affects the practicality component. Hope that helps define the difference between the 2.

@@derrickjscottds That is actually not true. I know that cargo and room are often arguments that are told, but they are wrong. Except you take the really big SUVs with a truck bed, there are always normal cars that can have the same cargo space. Also, there are definitly sedans where the trunk is not separated from from the cabin...those are most sedans that I know at least. Most SUVs are simply sedans that have more ground clearance and have higher base but that's it. That's why cars like this iX for example make no sense at all as they can't do anything that a normal sedan couldn't.

I do like the car in real life. It grows on you and yes, the interior is beautiful. However, what I don’t understand is that when you pick the memory package on the front driver seat you have to pay 1600€ extra and you lose all the good stuff. No lumber support, message, etc. How do they explain that?

The bench on the seats is ridiculous for a car at this price. No extendable bench. Dealbreaker for sure. Quirky, edgy design, but not all that well thought out.

You should just deactivate the speech control, put it in the setting where it only activates when you press the voice control button. Overall the ergonomics, user interface, everything is absolutely horrendous in modern BMWs after they have totally abandoned their long tradition of following their own rules of ergonomics and user interface. Sure, the iDrive in many ways is industry leader, but they keep messing it up and making that worse too. The buttons are ever worse, their grouping is ever worse, just horrible...

BMW needs to do away from JBL sound system , that brand is synonymous with bad quality, BMW should partner with BURMESTER , MBL OR T+A for truly German sound system, instead of the American junk, but then again BMW,s X series are now predominantly made in USA, this explains it all.

I know taste and design is usually subjective, but it's going to take some time getting used to seeing these monstrosities on the road. I guess in some ways its better than the much better looking IX3 that somehow still looks like a cheap electrified first gen. X3

There is nothing subjective about taste and design at all. If it would be, then Michael Angelo sculptures and pictures were not amazing for hundred years, as same as most of the Ferraris (not for hundred years but still). Most of the people have the same perception of beauty - for example symetrics. Some od new BMW are just shitty looking cars and their designer tries to add some weird philosophy to that.

Lucid Air sedan: 670 hp on the front axle and still a 280 liter frunk. No frunk in an SUV, means you're just not trying hard enough. Frunk space matters. German brands, except for perhaps Porsche, as so lazy with packaging versus even various American (!) startups.

Totally agree. Especially since the hood is so long, there’s plenty of room for a frunk. I like having a frunk. It’d just poor design in bmws part.

That isn't laziness. That's the car being built on the existing CLAR platform (modified for this vehicle), which has already undergone thorough testing and for which BMW already has facilities setup to produce. Their NF platform coming by 2025/2026 will adjust chassis geometry. You're also comparing a car that's dividing cargo space between a trunk and a frunk, to an SUV with a hatchback and large single cargo space. There are things you simply can't do with a trunk + frunk, and weirdly shaped ones at that. Nevermind that the Lucid currently starts at about $130k usd, whereas the iX50 starts at $83k in the US. The infotainment in the Lucid is subpar as well. You can see from the interior view at 1:22 that they used the front area pretty well. Could they spend a billion dollars re-designing common parts to minimize the size of everything for a low volume vehicle to add a frunk? Sure... I guess.... How much would you, as a customer, be willing to pay for this "luxury"?

@@Wasabi9111 The hood isn't that long. Other OEMs may put some of that equipment under the floor, restricting floor space. Based on reviews, the cabin in both the front and back seats is spacious. BMW certainly could have stuffed some stuff into a full center console I guess. I'm not too happy with BMW's solution with the gap in front of the console.
