Some good comments. I think the rev-hang problem with manual-transmission cars might be emissions related. More of a priority for the 230i than the M240i and definitely a point in favour of the M-lite if manual transmission is important. However the "faster" steering of the M240i comes from the standard VSS rack, which is slower/deader around the centre but has a higher ratio towards the extremes. VSS was a ~$200 option on all other 2 series and per BMW technical data, the rack is the same part. Both being electric, there isn't a lot of feel compared to BMWs of the past.
Those are some good points. Lot's of cars with manual transmissions these days seem to have rev-hang. It looks to me like the newest Civic Si has even more rev hang than the 230i (based on watching videos). Where I live, the VSS option came as part of a package (along with adjustable dampers, M-sport brakes, and sport automatic with paddles). Unfortunately, selecting that package removed the manual transmission, but the manual was a requirement for me. Your description of the VSS makes sense. I did a lot of the M240i driving on smaller streets, at lower speeds, where you need to turn the steering more towards the extremes. That must be why I felt like the steering was faster.
I am negotiating a 230i manual M sport, built in 2016, with a very low mileage of 50k KMS (the third car of the current owner, used only on sunny days). I would be grateful for any recommendation you have for me. I am torn between the 230i manual and another offer for a 220i with automatic transmission. I enjoy driving a manual car, it is much funnier and engaging, but for daily use, the auto is far better.
One thing to keep in mind is that the 220i has the exact same engine as the 230i, except tuned for less power. If you're comfortable with tuning the car's ECU, you can get the same power out of the 230i. However, if you really like manual cars, and don't feel comfortable tuning the engine, I would suggest the 230i. The power and torque is great, the exhaust is quite nice for a 4-cylinder engine, and the chassis handles very well.
@Rotarson I bought the 230i manual, I love so much. Yes, when I am stuck in traffic is not as comfy as an auto, but who cares...the level of enjoyment when driving it is so rewarding. P.S. what's your mpg with the 230i?
@@whitebarone Congratulations!! It certainly is a lot more fun than an automatic. Ahh yes, my fuel economy gauge is in liters per 100 km since I live in a metric region. That's why the gauge numbers are ordered backwards and only go up to 20 :)
