BMW M5 Wagon Build - Exhaust Dilemma 

I felt you guys made it very clear that the $6k for the challenge was regarding the initial vehicle purchase, not the overall budget.

Use the sedan floor, oem result and its not as awkward as the rigged up version of touring floorpan

Use the sedan trunk floor. You’ll be glad you did.

Having owned a slew of German cars before my LS430, I know why the German cars have jacking pads. I always had to work on them. The Lexus? Not so much

The dual exhaust is a iconic m5 design detail, and the only exterior difference which distinguishes the e39 m5 from a m-sport. It must be done.

I love how the Lexus is just let's clean it, lower it, and supercharge it. The BMW is let's clean it, engine swap it, fix this issue...and this issue...and wire in a bunch of stuff...o yeah, brakes...ah screw it, rebuild the whole thing. 😂

for me i think i would try to graft in the whole M5 trunk floor then youll have all the mounts for both sides of the exhaust. and yes i know its a HUGE job!

It will take a day to swap out the sedan trunk floor. It's easier than it looks. Just drill out the spot welds

Unpick the boot floors and weld the sedan section in the wagon. Everything will fit then. Also on the jacking points, the pinch welds being rolled over is sign of a bad mech not bad design.

about the comment of being $6000 sedan challenge, one of the talking points should to be" Show you guys what you get when you buy a $6000 sports sedan and work required to make it new (ish) again". I never thought it would be about a total $6000 investment, but what you could buy for $6000 and turn it into a great driver. Love the show, great work, Keep it up!

they have excellent jack points so you can repair them weekly 🤣🤣🤣

When installing the cabin filter housing on the driver side, make sure it is properly seated and sealing. If it doesnt sit correctly water can get into the brake booster and cause engine damage! Yeah those jacking points are great, until they start rusting and rotting away and your jack dissapears into the sill

In Germany is a dude he builds the adjusters in metal... I have them in my 540i... They will never brake again!

do it once, do it right, just cut the trunk floor from the sedan, it might be more work, but it'll look so much cleaner.

Could've told you about the plastic noses in the headlight. In germany we call it "Scheinwerferreflektorhalter" :)

You guys should do a track ready FWD battle.

You've gone this far, no sense in half assing it now. Do it right. Cut and swap to the sedan floors. You're going to have to weld it up anyway.

Just merge the other pipe, into the other muffler for a single exit exhaust.

Of course the jack points are perfected and solid underneath a German car.... because you'll be under it fixing things regularly lol

I'd think it really makes the most sense to make it a single muffler. Saves weight that way. Will likely sound largely the same.

I totally get why one would want a m5 wagon conversion, but my god this does not seem worth it in the slightest haha. Everything is broken!!

15:50 not only that you can remove them and replace the jack pads, but you can get the OEM shipping hooks inserts easy trailer tie down locations 😂

Use the M5 floor pan. Good content and much more OEM/satisfying in the end. You spent 400 on a plastic piece to make it right, make the trunk right 😆

You guys ever consider maybe 3D printing hard to get parts like that engine firewall plastic?

Guys you should do actual 10k sedan challenge mods included with commercial prices, and then series of challenges with those cars.

I’d rather see you guys cut up the oem m5 exhaust and flow just the single muffler to the side with the exhaust provision on the wagon instead of trying to cut up the rear end and run both. It’ll keep this build and chassis minty clean.

cut the back of sedan off then start drilling the spot welds for the trunk floor.

With $6k budget you could have bought two 335i...or so you've claimed lol.

That block off plate install seems like just an "average" difficulty job, when compared to some jobs of replacing parts on aircraft. Any AME would back me up, I'm sure.

The $6k challenge I thought always referred to cost of the base vehicle. Then you guys did as all good enthusiasts do and dropped 3-4 times the cost of the vehicle in modifications. Seems pretty on point with what most of us do with our projects, just maybe a bit more expedited.

Not trying to ruffle feathers, just some feedback: *it still feels like kind of a cop-out about the "challenge" referring to the purchase price.* And it goes beyond semantics... if your overall project budget for a build is $250k (for example), what difference does it make if the base car cost $3k or $10k or $20k? I think the reason people have a problem with the name is that _it's not a "challenge" to buy a car for $6K_ when there's no real cap on the budget (from our perspective). With a limited budget, finding the best car for the cheapest amount _is_ actually a big consideration. With that in mind, why not something framed as a "$25k Challenge"? Sell off parts to free up cash, modify whatever you want, but keep it under $25k. Judge the completed cars on "real world" performance: 0-60, 1/4, but also highway cruising comfort, interior decibel level, take them to a Cars & Coffee and have people vote on aesthetics, etc. I feel like that's a more realistic representation of what most people's "project cars" end up becoming (over a much longer timeframe) and more analogous to the real-world challenge of trying to build something cool without having bottomless pockets.

Hey PT and JP you need not explain. It seems kinda obvious...what car can you buy with 6k. And then after that here is the potential of a 6k car. Great series. Have to agree with with JP thought, those LS lights are way better. Quality over Quantity 🤣🤙🏻

You strategized and executed the $6k challenge correctly. Almost every one of those folks commenting are (let's face it) just operating on troll logic. This is honestly my favorite series you guys have done so far! Plus you've really been consistent with the upload cadence; helps to stay engaged! Also, Pete just keeps getting crapped on by the BMW...I would have never made it past the hatch hydraulics *shutters*

When opening the headlights of the facelifted model, there are a lot of "since you're in there"s that you can/should do. The adjusters, and clear covers is one of them (by the way, buy the ABS plastic adjusters, and avoid PLC plastic at all cost, because it'll just fall apart. I believe there's also metallic adjusters for these headlights, but i'm not sure if they're a good idea). Since the headlight came from a high miler car, the chrome coating on the inside of the projectors is probably quite degraded, and that'll usually affect (a lot) the illumination capability of the headlight. Since you're trying to improve the car, consider replacing the projectors with Hella EvoX-R bi-xenon projectors. The lighting output will be A LOT better.. Also, remember to apply some ceramic coating on the clear covers, inside and outside... they'll not last as much as the Hella original covers, but I believe that'll help them last a bit longer. Regarding the mounting of the rear muffler on the passenger side, I believe that you'll need to move the battery of the car to the center of the floor pan (like in the M5). With the battery in the factory position you'll struggle to mount the muffler, without hacking it to pieces. It'll be a lot of metal work for that one, but if you really want quad tailpipes, that's the way to go. having a muffler on one side, and straight pipe on the other is very sketchy....

Run both pipes into a single Dinan muffler if you don't want to replace the floor.

The car purchase is always the base budjet, car guys will always mod their cars no matter what they start with. Some cars will need a little more effort and leftover budjet though. Car complexity, parts availability and price are things to consider before engaging in a build. I think the M5 project isnt for a beginner, it needs much planning ahead and really is a project. The lexus could be a daily driver that you mod and fix on week-ends and mostly never be down.

You guys are the best channel. The decision you make are great moving the channel forward. You guys deserve more subs and views

If your going to cut the trunk floor and put a new piece in then you might as well use the sedan trunk floor section and save a huge amount of fabrication.

Why not forget about that muffler and do a custom straight pipe only with a resonator on the right side and use those tips. So from the outside it will look legit and you wont need to cut anything.

Just cap off the right exhaust. Problem solved 👍

Making my day with this :) Both me and a friend have 3 series tourings, one is a E46 330i about to have it's engine overhauled , and a E36 with the LS1 swap.

"This is not good" seems to be a recurring theme around this BMW.

I don’t care how much you guys spent on these. Could you go buy (insert generic tuner car name here) that is newer, faster, and less problematic for the same amount for the same money? Sure. Could I go buy a coffee table at IKEA instead of hand making my own? Sure. The comment section can take a break. Car culture Is about building a something unique that reflects your personality and character, and showcases your pursuit for excellence. That’s why I’m watching Speed Academy and not one of the thousands of other channels that are rebuilding wrecked supercars.

Hey guys, just wanted to give you a big compliment. The videos are great and fun to watch and you know what they say, so many people, so many opinions. The things that are shown on many RU-vid channels cant be compared to what happens at home in peoples garages. When building a project car within a very short time we would all need to win the lottery or have a ton of sponsors (and no daytime jobs!). So you guys are just showing what is out there and providing ideas. Keep on doing the good stuff and good luck!

Jacking pads and hood struts is what defines a good car

Grab a Corsa muffler. Two in, two out. Route the passenger side to the driver side and save yourself time. If you're going to cut the pan, just do a full swap.

I had a “sock” from dinan that they used on my e36 cold air intake. I’m surprised they didn’t use the same for the m5 🤷🏼‍♂️

Should’ve just put an after market high flow single exit exhaust. Cutting out that section will be a mini headache.. for the least amount of work, cut the section from both cars and swap, instead of doing the whole tub

In regards to the rear, just look at it this way... mods required for the dual M5 exhaust in your wagon conversion will be child's play compared with what Motion Auto TV have just been through with their EVO wagon conversion lol 🤣😂🤣

Having a mk4 Supra, a Matrix and having owned an IS250awd i never had issues with the Toyota pinch welds like some of the other brands. My S2000 also has strong areas on the pinch welds that work well. Definitely had issues on older nissans with that. Surprised that an LS430 would not have properly supported pinch welds!

Timelapse was made for working on BMWs for all the pissing about on a seemingly simple job. Shonky materials are the absolute downfall of even modern beemers. It took me about 30 mins getting off one single 8mm bolt on my X5 😬 Keep up the great work fellas!

well, i have to adress something to all you bimmer hating comment section - a rust free e46 2,8 with buckets, sterring lock kit, hydro handbrake and other nice bits is around 3k where i am. While jdm carrs are a) rotten away b) cost as much as an e46 m3

The valuation difference between these two cars is gonna be insane. The m5 touring is gonna be worth 30k+, where as the Lexus maybe 10-12k. M5T are in high demand, which is why you should move the floor over.

Quick question to the people saying your air filters will get wet, WHERE DO YOU THINK CARS SUCK AIR FROM? Literally every car draws air from the wheel well or front grille somewhere and suck water in. That's why there's a drain hole in thr bottom of the air box.

I love this episodes, it just shows how much the bmw sucks to work on. Wonder why the fermans have those pads???? Because you have to work on them ALL THE DAMN TIME! Pinch welds? No biggie, slot a hocky puck. Yall from Canada jump on that.

+1 for swapping the sedan floor. Puts everything where its supposed to be. No ‘hacking’ required, just (HA! Just....) drill out the spot welds, separate the seam sealer (both cars), clean the wagon one, and put it it. Spare tire well, etc, will remain. Notching through the wagon one will be MORE work....

What I've learned from this build so far....don't buy a 15+ year old BMW, unless you plan on replacing EVERYTHING. Buy a Toyota instead
