M6 Grancoupe is the best BMW line up so far. should be a flagship, shifting the 7 series, BMW isn't suitable for making cars that pamper rear passengers.
I'm an AMG man but even I think the SL's headlights basically killed the whole front end. Its too fuzzy and it looks like a mess. BMW M6 is a much prettier car here.
Conclusion: SL is lighter, faster, stiffer than the M6 yet the roof comes off. M6 pumps fake engine noise into the cabin, SL does not. But the M6 looks better and while the SL may be better on paper, there is something about the M6 that makes Chris take it over the SL. Fine.
Max the Maltese dog m6 grancoup is better than any mb ever built!! But mb overall is the far more superior car brand. It’s just too many models and mor elegant.
adam jansson if the comparison is not fair, and with whom M6 compared?. S class coupe? lmao.. think! their prices are similar. in this case sl63 is more expensive than M6.
yes of course a cab is always a bit more expensive. MERCEDES DOSE NOT HAVE A DIRECT COMPETITOR IN THE SAME MANNER AS BMW DOES NOT HAVE A COMPETITOR TO THE SL
What can I say, Chris? You present such a classy review, and command the cars in such a competent way. I so enjoy your reviews, and don't know who out there does a more polished job. Awesome stuff. Thanks.
I'm quite a big BMW fan, but after this video, if given the choice, I will probably get the SL63. The M6 looks better on the outside, but I think the biggest selling point is the SL's hardtop convertible function- it drives like a coupe with it up, yet you've the option to turn it into the ultimate roadster. The interior of the SL63 also looks really expensive and modern. Nice job with the SL.
As always, Chris Harris on cars............Brilliant. Good cars, great shots of the cars and very interesting in depth reviews! Something extra special in this video was the music. Made me think of the film "Drive".
Having owned both these models, I have to say the BMW was the better looking of the 2 but the SL is 10x's more refined, but resale value, the M6 is a car not many people want to buy and depreciation is horrific... Glad I got rid of the M6 and kept the SL63...
while I'm a total bmw fan I wouldn't give the m6 a second thought. SL all day for me. The M6 is missing the essense imo. how can something with M pedigree weigh over 2 tons. SL meanwhile isn't trying to have pedigree its just classic Mercedes. Oh and I love the SL, look especially in black
2008 M6 Coupes with 20-30k miles are being sold in the US for 45-50 grand. Granted, upkeep of the car is still expensive, but that is a very low buy-in price for a car of this caliber.
Here in the future (2020) there is a black/ivory interior 2007 M6 convertible w/ 72,000 miles for sale by owner near me in the US for $14kUSD that needs trans work. It’s either the SMG motor, pump, clutch, or all three that are bad. Repair cost range: I think I could get out for no more than $10kUSD, maybe as low as $5kUSD. Outside of that, said to run great and looks beautiful. I am tempted to offer $8k. There is also a white 2007 convertible for sale by a used car dealership near me with 75,000 miles for $20kUSD with no reported issues. We currently own three 2001 BMWs, two E38s and an E46, so I am just crazy enough to buy an M6 convertible. I have taken one of my E38s on not one but two 2000 mile trips just within the past six months. I have the best BMW mechanic, at least for 15-25 year-old BMWs, in the country.
Another great review by your team - C.Harris is he man! Myself I have an M5 in 6MT and had I know they were coming out with the M6 in MT I would have definitely waited and picked one up! Take care.
I love how Chris makes it sound like the M6 is almost aspiring to be like the GTR. You would think it'd be the other way around, but then again, Nissan built one hell of a car...
In my eyes, id rather go for older SL and M6 than these. Im sorry, but Merc and BMW made a wrong step. Merc doesnt look good and electric steereing is wrong step. BMW has not that good engine like it use to have. Sorry guys, but id take the older models all the way.
This video was one of my favourites when it came out, and funny enough, I changed from my BMW M6 to a Mercedes SL65 last year. Great reminder from the algorithm.
SL is ugly as sin but sounds gorgeous, a little too much torque to balance the ride on the road though, I would choose the M6 as well, and considering it's £40k less, makes much more sense, still, I'd love that SL engine, lovely.
There's just something wrong recently with M cars, maybe they're targeted to much at the upper management, the M spirit is being slowly drained out of them.
I feel you on that they're forgetting that the M cars are about performance they're trying to make a pleasurable luxury race car and its contradicting everything in terms of performance and ride quality. M is for speed performance and handling not comfort.
I loved the older older generation SL, especially The Black series. But, the new SL is horrible, Benz is taking away each car's looks away from it. The New S class and C-class are so similar in style, the same with the CLA and CLS. I understand they are trying to make the baby version of the cars, but If I was a S class or CLS owner I would be pissed. Also, I think the headlights that they are using are way too big, they have too many parts that aren't used well. Especially on the S-class, it looks like bee eyes, or a someone who is wearing very thick glasses. Idk, just doesn't look good.
Damn... would be nice if once in a while you showed a few behind the scenes videos. The cinematography in this one is exceptionally good and I'd love to learn how to do it. Especially the interior angle is one of the best I've seen in car reviews so far.
Great episode. It would be nice to see those cars and how dirty they are after a sessions with Mr. Harris cleaned up properly by the gentlemen on Drive Clean. A true soup to nuts episode. Thanks again, Mr. Harris.
Basically, the SL feels more rigid than the M6, is faster in a straight line, you can put the roof down, the motor sounds amazing, it feels more nimble and agile, is more silent.. I've seen a lot of other reviews on youtube by respectable car journalists who say the new M6 is quite disappointing for an M car. But Chris prefers the M6 because it looks a bit better and has a better throttle response .. I feel M. Harris is a little biased towards BMW.
Yeah, but that the M6 costs 30 thousand euros less, doesnt matter for some reason. Clearly the M6 wins just by the stupid price comparison. Additionally, maybe you didnt listen to what he said about the M6, but he did mention a lot of things he likes about the car.
I don't think it's quite that cut and dry. The closing statement to me made me believe that he thinks the SL63 was indeed the objectively superior car.
Volkswagen is over rated. They make nice things and all, but they just don't have that desirable image. But if we wanted to go into coupes and sedans and such now, screw the slk, I'll take a c63 507 wagon. Or a CLS63 wagon. Hell. I'd love a w123 turbo diesel wagon too.
Can’t believe that 6 series platform has been around for 10 years now. Still looks modern and tech is still pretty good! SL has a small infotainment screen, old style cluster, it’s the gangster grandpa and the m6 is the single father in his 30s early 40s.
M6 is a far better car. It beat this SL63 AMG on tracks and on straight line. The M6 Competition pack (not the one in this vid) actually beat SLS black from 0-300 km/h. Not to mention the M6 weight more than a Lexus RCF. What a wonderful all mighty ///M car!
LAUNCH CONTROL 東瀛戰神 M6 is too much underrated. :) BMW claim ~560hp at the crank, but it's way higher than that (I've read somewhere that dyno showed 630 hp at the crank, so yeah)
There was some kind of article about extensive testing of M6. BTW, I've never seen stock M6 doing 0-300 in less than 30 seconds. SL63 AMG is capable of doing that. I'm not a fanboy, I'm just frustrated by how much manufacturers underclaim their power figures. I'm sure the Merc is also somewhat underrated, since it's crazy to do such numbers while weighting over 4000 lbs.
I think the SL looks better in my opinion, I saw an M6 up close once and its cool and all but still looks like every other BMW. The SL is special and looks amazing and doesn't look like every other Mercedes
The SL looks like a smaller version of the cl to me, while exactly the 6 and 7 series from BMW are really different than the other BMWs, the others, 3,4,5, look way to similar, but the 6 really looks different.
I don't hate BMW's but they just all look the same for the most part... (I am glad they are bringing the z4 back tho). AMG sounds and looks better in my opinion.
Kobe B, you think like me. I hate top gear "reviews", because they never talk about cars in details and use to much crappy british humor. In every episode they have to play, crash, make fun or insult manufacturers that didn't like them. Real car lovers will never make fun of the car and will never crash them on purpose. Top Gear is for those with low IQ and no interest in cars.
I love the AMG 63. Aggressive yet with elegant Merc badge. But the M6 is an all rounder. I'd get the grand coupe as it can do it all. Space, sporty luxury, superb engine, stylish with clean lines and a suave look makes it more appealing. The met metallic amg is a bit aggressive and a elegant merino blue m6 is already a beauty enough. Price is also slightly lower than the Amg.
When you hear it form the outside, the fake sound through the speakers is irrelevant. BMW Ms have always had a more nervous, racecar-ish like sound while the AMGs lean towards a more deep bass-like grunt. To each their own. I personally prefer the Ms.
BMW over Mercedes anyday! Any BMW is better looking than any Mercedes by far. And, BMW's are faster and handle better. Mercedes are too feminine looking and have always been unattractive vehicle's. So what if Mercedes makes their V8's sound louder than the BMW V8's. BMW makes their V8's sound quieter on purpose because BMW's are Stoic vehicle's. Stoic = Not caring what other's think and prefer to be more subtle.
So the last generation c63 black or 507 estate are feminine? You must be blind. Bimmers are purchased by children who don't know how to drive properly. M is a similar story but with a twist: They've given in. They're using i6s again instead of v8s. Though that doesn't mean they're bad cars. But AMG is more dramatic, better looking, and overall my pick. But I wouldn't ignore a M.
