Calling all BMW fanboys & fangirls, this one’s for you!
We’ve got our hands on the all-new M5 CS, and it’s going head-to-head against the M8 Gran Coupe and an M5 Competition!
Now although they’re three different cars, they actually have relatively similar stats. You see, all three are powered by the same 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8. However, while the M8 & M5 Competition have the same power output (625hp & 750Nm), the m5 CS has been slightly increased to 635hp!
When it comes to weight, there are also a few differences to be found. The M8 is the heaviest here, at 1980kg, while the M5 CS is the lightest, at 1,825kg. The regular M5 Comp splits the two, at 1895kg.
So what do you think, will the lightweight M5 CS win all challenges? There’s only one way to find out - LET’S RACE!

There is something wrong with that M5 comp. It’s definitely under performing, which is proven by its 1/4 mile time compared to every other comp recorded.

Could it be that the owner put in 95 octane instead of 98? Rolling races it was nowhere to be seen.The difference was too big considering the small difference in horsepower and/or weight I think.

That would only be the e63 and f12 since the m6 is built since 2005. There was a e24 before 2005 but as a 635 csi and not m6. These cars are no competition for the m8 at all. The m8 is way too powerful

Btw the e24 most definitely had an M6 model. I’ve got the 1987 Car & Driver issue with it on the cover.

My stage 1 F90 is just a bit quicker to 200 km/h than a CS but 200 km/h + my 735 hp / 980 nm walks away quickly (all dragy performance meter measured )

The launch control of the M5 has failed several times in the past. It can run an 11.1 if it works, but mid to high 12's if/when it doesn't.

Although BMW states top speed is limited at 155, from what I’ve seen competition models are limited a bit higher. My F80 M3 (w/ comp pack) was able to hit 167 stock! That might be why that m8 comp is limited around 164… and he definitely got juked from his dealer 😢

It's not. Just buy a comp pack and slap a bootmod 3 tune on it. Way cheaper and a lot faster than a stock CS. And if you tune the CS you just get the same power as the competition tuned.

@@gmain1977 They all do it, but BMW we’re even trying to make customers pay a subscription to have Apple Car Play! They soon stopped as it didn’t go down too well. BMW want to include all features in every car they make and then charge you subscriptions or an extra cost to ‘unlock’ the features. Pure rip off really. I wonder how many customers they sell the upgraded max speed to but don’t actually do it? Because not many will actually test it.

@@VaunShiz .2 seconds is not really margin of error territory here. The M5C has been on Carwow many times and never cracked 10s on the runway. If you look at the track on this video it’s also a bit wet and the M5CS ran a 10.9. It’s clearly a good deal quicker.

I mean, if you were to drag race every single variant of the 5 Series, we all know which would win, but wouldn't it be cool to see how close say 550i and 545e are to the stock M5 or 530d vs. 530i. Line 'em all up. All (hold please 1, 2, 3) TWELVE? There's twelve? Thirteen if you count the Alpina? Whatever. Anyway you could do this with 3 Series, E Class, A6/S6/RS6 range, Golf, etc.... DO IT!

I agree that is a huge difference and something we can't look over. There is nothing the driver can do here to make the difference this big except lift off the throttle the car has programmed launch control and should be quite consistent.

I think it’s best to have someone fire blanks or set a fire cracker off before the races begin to scare away birds on the runway. That way it’ll save both the cars and wildlife as it isn’t the first time this kind of accident had occurred. Huge fan of carwow for many years and would love to see no animals harmed during the shoot . 🙏

When the M5 Competition launches well, it does the quarter mile in 11.1s, when compared to the M5 CS time of 10.9s, it isn't that big of a difference for $40K more. But the M5 Comps are notorious for bogging down and not launching properly, hope the M5 CS doesn't have the same problem.

M5CS runs 10.6 or 10.7 1/4mile in good conditions. There are several tests. It's much faster than M5 Comp.

Definitely something wrong with the M5 Comp. In terms of power to weight it should still be on the heals of the other two at the 1/4 mile but it looked as though the brakes were on. Either that or the M8 and the CS were actually putting out 750HP

Us car fans are currently being treated to the most beautiful, fast, tech savvy, and capable vehicles as a whole then at any other time is history. Yes prices have gone up across the board but vehicle manufacturers have never invested the amount of high end materials in both interior and exterior parts like they currently are. Domestic, import and European vehicles are all so amazing right now.

Thanks for the video Matt, been waiting a long time for this. Disappointed with the Comps results, something is amiss with that car, nearly 13 secs for the 1/4, thats the worst ive ever seen by some margin. I also think the top speed is reached in 7th gear on these cars ?, so that may be the problem you encountered in the M8 ?.

It's not that, the standard M5 and M5 Competition just have very inconsistent launch control. They've had issues in other CarWow drag races too, that pre-date the CS.

@@siraff4461 Afaik the CS doesn't have the same launch inconsistency, but also the CS is only marginally more powerful, and fractionally lighter. At these levels there's always diminishing returns due to drag etc. That £40k isn't necessarily just performance, but experience, eg the dampers, brakes, handling, feedback, response etc. Reckon you'd see more of a difference on a track than you would a 1/4 run.

@@nib95 BMW have a massive R&D budget. If I can take an M5 to a tuner and get ~80hp for under a grand I would expect a lot more as part of a £40k package. I agree at some point there are diminishing returns but this is nowhere near the cutting edge and there is still plenty on the table - again the aftermarket has seen multiple cars running over 800hp with relatively minor mods. I'm not saying thats reasonable for a warranty-able road car but these things are putting numbers on dynos which are within a few % of the standard older car. You may well see more difference on a track but then looking at some of the lap times posted so far for the CS and some of the older cars with equivalent rubber it comes down to differences so marginal they could be error - though the CS does tend to always hold that tiny advantage. I could be wrong but I'm seeing a lot of cynical marketing and not a lot of extra go. Lets be honest though - the M5 isn't exactly slow anyway so if they can cream off a bit more money for a very similar car why not?
