BMW N63 engine valve stem seals replacement 

I was thinking of doing this myself. Thank you for disabusing me of that notion.

Well ladies and gentlemen I got parts ordered from fcp euro 2013 550i rear wheel drive. I started taking stuff off today. I will keep coming back to update as I go I hope my experience will help someone else. This video has been great 👍🏻 Well for starters make sure you have various different internal and external torx sockets. Inter coolers have three bolts one on top two on bottom. On each side bottom bolts are almost invisible. You have to look for them. Cooling fan you have three self tapping screws. Two on top one on inside on front of bank one. One harness than just pull up. Draining coolant driver side all the way on the bottom disconnect quick connect than drain. Stay tuned for next update and pray for me😂 2nd day I started unhooking bank two from all electrical harnesses it’s easy but take your time all plastic is brittle it like to brake. Bank one was pain in the a$$ before I left my car on ramps due to car being too low so it’s easier on my back. Start taking off all plastics under the car. Unhook harness from transmission and oil level sensor. Now you look up you can see oil cooler lines going to oil pan 13mm bolt take it off so you can slide harness up. Now hard part you have one more harness on starter you must unhook spray some WD40 on harness so it comes off easily you must press and pull. You are limited on space keep fighting you will get it. You have one more bolt you can get it from top it’s I think 10mm holding harness. Take it off and you are free to pull up whole harness. You must take out DME on bank one When you look down on right dude you will see black (ground wire held by 10mm bolt) take it out on hook cooler lines. You are home free bank one and bank two are good. Now you can start taking out fuel injectors. Third day all parts arrived from @fcpeuro.com arrived I was missing two bolts for my cam timing. Master tools set ordered from eBay 14 day rental. Bank two took valve cover off it was stuck it took some fight but got it off. I notice on bank 2 banks frint cover you have one 8mm etorx you can’t get it off because you have water pump aluminum hose close buy. You must buy 8mm etorx wrench you can get it from Amazon. I took fuel injectors out no issues night before I spray some WD40 they come out no problem. Same for fuel lines I had no issues with AGA tools 14mm and 17mm special flexing tool took it right off. Make sure you mark all your lines with painters tape and make sure you mark your fuel injectors THEY MUST GO BACK IN SAME CYLINDER. Back at it again Today I finally started valve seal replacement bank one is done. Make sure you read instructions when you buy or rent AGA tools. Watch and study This video and AGA all videos watch it multiple times. You must have good lights I had one of them helicopter light bulbs hanging down from my hood and one more work shop light pointing down. I also had head light hand light mirrors. Make sure you have two magnets One bigger magnet that flexes 2nd magnet buy one from Harbor Freight it’s small it looks like radio antenna. Buy mirror that flexes I bought my from harbor freight. Take your time when you just start. Each valve you do you get better by the time you get to the cylinder four 😣 you will be pro. Do not give up on cylinder 4 intake valve it’s durable. Just take your time. Go easy watch it pay attention do not push valve down with spring. I bough leak down tester from harbor freight Maddox $79.99 it works like charm. Keep your pressure 60psi. DO NOT SET PRESSURE TO 60PSI THAN PLUG IN HOSE TO YOUR CYLINDER. your engine will jerk if you do that. Plug in your hose to leak down tester hook it up to spark plug hole and start adjusting your gauge slowly up to 60psi. Today I started on bank 2 On my engine I had to remove throttle body in order to take bolt from intake cam. I almost drop valve when I was doing cylinder 8 I forgot to plug in my leak down tester. By power of god and higher power my valve was saved. Make sure you always have magnet by you just in case if you do something stupid like I did. All 32 valves seals are replaced at this point engine is timed chain is tensioned. Bank two is pain in the a$$ to tension the chain because how tensioner is positioned. Make sure when you start to install tensioner put some towels down by front cover at this point you don’t want to drop bolt down. BE CAREFUL. Last day everything went smooth take your time when timing your car. You will need BMW ista or something equivalent to ista after everything is done more than likely you bill have to reset Vanos adoptions or your check engine light will stay on. Make sure your cam shaft sensors are plugged in and every other sensor. Take pictures and videos before you start taking wires and hoses off so you can make sense how to putt it back together. read this it’s probably one of most important things ON BANK 1 in between cylinder #3 and 4 on coil harness there is I think 5mm Allen bolt that bolt is ground bolt for DME same for bank #2 in between seven or 7 and 8 same 5mm Allen bolt on coil harness if you don’t put these bolts back or if there not tight enough on harness YOU WILL BURN YOUR “DME” that’s at least $1000 fu(up. Almost forgot you must prime your engine with oil do not just start. Pull up on your back seat on passenger side you will see cover with five 10mm bolts take it off unplug your fuel pump. Prime your engine at least 3 times for 10 sec. Plug your fuel pump back in you are ready to start your engine. You did take off all of your tools and check everything twice 😅. Good luck let me know if you have any gyrations. Do not attempt this, unless you know what you’re doing. Or you did your homework and you are sure so many things can go wrong. Best of luck 👍🏻🇺🇸

Since my post my dealer discovered my 09 750Li needs the valve stem guide job done (No cost to me). It's been there 10 days and I don't care how long they keep it, as long as it's fixed properly.

This job pays good money to do 👍. Done it several times already . First time will be intimidating but after that it’s easy .

Good job on this video. Just performed this job myself but removed the whole engine and transmission assy from vehicle to perform the job.

Just came across your video looking for my engine. First off, thanks for the video really appreciate it, if I could make a suggestion in the future that I think will really help the channel. Fast-forwarding of the video is okay but primarily I would suggest you playing at regular speed with you talking throughout that way people can understand exactly what you're doing you can always have a secondary link if somebody wants to fast forward and speed through with music. I think for most users though keep the music off and let people know what you're doing all of the way through as this will help them with their engines. Unfortunately, I can't use this video to help me with my engine because of all of the fast forwarding and no narration. But I do appreciate the video thank you.

BMWNA approved repairs on my 2011 550i they extended the warranty to 131k for valve seals and are also replacing my Turbos because the oil soot damaged them as well as catalytic converters. also getting the recalls done, fuel pump replacement and aux electric turbo cooler.

How many hour does it takes to do this job??

Did the bmw still burn oil after this job? My bmw does blow white smoke after a couple minutes idling, also burning 1 quart every 700 miles. Reason I ask is because if after this job it will still burn oil I rather just leave it as is and assume the cost of stacking up on oil rather than spend the $4500 for the seal replacement.

I have a 2011 X5 50i with 73k miles, I don't have any smoke from exhaust, but recently developed burnt oil smell through vents in cabin. My dad is a retired mechanic, he looked and said he can see some oil on passenger side valve cover, he thinks we can do this ourselves. Does anybody have any suggestions on doing this, I can't find any diy online for this, he doesn't think it'll be that bad, just time consuming. Thanks in advance for any help.

Public Service Announcement: If you own a N63 Motor, do yourself a favor (unless you have already done this) Take your car to the dealership, and have them run an Oil Consumption test. Mine just failed, and they are replacing the Valve Stems/ Valve Guides for free. They got sued over this. Save yourself some money. (Plus they give you a new loaner car for free while you wait)

Wow I sat here and watched this whole process I can't imagine how long it took in real life.... I definitely don't want to do this myself sucks that I probably have to pay somebody... Even though I am mechanically inclined I don't have the tools for sure

I have a 2016 650I and I have done minor engine work and all the plastic breaks! I feel if I were to attempt an engine major repair as such, I would just pull the engine and do a whole rebuild! Everything is going to break anyways!

Looks like a simple, straight-forward fix...

It's much easier if you have a hoist and engine table to pull it all out the bottom and not be leaning over the car. But now its covered by BMW anyway so let them do it.

I changed the injectors on my n63 and it took me a whole day to do I was thinking of doing this or at least the valve cover gasket but valve stem seal looks like a massive pain in the ass😅

I think filming this job was for himself as the refit would be incredibly complex and you’d need to refer back to the video constantly. I’m currently looking for quotes in Melbourne

What a job. Typical BMW...little effort or thought going to making something reliable or have a chance to last. Each version has something that needs to be addressed...then another weak point pops up. How about instead of crappy Viton valve stems seals..go with Teflon based seal on such an important part? . At least it not the rod bearing that fail like on their V-10.....lol. Wouldn't you like to have a factory option....a Viton valve stem as std...or pay $400 for a Teflon based seal... I do like picking up bargains....or nightmares....a 550.new in 2012 for $76K going for $5k....102K miles...

If i want to put a seafoam for the valve cleaning carbon build up on the back where should i apply it? Same engine 4.4L twinturbo can you please let me know .🙏👍😷

Too bad you are in California, I am looking for someone in New Jersey to do mine, what price range do you think I should expect? 2200-2500? I called shop in New Jersey they told me $5,000, I understand it's time consuming but who the heck would put 5k into BMW e70 repair knowing that next month will be another problem and another, never ending story.

Why does BMW keep building these fucken cars with this failure of an engine since 2006??? You would think they would have gotten the fucken point since then that this engine model fails and still never did anything to improve nor fix the design failure so this will never happen for the life of the car! Japanese must be laughing at the German's gimmicks!

Hi TKR I finally bought a new N63 engine! I plan on also replacing my injectors to index 12 what do you think? And also I heard of the 90 degree thermostat to keep the engine cooler what do you think about that?

Might want to add you NEED a CROW FOOT or 90 degree 9/16(ish) wrench.

I dropped my 09 X6 N63 engine at dealer for the valve seal replacement under the CCP program( no cost). It’s been there for 10 days. I’m so pissed, thinking about getting a lawyer if the problem “oil consumption still high” don’t get solved

I've done many of these N63s.. it's one hell of a Job, this is why you get them for pennies on the dollor.. No one will pay they just get rid of the things..

Guys, don't waste you time or money on this repair. Just swap a LS engine in and drive it for 400k with no issues. That is, if you can't separate with it. This car is great in sooo many ways, and awful in sooo many ways.

Hi T K-R ! My BMW X6 50i has a code '' 2EA9 Turbocharger auxiliary water pump control line, electrical ''..... i had replace this pump, but still have the code.... i check electrical cable to dme and connections it's OK. Is there a fuse or relay I need to check ?

Shoot. I just found a broken PCV line while I was replacing the intercoolers on my N63. After watching this vid- is seems like I should replace the valve stem seals “while I’m in there” because… 130k mi on the odometer. I love this video. It gives me some confidence to get after the valve stem seals. I also hate this video because it gives me some confidence to replace the valve stem seals. I had no intention of pulling either the PCV nor the valve covers. After watching this- the correct approach is to do all of the maintenance tasks. Thank you OP for posting all of the tools in the captioning.

So was this motor burning excessive oil out of the tailpipe? Or was this just done due to age of the seals. Thanks!
