BMW R nineT Urban GS First Ride Review
www.revzilla.com/common-tread...
Some bikes are measured by spec sheets, others by the amount of thumbs ups and eyebrow raises they elicit from car-confined motorists at stoplights. While the BMW R nineT Urban GS won’t blow you away with the former, when it comes to the latter, it more than makes its mark. If you are looking for the fastest bike in the world, or the lightest, or the most off-road equipped, the BMW R nineT Urban GS probably isn’t for you. However, if you are looking for the maximization of the all-important metric of “smiles per hour,” Lemmy spends this First Ride explaining why this might just be the bike for you.

Hey you got a subscriber here working in the factory in Berlin. While working in the assembly line all day long can be really exhausting, it makes us happy to hear that people enjoy the quality we produce. What other subs commenting here dont understand is that by looking for "young customers" we arent talking about 18 ish year olds. More like 20-30 year olds which I think they will be able to afford.

I will buy this. Can’t tell you how much I’ve been wanting a basic BMW R GS that wasn’t gargantuan. I loved the ‘80s R bikes. I’m tired of all the modern electronics and stuff. Give me the old Reynolds luggage rack and cases and cylinder guards and I’m off on a long tour. Rode ‘83_’84 R65 coast to coast and bottom of Death Valley to top of Pike’s peak camping the whole way. 1000 Mile plus days when I had too. The early ‘80’s R 80 GS was just an awesome bike.

I’m 52 and drove KZ1100s, a Nighthawk 750, Suzuki GS 750 in my youth...and I LOVE THIS BIKE. I’m an old man and going 16O mph on the Gulf Freeway to Galveston from NASA in 9 minutes Isnt what I have in mind. It’s beautiful. Little soft going to neutral or first without a little RPMs at a stop. I’m in central Texas now, and it’s PERFECT to explore the obscure river access to find the private clear water of the Blanco river with my latest lady friend. Half my age nearly and stick of dynamite. Life is GOOD.

I went from 1200GS to R1250RS to Urban G/S. The GS was great but over 20,000 miles and I never went offroad, what's the point? But I still loved the boxer engine and so I switched to the 1250RS. That bike is perfect... too perfect. I felt like I was riding a giant scooter - too refined, too easy. I test rode a RnineT Pure and loved it, but I wasn't sure yet. At that point BMW had stopped selling the Urban G/S in the USA. Some months later a Urban G/S 40th anniversary appeared at the dealer and I bought it immediately even though my first though on seeing it was that it looked like a toy. But it's been love ever since...

Personally when I compare this bike to ANY of the premium brand bikes and specifically a Harley Davidson Sportster 1200 I think this bike is a bargain. Thank you BMW. I like anything with two wheels. Hadn’t owned a new bike in years and recently stepped into a BMW dealership for the first time in August. Very impressed with the fit and finish and no pressure approach. If you haven’t considered a BMW go see one for yourself.

Hello Mr Lemmy!, Thanks for the review. I've been currently on the market for a bike, mostly a GS...but what caught my eye was I can practically get a later-model r9t (i.e.: 2016-2018) for a 2009 - 2012 GSs would cost. In other words, late model r9t vs pre-teen GS. Decisions, decisions. :-/ What is holding me back - and here's where you chime in - would be:... 1) it's excellent for solo riding, how comfortable would my gf riding rear-seater be? 2) OEM saddle bags that would complement the r9t GS or any of the other r9t flavors? I've seen Wunderlich does offer some. 3) any larger fuel tanks like a 7.9glln (30L) or 8.7glln (33L) than the standard 5.3glln (20L)? A tank that can take me further... 4) did you drop something, like a GoPro, at min 7? 5) and lastly, I might have to buy a GS and an r9t. Thanks again!

If BMW really wanted younger customers they would revive the G650 XChallenge and g450x, also in supermoto trim.. I have the 650 xChallenge and this thing is stupid fun everywhere, in the city, in the mud and on the highway, light but enough power to do anything. And you need not worry about those shiny parts :D

Here is my theory behind the succes of this bike: except the styling and the heritage that are obvious there is another factor which is utility! We all know that people who buy big advs use them 95% of the time on cities and whe they go off road it's just a long easy trail. The urban g/s can take you on a trail/route trip confortably and it's gonna make you smile thanks to that engine. Also it's a very modification friendly bike which you can tweak and make personnal..

Where is this thing produced, is it coming out of their new plant in Brazil? Either way seems like a bit much for so l little bike. Might as well drop another grand and buy something like the Honda Africa Twin if you want comfort while street riding but serious ability off road if you so choose.
@timothy9596
@timothy9596 6 лет назад
$13,000 for that? The industry is constantly asking what's wrong. "Why aren't people buying motorcycles?" Here's your answer. Bikes like this use to be a cheap alternative to buying and maintaining a car, and a hell of a lot more fun. That's why I bought my first street bike when I was 17. What 17 or 18 year old can afford this?
@threethrushes
@threethrushes 6 лет назад
BMW is not targeting teenagers with this bike. It is an aspirational brand, and my guess is that the buyer of this will be aged between 29-45, who has 15 grand burning a hole in his pocket.
@alwaysbeshooting8841
@alwaysbeshooting8841 6 лет назад
The pricing of nearly all bikes has gone crazy. 250 dual sports are $6000-7000!!! This air cooled BMW looks like a fun bike but let's be real. It's a nearly five hundred pound air cooled standard bike. It should cost no more than 7grand.

Lot of dislikes here so just to even it out...I`ve ridden this urban GS and I have to say the looks kinda put me off but the dealer didn`t have the suave classic version as a demo. I`m not a die hard BMW fan and never owned one in the past, let alone a boxer engined one. So yeah, this GS has more going for it than it`s ugly duckling looks and the spec sheets might suggest. I loved the riding position and the overall size. Not huge like some adventure bikes, yet you are comfy and there`s a feeling you could still go around the world on it. This bike handles so sweet, the way it turns feels connected and intuitive. The throttle response is sooo sweet and direct at the initial opening, makes driving out the meaty low torque a real pleasure. Together with a soundtrack that is just on the heavy metal side of divine, loud but not too loud. Which sums the bike up really well, whoever screwed this thing together has nit the right balance between this and that. Suspension is the same, comfy but supporting the bike`s weight well and not wallowing, brakes feel strong and dependable. All in all a big surprise, still can`t get over the colour and the hooker lipstick red seat (bites the back of his hand) If I end up buying one I`ll either get used to it or have the bloody thing repainted !
@cubax599
@cubax599 6 лет назад
Oh and worth mentioning is the sweet gearbox, short throw and precise. Together with the great throttle, the upshifts feel smoother than a quickshifter(I rode it back to back with the new 1200RS) Only downside was the sometimes vague feeling upon getting into first from neutral. You don`t get any click or nothing but that`s how the dry clutch works. Odd.

Bmw urban gs and scrambler exhaust manifold "very low" , curved under bike , it can hit a small rock anytime which is coming from front wheel to get in trouble on semi off road !! also price is not for younger buyers, i think its for rich kids :( Anyway , i like your reviews and video quality!! and wish to see Thruxton R and Sportster 1200 roadster reviews too.

As a university student my first bike (Suzuki GSX 750) cost only around 1400 $ ... i already put 10k kilometers on it without a problem. When i finally earn better money, i wouldn't buy a BMW. I would buy a Honda or Suzuki, because i already had some dirt cheap, old bikes by those manufactures that still run good.
@cubax599
@cubax599 6 лет назад
So what, if you`ve had dirt cheap old BMWs in the past that still run good(like many people did) you`d be getting a new BMW when you have the money and saying other makes are rubbish :) It`s such a brainwash that one manufacturer is more reliable than another, entirely subjective. Just saying, so you don`t miss out on the r nine t series, they are sweet bikes.

The bikes you speak of are disposable bikes that people have no real love for and that's fine but traditional BMW riders want a bike to last many years. Do me a favor and see how many Japanese bikes (besides Goldwings) with more than 50,000 miles on them. you can find.You won't find many. Then see how many Japanese bikes with over 100,000 miles (besides Goldwings). They are practically non-existent. BMW's with over 100,000 or even 200,000 miles are quite common. See if you can get 100,000 miles out of your GSX750 and let me know how that goes. BMW's are made to last and are not disposable.

I've taken an older, larger 1150GS through the rockies on the exact same rubber and they worked great. Only place I'd feel sketch would be on wet mud in the forrest (was there too) or very loose dirt. Considering the same pair of tires rode me from SF to Maine (13,000 miles total) and to the Rockies riding on the journey back I'd say they're more than hardcore enough for anyone reading this.

Citizenthirteen not trying to convince you either :) Just saying, they are selling like hot cakes so many enjoy them. As for the maintenance, agreed its quite unacceptable for a 2018 model. Thats really the part of this engine I could go without, for the rest its one of the most fun bikes Ive owned and Ive owned quite a few from most brands.

A ridiculous statement. You obviously don't have any appreciation for the history of BMW motorcycles and if you think the 1200 air/oil cooled boxer lacks power you apparently haven't ridden any of the RnineT's. Why not change the BMW emblem design as well?

How does it feel on the open road on the highway? REPLY

Thank you Lemmy. Compared to the Ducati Scrambler or the Triumph Scrambler? I own a Scrambler Icon 2017 model and thinking of switching to the Urban G/S...

My two previous/first motorbikes were BMW (650cc and 800cc). The Ducati Scrambler is very agile nimble motorbike and urges you to ride it on the limit. It is a fun bike and it feels like a scooter in the city. It is nice for small trips 30-40 miles but wind is pretty annoying after 70-75 mph. The Scrambler is and feels tiny, only 189kg fuel ready...416lbs. the tank has about 12,5 liters capacity about 3 gallons if I am not mistaken. It is very easy to ride but I guess on the open road the Urban G/s with the iconic 1170 boxer beats it easily. My only hesitation is the weight of the URban G/s while standing. It is enormous compared to the Ducati. I am 5' 8'' and about 156lbs so the Urban G/s feels a bit big to me. I use the bike as my only transport vehicle...everyday commute to work and literally everywhere I go..

Which one would you suggest that could include everyday commuting but being able to ride on the highway, on b-roads, light off road and look and feel like retro?

What...exactly, do people think $13K USD is? What wierd Willy Wonka economy does anyone live in to think that's "young rider" money? I can kind of get it for motorrad bikes made in Germany, but it's not just BMW. More big name companies are making their bikes in India and Malaysia, but are charging more and more for bikes that cost them less and less to assemble. You know what young rider money is? It's either a $1500 craigslist beater with $250 in parts and some trial-and-error wrenching, or it's an R3 because that's all they can afford, unless Mommy & Daddy are paying for it out of the trust fund.

4c1dr3fl3x I don’t know about the US, but here in Europe they are typically always bought through their financing club. Most brands will have a ~€1.2k entry fee, and then you pay ~€150 a month all in. After three years you trade it in for a new one. So, manufacturers are taking advantage of that.

When is anything BMW produces cheap? Including bikes? Also I don't think its expensive either... Ducati desert scrambler a couple grand less... not nearly as good as the BMW... Let's not even mention the resale value if you ever decide to sell it .

Nothing quite so bland sounding in twin cylinder engines as a 360° firing order. Blaaaaaaaaah. "Glorious honk" indeed. Sounds like someone shoving a plastic spatula into a box fan. The engine is like a lead-filled Samsonite suitcase with two tree stumps glued to the sides. Triumph Scrambler for the win. Oh, and if you want to "GS" the dirt? Get some TKC80's on the V-Strom. Sounds better anyway.

BMW is weird sometimes. I would never ever buy a bike without a fuel gauge maybe not even one missing the rev counter. Shot themselves in the foot.
@HDB112
@HDB112 3 года назад
Well, it's not a big problem. I have a BMW F650CS, also without fuel gauge. But after a while you know where your limits are. Last time I refueled (warning light was on for some time) I fueled 11.5 litres. It has a 12 litre tank.
