As a former Harley and Indian owner, I love my current R18 B. I was concerned with the foot position, but it has turned out to be a non issue. I'm 5'10" and I run out of fuel before my legs cramp up. Personally, this checked all the boxes of what I was looking for. There were things about the Harley and Indian that drove me to BMW and I'm glad I made the switch. I feel like this bike is a great option for anyone who's not married to the big 2 of American style cruisers.

I tried hard to like it, but his comments are spot on, I can't get used to the lack of forward controls and the inability to move ones foot forward or move around on the boards. I think after a 3 hr ride you would be locked up. Sad deal as it is a nice bike with loads of tech, but the Moto Co has nothing to worry about, they have boards w/ forward controls.

I work at a multi brand dealership. Harley-Davidson, Ducati, and BMW. As such, I have had the opportunity to ride this bike back to back with numerous Harley products. It rides most like a 17 Dyna Street Bob, which has a similar riding position. I owned a Dyna Street Bob - bought it new, so that's not a dig. As you pointed out, relocation of the foot controls is a possibility on the HD, and being 6-4, I installed forward controls on mine. Not an option on the Bimmer, but with the weekender seat, or the BMW Roland Sands made seat, I am comfy enough for the kind of riding for which this bike was made. As a longtime Harley rider, I like it. It's a beautiful bike. Handles okay - on par with a Softail Fatboy or Slim, but not as well as a Fat Bob, Lowrider 114 or FXDR, but then, those are lighter, sportier bikes. Would I buy one? I love the BMW boxer, and the R18 is certainly cool and stands out on it's own. I like that it tries to be a cruiser in the BMW idiom and not just a Harley clone. I'd consider it if I were in tbe market, though I would also consider a Ducati Diavel 1260S. As for sales, it's doing okay, though the bagger versions are too new to say as of yet. They're unique bikes, and do pack a lot of tech.

It's great! There's nostalgia and artistic style combined, not to forget it's likely going to last for years due to it's quality build. The lack of leg room says I won't be buying one. I'm not Jay Leno so I won't be adding this to the collection.

HY there ! Just have ridden an R 18 .I have to desk are right away that I am a BMW fan.I own a 1200 GS adventure ,a R 65 turned into coffee racer .My wife owns a 1200 R .So maybe I am not biased free ..I am 1.88 height .I must say I felt pretty comftorble on the bike , I didn't missed the advenced footpads .This is not a long way cruiser because you don't have air protection .So. for short trips I think you won't get cramps .The bicycle is fantastic .I don.t feel the weight of the bike because the weight center is very low .Yhe engines fantastic .The gearbox-fantastic .Brakes -fantastic !Suspensions -fantastic .Looks ? Metal sculpture art .Reliability -will see. By the way ,I am gynecologist,so the comparison doesn't bother me :)

My Lowrider is nice, but the the mid controls are just a little too close for me for long rides and the forwards are too far away for my short inseam. But I am able to make a bracket to bring the forward pegs back a little to fit me perfectly. The R18 looks amazing and has some great features, but it look really cramped for my 29" inseam and I can't see where I can make for more leg room.
@navycrewbrother1

I really agree that the 180 deg Boxer configuration is the real head-scratcher here. If they had a configuration that allowed for forward pegs, at least as an option, they could sell a butt-ton of a bagger variant here in the states. As it is now, even the riders in the promo video look like they're in a very uncomfortable rider triangle.
@nabiha37
@nabiha37 Год назад
You are absolutely correct. I am 60 years of age, 6’2 with shoe size 15. My foot does not fit under the boxer engine to go up in gears. Or to lift my foot to hit the breaks. What were they thinking. I am a bmw guy, I worked for bmw 28 years. I own every model of BMW. It bother me I can’t buy a BMW CRUISER. I felt the GS 1200 way too soft fir my taste. We need a 1600 B. GT with forward controls or any bagger or cruiser with forward controls designed for people over 6 feet.

Triumph makes a pretty penny selling retro styled bikes, and they aren't Harley or Indian. Their prices are comparable and sometimes even dearer than american cruisers. I imagine people at BMW were looking at them when they thought "hey! We've got some heritage laying around, why don't we use it to make our own overpriced retro cruiser?"

I have an 1150 gs with 780k miles on it climbing every day. I also have an r32. And I can tell you for a fact when this comes out i won't buy it. But give it a year. And I'll pick one up second hand. I've been waiting for this machine for some time. Something that isn't a big harley. I hit a deer on my 1250 gs on its maiden voyage in March when going through some snow. The cylinders protected me and possibly saved my legs. I only ride bmw's now.

i'll take my 600cc 1968 R69s in preference every time. Half the horses but half the weight. These bikes were not originally designed as cruisers but as tourers and sports tourers and I agree that the attempt to generate a cruiser is unsuccessful. Only hope for BMW is that they have created a new category of Retro Sports Cruisers.
@capobiancg
@capobiancg 4 года назад
BMW tried this before, sort of. Look at the R1200C, it looks similar. It was discontinued. However, this R18 looks more retro and beefy. People will buy its limited quantities collector, probably for a second bike or moving up. Having reverse on any large size bike couldn't hurt. I can't see HD owners jumping ship. For me, I'll stick with the torque and versatility of an R1250RT. Agree the pipes are just a hint to big visually and it doesn't sound very loud either. It sounds like any other Boxster twin engine.
@M3RRIH3W13
@M3RRIH3W13 4 года назад
I think BMW isn't looking to dominate the big cruiser market. It's a big dollar, boomer cruiser that isn't like everyone else's bike. It's the bike that you ride to Pebble Beach and donate to the local art scene. I think that they have done enough with the aftermarket and slick press to get some attention.
@jef9711
@jef9711 3 года назад
Time will tell. I've been riding BMW's and Honda's for 30 + years. Its a gamble and BMW is willing to roll the dice on a cruiser again. I would not have bought a R1200C, but this bike looks nice. Maybe becase I'm a bit older now than I was when the R1200C came out and my tastes have changed. The weight isnt so bad. If youre considering an 1800 cc bike you should be able to handle it. I've had a GL1800 for 18 years now, so this is actually lighter than the wing and its on par with a H-D for weight. I've ridden cruisers for friends when I had to move their bike for them and I hate forward controls; and I'm an average 5' 11, 200 lb guy. You cant get your butt up out of the seat very well, if you need to cross some RR tracks or a nasty pothole that you cant swerve around, its much better to get outtta the seat and let your knees work as they were designed, saves your back. If youre doing a long ride, a nice 500 mile day, its good to stand up on the pegs from time to time and stretch, gets the blood circulating through your butt and legs, keeps you from getting as sore. Try that with forward mount controls and floorboards. I've considered a H-D from time to time but its one fo the things I would have to fix in short order or get one of the Harley's that have mid controls. Yeah the pipes are hideous. If I were to buy an R18 those pipes are destined for the garage attic and some new pipes are in order. Probably pull those chrome intake covers and valve covers too and send them off to the paint shop for a satin black powder coat.

As always go for a test ride before talking the R18 down. A lot of the comments here try to find excuses why not to do that. Until end of May 2021 already over 1,500 R18 hit the road in Germany alone and belongs to the top ten in 2021. In comparison the over 5,500 new GS found a owner in 2021 alone so far, which is the top seller over all with more then double the figures of the 2nd place the Kawasaki Z900 with over 2,100 sold. I don't know the worldwide sales figures, but the R18 is here to stay.

Saw this at the Barber Museum last year, first impressions were how do you make tight turns without scrapping the cylinders. Second thought was, what aftermarket exhaust system could someone get to replace the heavy ugly OEM system. Third was price of this unit versus competition in this class of motorcycle, don't see it winning many minds and hearts over.

A lot of people who buys nostalgia bikes like triumph Bonneville bobbers, thruxton and Kawasaki w800, z900rs or Ducati scrambler don't have a lot of choices for cruisers besides this new BMW, they don't want a Harley because of the snobism attached to the brand so that bike might appeal to them it might be a bike that attracts new younger motorcycle riders and not the 40 plus white male that wants a Harley anyway and that nothing would change their mind. I would buy one if I would already have bought a bike last year, maybe in the next years

This bike reminds me of Europeans trying to do cross-over music and putting on a good musical; we just can't do it: it's what Americans do best. So leave Americans to build dinosaurs with pre-tractor tech and go on doing what you do best; develop technology and build machines for the progressive crowd. This looks like what it is: an anachronism.

Easy to put shit on something you do not understand. This is a beautiful BMW and a real departure from the line up. Why? Have a look at the current market heavy weights and see who is in trouble. BMW recognise this and have nailed the demographic that have the budget & desire to own bikes like this. This is a sunday cruiser for the weekender who wants no association with tattoos and drug dealing gangs, but instead loves gobs of torque and and easy riding position. Shorter riders make up the majority of buyers but your argument for riding position is a little lost on me, and yes, I'm 51yo. Good on you BMW, this is the start of something beautiful, like the off road genre you redefined 10 years ago.

I like the look for sure, just like most throwback bikes. I'm sure someone will come up with a replacement for those hideous pipes if the bike is around more than a year or two. I would even fit... at 5'7", the mid controls on my Dyna are quite comfortable for me. The thing is, I buy bikes to RIDE them, not just look at them. I can't see myself touring anywhere on this thing, which is most of the riding I do. My Dyna has been all over the eastern half of the country, even as far as Sturgis. I've done back to back (to back to back) iron butts on it. My Road King hasn't been with me long, but it's been almost as far.. still can't decide which I prefer. That BMW is all about appearances. It's for riding to cruise night, or doing a loop around town.. an easy 60 miles or so for a photo op. My next new (or new to me... whatever) will likely be a BMW. I'm torn between the R1250RT, the K1600 and the GS (for those brief moments I think about returning to the dirt). I promise you though, it won't be an R18.

Your credibility on this rant is very low. Have you ridden it? I just bought the R18TC after test-riding the HD Ultra Limited, Road Glide, Goldwing, R1250RT. I am 6'3," and the R18 feels roomier than the Harley's. It is very nimble and compared to the Ultra and Road Glide, it smokes HD on "quickness." The bike has character. the highway foot rests are fine. It's a German bike, it's made for 6 footers.

To me these bikes are both in the same place, which is a little out of place and I like a mixed bag of curve balls and different spokes every now and again. It screams hipster for all the right reasons. I certainly cannot afford it my self but I hope to see some ripping around stealing some market from Harley who I frankly believe deserve it. Despite my intrigue with the bike, I am admittedly much more likely to get a Triumph Bobber instead, or for the money the Indian FTR1200. I ride a worn Buell XB12 today because of their unique oddity. So in the spirit of a proper rebel-hipster, bring on some European flat twin cruisers.

Excellent commentary. I actually was considering the R18, but the lack of a forward control, position is enough to deterr me. Thank you for a well rounded and concise video.

You must not have been around a lot of BMW motorcycle people. They have a cult following and these cult members have a lot of cash. They will sell loads of these before they even get them on the boat. It will sell. By the way I don't know what those German words mean, but for those of us who have owned them BMW stands for Bring Me your Wallet!

Together with a buddy I rented two R18s from our local BMW dealer for a day and it was awesome. We turned a lot of necks on those things. I don't think a single biker passed us without giving a compliment that day. The R18 is an absolute eye-catcher.

it's funny the guy that made this video is obviously outside of their demographic and realizes it. i think he underestimates the older aged motorcycle market. those are the people buying brand new bikes, they're the ones with the money to buy brand new bikes. yeah, people in their 20s don't want this bike, but they're prob not the majority of people buying new bikes anyway. it's the same story for sports cars. most fans of them are in their 20s, but they're also not the ones buying them brand new. so it's hard for car companies to build them cars if they're not willing to shell out the cash to buy one new. they want them used and cheap so they can modify them. it's a weird dilemma in the bike/car industry. lots of enthusiasts with loud opinions, but not really able to support the companies that build the sporty bike/cars they demand.

I like my R18 classic, I am 5 feet 10 inch, on long trips if I set back on the seat there is no problem. the massive amount of torque is like having a new form of turn help. This and setting much lower going down the road. I feel much more secure. The turning radius in a parking lot is wide. I have a 1200cc HD sportster and the big difference is with the sportster it was always vibrating parts loose or breaking down costing me money in 3 years. When at a stop sign i was on my toes, when in a turn i felt i was on a unicycle compared to the R18 that hugs the turn.

Even in two years it will look good, but who cares about cost or leg position when they installed a 91HP boat anchor where a motor should go. They get 136HP out of a 1250 twin this should have more like 125HP and over 150#ft or it should just stay home.

@@shivajesus well to get the torque up to 160 Nm they had to use a long stroke. So comparing the r 1250 with this is not viable as the torque is not near the figures of the R18. Cruiser riders care about Torque first an then they want a large heavy bike 😂. Horsepower is not even stated by Harley on their Website and a 280 kg Sportster is called a girls bike.

I own one and I'm 6'4", 220lbs. I've ridden it from full until empty 3 times a day and feel fine. The seating position is actually not bad at all. Wind noise sucks, but I've yet to ride anything other than an RT, where it doesn't.

There's one demographic you forgot about: The old guys who have 6-12 of the old 50's, 60's and 70's air-cooled BMWs sitting in various states of disrepair in their garages/barns and think this bike hits just the right nostalgia buttons while also not breaking down on them every time the want to ride across the state.

i used to have a BMW R80/7. What happened to all the smaller boxer twins? I don't care about how fast it is, or if it out-Harleys Harley, but I do want something that I can manage, and not too cramped (I am 6' 3", 34 inseam, and my knees and back aren't what they used to be). Yeah, I used to ride 8 hours plus in a stretch, stopping only for fuel, in all weathers. But now I am more of a "nice day for a ride" type of guy. Now I am in my mid-50's, I get that nostalgia for a modern "old" bike. And to be honest, my budget is the most it has ever been (being a tail-end Boomer has its perks). But I want one much more like a modernised R5, not some bloated-mobile like an R18.
