Had it for last two year and put over 40k+ miles, Tons of road trip and city driving. No issues. Spark plug was replaced and engine oil changed every 4-5k mile. Currently at 105k mile runs like dream.
I've been running an F82 S55 primarily as a track car for about 6 years, estimate it's covered around 15k track miles. BMW did an amazing job with the cooling, oil surge protection and general track readiness of these cars. I used to log everything but no longer bother as it works so well. I've never known a car to be so stable on track with cooling and I've tracked so many cars. The only problem I've had was a coil (replaced all 6). Remember watching a video with one of the engineers responsible for building the F8X. He said the brief was to build a car that could take sustained track use without overheating, my experience says they did exactly this. The road cars run the same cooling as the GT4 cars, same engine and gearbox too afaik.
This is great info! Plan to go to an F8X platform after my N54 powered track car meets its end, but 5k+ track miles and just regular maintenance so far! 22 oil changes and counting
I can confirm! I was on a number of trackdays with pretty hot weather and the oil temps are constantly around 110°C. And as the turbos are water cooled with an electrical waterpump you are pretty safe here, too. Regular oil changes and maintanance and you are good to go :)
I'm at mid-60 K on my 2018 F80. It's a beast of an engine. I keep up on all the maintenance oil changes roughly every 2000 mi. Running it on flex-fuel stage 2 tune this thing is a blast to drive. I put it through hell daily driving it taking it to the drift track and the road course track and it just keeps on going, bro. There are people at this point running this engine up to 200,000 mi with maybe 1 or two of the issues you mentioned like PCV valve etc. which is really better than a lot of other commuter cars out there which is surprising considering all the abuse these cars can handle and keep running fine. Hats off to BMW on the S55.
I bought my 17 f80 comp dct in the 20k mile range. I'm at almost 95k miles now. My charge cooler failed at 49k. I've changed plugs, fluids, charge cooler, chargepipes (preventative), and brakes. I have a front end thud (def suspension related. Undiagnosed specifically) when I hit bumps even at low speeds which doesn't seem to affect drive ability of the car. I also have hi speed brake wobble which new rotors will surely fix. Plan on keeping the car and driving a lot and hard for the foreseeable future
Thank you very much for this awesome and informative video! I had a 2015 6MT F80 M3 and now have a 2020 6MT F87 M2 Competition and have kept it stock. Really am on the fence about jumping into the G80 XDrive platform or doing a single turbo build on the M2C. After your video it doesn't seem like the S55 is as 'unreliable' as some people keep saying. Thanks again!
@@ctknetwork3008 I'm back and forth every day... Pin the hub on the S55 and single turbo on a tire and have some fun, or just go straight for an S58 XDrive and enjoy a renewed warranty before going into mods. If they do an M2 Competition with an XDrive I'd be hands down sold on the spot.
Im at 112k miles. Been tuned since 50k. So far aside from regular maintenance, I've only had the pcv go bad resulting in a whole valve cover swap. Other than that, cars been solid.. kinda wanna order most of those mentioned things and do a complete overhaul over the winter though
Any possibility you guys will be turning this into a series where you'll have follow up DIY videos on how to replace the items you mentioned, at least for the most common ones? That would be so awesome for your customers who buy parts from you.
Youre a few weeks ahead haha - we have started publishing the DIYs for this platform on our other FCP Euro DIY Channel - all of which we shot while making a build series on the car/platform here on this channel!
@@jldp24 do you work on S55's ? I do!! So keep quiet😉 Both engines have been overhauled once. S55 is trash compared to an S58! S58 is like a B58 with extra fuel pump, cooling and reliability. Even the weaknesses of the B58 such as pcv valve problems have been resolved.
@@tinodeblier5694 how can anyone tske you seriously. Hoe is the S55 trash..that's a nuts statement. S55s are bullet proof. Inb4 crankshub yada yada..only true for heavily modified 800hp engines etc
@@jldp24 I know crankhube failures on stock S55 engines at only 13.000km. Piston failure on the Nürburgring with only a stage1 map with stock internals. Waterpump failures, valvetronic, failures, extrem oil leaks around the vavle cover, hpfp failure..etc etc.. I know also three racing teams with a M2 comp cup race car that have complet overhauls at only 10.000 circuit km's +- 6000 miles.
I just cant comprehend the level of unreliability in European vehicles. Bro has half of the engine bay in front of him. The engineers can't be this incompetent can they or its planned obsolescence?
You could spend 2 years doing the same videos for all the BMW, Benz, VW/Audi, Porsche engine families going back 20 years. This kind of video is quite valuable.
F80 M3 700 hp E85 best car I've ever owned put 40k miles modded ran hard flawless maintenance now has 88k miles runs like the day I bought it. Gorgeous car to look at and feels exciting. Very pleased.
Really nice comprehensive video! I’ve had my 2016 F82 Competition for 6 trouble-free years. I’m at 54000 miles and I change my oil at around 5000 miles (plus other maintenance ahead of schedule). Love the car and I still get a big smile every time the garage door goes up. I know there will be some maintenance expenses soon but it’s worth it, in my opinion. I plan on keeping this car for many years since it is simply the best car I’ve ever owned! Still turns heads and super fun to drive! 👍🏁😊
@@jonasbaine3538 Not an expert but I guess it depends on usage. The B58 is found in any 40i post 2015. Can't remember it's exact horsepower figures, but the least powerful version should be over 300 bhp. It has great tuning potential too. Can't give exact limits, but best on online videos. It's tuned to 500-700 whp. It's a solid engine. The S58 is simply put a high performance. From what I know it's superior to the B58 in literally every way since it's found in your G series M2, M3 and M4. It's just more expensive than the B58, because of the cars it's in. So in short. If you're wealthy: S58 If not, but still want good performance: B58 Anyone with more expertise is free to add or correct me
It is a very good engine, once the flaws are fixed. I don't think it is 'the best' M engine though, as the newer S58 engine is a more developed, better, more modern engine. I had the B58 in my previous car, an M140i. This was a fantastic engine, and after I tuned it to 455bhp/634nm, it was just a beast. My current car is the OG M2, and has the N55 engine, which is just not quite as good in any area.
Absolutely one of they best M engines, bulet proof not idiot proof... I have many S54 and N54 and of corse an S55, and ofcorse the cars are STOCK and serviced at Bmw dealership. Beautiful engineering.
Great video...I got a 2018 M3 Comp 25k miles on it...have for like 2 years now and no issue....keeping it stock and will flash a gts tune on it soon...I update all the ecu on it and just change the led module which gives it that golden bright yellow looking light...I do my own oil change 👍.
Don’t forget the loose exhaust cam bolt issue that is slowly prevailing. Watch carefully for sudden knocking/ticking coming from the head. Just got mine repaired under warranty by bmw.
@@fcpeuro-media future readers I started a thread on bimmerpost f87 S55 engine sub forum with videos of the noise before and after and dealer steps taken from Tsara case!
@@ps2cho Are you the thread starter for the compilation of the ticking? If so, great idea. I've been seeing more threads about it in recent past, but good PSA for every S55 owners.
I just had mine taken care of about 7 months ago. Bought the car with a loud tapping noise when it was at operating temp. Also was covered under warranty
@tjackman Thanks man, I'm very grateful I get to own one. In my opinion, it's one of the best values on the second-hand market. They've come down in price compared to last year, and when you look at that price segment it's hard to beat. It's ultra low mile at under 8k, so fingers crossed I get to enjoy it worry free for years to come. Keep working at it, I never thought I'd get this, and if I can, you or anyone else surely can.
I have f80 and have replace every single item on this video except the oil pan and cooler. 105,000 miles with ps2 turbo with bolt ons, driving hard 60k on tune. Most oem parts were upgraded to aftermarket for more reliability. It’s fair to say you will have touch on everything on this video and more by 100k. Upgrade to eu5 injector if you can and stick with stock intake. It will save misfire and hesitation on startup. Sick video FCP
Yes. I have aftermarket things. Replace transmission fluid. Diff fluid. Front hub bearing. Pads rotor. Right now I have burning oil in my ps2 turbo. I digress.
Love performance but this is planned obsolescence, which is found pretty much every where now. 8 years ago I spoked to some Germans who worked on the automotive industry and also an American engineer who was based in Germany. They all told me that German cars are really built for 70 to 80k miles. That's crazy considering the price tag on these things
I'm at 110k miles, Iv replaced a leaking valve cover, leaking air charge cooler, and some accelerator sensors, aside from that everything has been very reliable I do keep up with all the basic maintenance and don't drive the car very hard to be honest.
Non-related. I have a 2015 M235i N55 era model. Car is a tank and reliable with proper maintenance. Replace wear items and change your fluids and your car can have160k miles as I do
About the crank hub and it seeming to affect DCT cars more: I've seen surveys that do seem to indicate that DCT cars are affected by that part slipping about twice as often as manual cars. BUT! BMW sold 4 times as many DCT cars as manual. With that in mind it would seem to indicate that the DCT cars are actually half as likely to have this issue. While the DCT is capable of super fast shifts, it's also not going to have a clumsy/aggressive driver dumping the clutch on upshifts or ever having a non rev-matched downshift like you can with a manual. Just food for thought...
I only had the drainback valve come out when i accidentally dropped the housing cap. It exploded when it hit the ground and still haven't recovered the pieces to this day. So glad I didn't run the car without it after hearing this.
I would love to have a bmw m4 or m3 but I’ve seen too many bimmers broken down and the ones that are on the road are constantly getting work done … sooooooo expensive to keep them running cherry.
Have to pay play buddy. You shouldn't be looking at any performance car if you don't have the money or hand-skill. You see a lot of BMWs in general because they are the #1 selling luxury car in the world by volume.
These cars are fairly reliable when it comes to high performance BMWs. 3+ years with about 50K miles done on mine with stock hub with a good mix up hard track driving too. The key is to keep it as stock as possible when it comes to tuning, and preventively upgrade the weak points with better than OEM parts such as the Wagner intercooler. Many aftermarket parts, whether suspension, cooling, etc honestly make the car worse but keep on top of maintenance and take care of the key items such as plastic chargepipes etc and you’re golden.
Cheap quality aftermarket parts make the car worse. High quality aftermarket parts will improve on the car. I have bilstein b16 damptronic coilovers, spl full rear arms, SPL front upper and lower control arms on my f82 and the handling and steering response on it is the same as a 991.1 gt3 rs.
been running flex fuel stage 2 tune with a hub for years now and i put it through hell and it keeps running great. I do oil changes every 2k on account of the ethanol.
BMW hasn't learnt anything from the N54 if they're still using cheap plastic components and also poor gasket's that need replacing every few years. Shameful consumer driven mentality rather than the "BMW Reliability" that we used to love in older cars.
Had an M4 comp for three years, every year I replace all the filters, oil and do four wheel alignment. 50k on the clock no issues at all and I drive it up in the revs. In owning I’ve only replaced the rear springs thanks to a pot hole and I’ve had two rear tyres. That’s it. This year I’ll be doing the sparks as recommended.
So these cars with S55 engine are terrible complicated shits... Much more in service than on the roads. :)) I have got only 20t miles with my M2c, so going to sell as soon as possible.
Very informative video. Thanks 👍🏼😎 Which important maintenance service would you recommend based on the millage for this S55 engine? and when these are done which" OTHER" services/parts would you do or replaced while doing this? Thanks again!!
Great car. I have a 2017 F80 M3. I wish I would have watched a video like this earlier in my ownership. I've already spent $ on items I probably should have sought an aftermarket option for (A2W intercooler, J-pipe, etc). Thanks for making this video.
Great Video, I own an F82 M4 for a few months now and I love it, only 40.000 km, so hopefully not much maintenance in the near future, Request: could you do video on how to replace the rear bearings for this car, I have search a lot, but I cannot find any videoa on this anywhere, E46, E9x, but not for the F8x.
I own a 2017 M3 Comp, vin is WBS8M9109H5F95107. This s55 is the most trash piece of shate engine ever owned. During the time i drove it, the PCV rubber membrane broke without warning light, took my dealer so long to realize where, and it already cause me: rear seal, front upper seal, and oil leaks everywhere. I can't imagine how terrible the IQ is those BMW idiert engineers to use plastic and rubber to rely upon building an engine, less intelligent than a Toyota engineer 😢
No where near as good an engine as the S50 /S54 and let’s face it who doesn’t love the sound of a NA lump with a carbon air box at full chat. However we have an S58 running on motec ecu going into our other race car , that’s a far better engine.
you should make a series all about german vehicle maintenance intervals and what needs to be done or modified to make sure your vehicle reliable in the long term. I find there isn't any materials or documentation for people out there
OEM is outsourcing part production more often than not, so sometimes it's more on the manufacturing side than design, where flaws will come into play. Also, many failures are usually due to mileage/time-oriented issues vs. initial design flaws.
