Hi fredland, I am glad you asked but I created a complete video on that topic a while back so for quick access enjoy by clicking on the link. Cheers. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WD18E1AzuN0.html
Computer operated clutch and the SMG still has to be driven like a manual (let off throttle, shift) most consumers drove them like automatics causing high failure rate. The pump failed frequently because of this, then are various senors/relays that would prevent the car from starting or going in gear.
oh snap really? i would go from third and let the revs drop while accelerating and downshifting at the same time then zoom then upshift again and go from there without really lifting up my foot, i’ve only done it like 2 or 3 times tho. am i not allowed to do that? in my e46
Does this also apply to the 6-speed SMG? I'm planning to buy it and practice a bit on You Tube haha. When I'm in manual mode and I'm going now at speed 6 / 5 / or 4, do I just press the brake at a traffic light, don't I have to change gears and when it stops, it goes back to first gear like an automatic?
If you stop the car and then shut it off in drive and not sequential do you put it in gear first before turning it off or can you put it in gear with the car off like a manual? Thank you
You'll want to have that dollar to put towards maintenance. All in all, number one favorite BMW! Looking for low mileage m5 or 6 now. Hard to find one that was cared for properly.
There's a 2006 M6 for sale near me for $16,000, which I'm thinking about. FYI, The car safety guys say you should always keep it in gear at a light, whether it's a manual or an automatic to maintain control. I put my automatic in N at lights, and if I had a manual I'd put it in N for the reasons you said, but I just figured I pass that on. If you were on a network TV show their lawyers would tell you to say what the safety specialists say just to cover their ass'. Thanks for the video.
Hey Mark, I was wondering if you might be able to do a vid or comment on how best to drive the e60 M5 for comfort, or to minimize the lurchiness of the smg if say hauling the family around and want the ride to be as smooth as possible. thanks in advance
Great vid as usual, please when you get a chance help with using gears to slow the car down. Sometimes I down shift to slow down. Is this Ok. That car has to be emaculate with under 35k mile. Thanks
Hi, thanks for watching. Generally there is no harm by downshifting a reasonable amount, A huge downshift can produce a bit more bite on the driveline but overall it is not an issue and I do it as well a fair amount. I saves the brakes too and gets this 4000 lb beast to a halt in a hurry.
You are 100% wrong about needing to put the transmission into neutral at a stop. When you are sitting in 1st gear at a standstill, the clutch is not engaged and the transmission is in neutral, it just displays the one because the car is ready to take off and engage in first gear. Being a car guy you should feel the car engaging into first from N when taking off in the SMG III transmission, and know that almost every single modern car with paddle shifts and not an actual clutch will downshift/take you out of gear
You sure can throw it in neutral while still rolling, but a warning like in a manual car make sure you reduce load on the drivetrain at the moment you pop it into neutral
@@ECPP You might know more about this car than I do, but you should be able to start in 2nd gear otherwise it wouldn't let you shift into it when at a complete stop. It's useful if you are in low traction conditions such as snow, ice or rain
No you have to let off the gas every time you shift like a manual it’s sequential people don’t know how to drive it that’s why it’s failure rates are so high
I'd like to get one of these in a manual but the prices are nuts -so am I understanding how this stupid SMG works? It seems like they crossed a manual with an auto, making it as complex as possible. Also appears you could call it an auto without a "Park" position. I believe you have another video out - but let's see - you get in, press the brake, hit the start button, it's in Neutral with the parking brake on, you shift to Drive, and it works like an auto, except you can override the auto with the paddles? For Reverse, you push down and up to the left like a BMW manual? All this without getting into the various settings. I wish more rich guys would have been smart enough to order manuals back then.
No, its actually a manual transmission that uses an automated clutch but can be set to automatic mode for ease of driving. Beneath the surface though, it runs like a manual transmission.
Nice video to explain "drive mode", "manual mode", "sequential mode", "fast shift mode"....etc.....You unfortunately left out the most prevalent mode every SMG BMW owner gets to experience on a regular basis - "FAILURE MODE". A gazillion sensors, a few powerful computers networked together to constantly "discuss" what's happening and what to do next, and software written by computer geeks that have never engineered anything that's durable/reliable - what could possibly go wrong? If you know anything about BMW SMG and you still decide to throw down money to buy one of these steaming piles of excrement, then you deserve the many hours that you'll spend sitting on the side of the road waiting for the opportunity to have your wallet/bank account emptied.
Not at all Josh, because most who bought these originally were rich execs who really did not care and just chucked it into auto anyway. Now you are seeing the true enthusiasts driving these cars. Thanks for the comment. Cheers.
Great video but this BMW sucks just like my cheap BMW. It's a joke despite the price tag on it! Because this is not a true sequential gear. It's for road hogs and it's a pain in the neck. The car is always trying to shift down without my f..ing control over it. I just can barely tolerate that and understand why people love primitive manual over the true racing sequential. But I've learned to watch it closely on the braking so that I know what gear I'm in. At least BMW doesn't do it backwards (it's a backward pull on the gearstick for the upshift and a forward push for the downshift = the correct way). Many others do it backwards (like Volkswagen) and that's a f...ing nightmare, but the "f" word is not strong enough. It's like swapping the gas and brake pedals. Sheer stupidity of the manufacturers. No wonder people hate automatic. What's good DSG for if it's all f..ing backwards. Do you want a car with a gas and brake reversed?! -- Thanks but no thanks.
