A slideshow of a BMX i built from scratch, to the exact specifications of a picture in my head from 20 years ago!
I had a BMX when i was a kid that looked like this, so i decided to build one.
I have not ridden one in about 20 years and have built it using trial and error and information from the net.
Most parts came from Ebay and it took me about a month to complete.
I have gotten kind of addicted now and have started on my second build were i will have hopefuly have learned from my mistakes and create an even better machine!
Any advice is more than welcome!!!!
( as of 16.6.08 has a new standard byke co. 28t chainring and brake cable routed through stem. also new brake blocks in the hope of actualy stopping the plastic rims.) now also has a 3 piece crank most stickers removed and a new seat! still never ridden though!

to be honest the bike isnt worth that much to anyone else, yet is almost priceless to me! you should build one, that way it can be exactly what you want!

Read the description... It's a hobby and he's designing it to a bike that was around 20 years ago from his head from parts brought from ebay. It's his life, his hobby and I think he's done a pretty good job. I would like to do something like that but I just spent £300 on a Saracen Mantra 3 so I have no money at the moment. (I'm 15 so don't start saying I'm poor). Good job Dave!

it was, as you will see the bike is not liked by many "bmx'ers" of today, wich is not nice to hear after all the hard work but i think most old skool or people who read the description can appreciate it! give it a go, immense fun!

primer enables paint to stick to surfaces that it otherwise wouldnt i.e. metal. the skyway mags are 80's, i can see why many dont like them but they are old skool and i love them.

nice touch with the cloth on the bottom of the folks to stop scratches i like what you have built ive been buildinf bmx for over 20 years and i can say you have built a good looking bike with all the right parts for that frame i like how it looks from the front granted its not like a moden bmx but whos to say which is best new school or okld school either way its a mint bike well done

thanks, the spraying was what it was all about, i wanted to build the bike just like my childhood one but didnt know the first thing about bmx! spraying i do know though :-)

for those looking to built a bike from scratch remember to note the type of crank your frame uses (euro?), size and type of fork you will need, size of seat post, and axle type. also, spray paint usually doesn't look as nice as you hope unless you do ALOT of wet sanding and even then there is no way to know how tough it will be. use industrial enamels like engine enamel (for red or black) or refrigerator enamel epoxy (white).

i actualy struggled with this part and paid my local bike shop to supply and fit a chain. later when i replaced the chainring for a 28t one i found my self back in the same position and bought a "chain link tool" for about £3 and a set of to joining links for about £4 and it was easy. im not sure it can be done without the correct tool but they are cheap and it is easy when you see how the tool works! good luck, but you wont need luck if you get the tool :-)

i just kept the front as a gyro would ruin the look i wanted, but most i see have only a back brake. i guess its a matter of preference and what type of riding you do. Project 2 is more of a flatland style so i will prob put both brakes on. thanks!

Hi, i didnt have it sand blasted but did rub it down with a rough sand paper and most of the original paint was gone. The preparation took considerably longer than painting and is boring but well worth it ( if you fail to prepare, prepare to fail! ) good luck!

good job m8. this lot dont realise its down 2 ur preference, dont listen. keep it /do 2 it wot u will. tip 4 project 2, if u get a hammer n long flathead screwdriver u can knock the bearing cups out of the headset and bottom bracket, stops gettin paint on em

i just used a standard botom bracket kit for a 1 piece crank. Not sure of the size think its just the most common UK size? it was only about £8 for the bearings and cups etc. It will be replaced soon as ive started to modify the bike further and project 2 has taken a back seat!! thanks.

i think so too, the one i had as a kid was slightly off white but i prefer it like this. its mercedes polar white and bmw jet black! thanks for your comment.

i cant realy help you here mate, the only thing i would suggest is try ebay for any sticker sets and see if the seller does custom orders. i have used this approach for stickers for my landrover and got the results i was after even though nobody was officialy selling the ones i was looking for.

i have taken your ideas onboard but unfortunately have decided not to go with this style for the second project. I imagine this was a good theme when you drew it up using wax crayons and possibly finger paints, but is not quite what i am aiming for this time round. Possibly in the future? or why not try this yourself? thanks.

mine just had allen bolts holding the arms on, and then removing the axle/middle part was not dissimilar to removing the three piece, just a few more washers etc the bearings and so on were the same.

yes i did, not much though. i followed the instructions on the aerosol cans and it worked out pretty good. good luck if your doing the same!

Nice work! I just did the same thing with a donor Haro frame. How much did you find the plastic rims for? I was looking for those and only found used ones. I just started riding again as well, here's a tip - set your handlebars out further, it gives you more space inside to pedal and steer.

many bmx biker here i saw when they passes,,i heared the noise from rear wheel of thier bmx,,and being noisy was good how do they do that.??? its not a annying noise but relly good to hear.!

@maurorex the peddles should come off with a wrench ( one is a reverse thread so watch out) you need a special tool to remove a chain and put it back on, they are only cheap though.

im not sure of the exact model. it was a bottle green colour to start with ( both frame and forks ) if that helps? had a comment a few months back saying " diamond back demon"???

thanks. is winstanleys in wigan? i used them for the final few parts after i learned a bit about bmx. i got a 3 piece crank and 28t chain ring, also the shitty looking front brake is a we the pople one, its the only one i could find that matched the pillars on the bike. ( i got a gyro also but ended up putting the brake on the front as my original bike had no gyro )

im not sure buddy, the tyres on this one are pretty close to rubbing and theyre only small, but it is a very old frame?

it is a DB but im not sure exactly what model, it only had space for 10mm axles if that helps identify it? and the brake i fitted was the only one i could due to the positioning of the pillars.

its an old diamond back, project 2 is the left over frame from the donor bike, a specialized frame.

I have decided to do a scratch build as well, its going to be alot cheaper to just buy the pieces I want then to try to find a complete bike the way I want it.

powder coating would have offered more resistance, although 4 coats of mercedes polar white and around 10 coats of laquer is holding out pretty well! i wouldnt call the bike "so bad" but then i am slightly biased! :-)

its pretty easy except removing the cups (which you have to do even though they will seem exactly the same!)by the time you remove the 1 piece you will have seen how it all works and the 3 piece although having more pieces i would say is easier. i removed the cups with a hammer and an old screwdriver and put the new ones in using a piece of threaded stud (an old axle will do) and some big nuts and washers to clamp it together. there are vids on here that show this though! good luck

that is a bit steep for a frame but if you ride then go for it! i do regret not just buying a decent frame as i have now replaced most parts i originaly used (except rims!) for pretty good ones but am left with a frame i dont know anything about, even the model! i did enjoy spraying it up though, that was the best part seeing it come together from a rusty piece of s**t!

not sure what it weighs, its pretty light now with the new small chainring etc and the wheels are alot lighter than a set of "alex" ones i have from project2. overall though i have nothing to compare it too.

Great job! I was thinking about making my own bike, looks fun.. What did you type in on ebay for the really cheap frames, on websites they are like 200quid!! Might aswel buy a bike for that price!

the paint job is good and most parts have been replaced ( 28t chain ring, 3p crank, stem, peddles etc. ) but not the rims, Skyway are awesome!!

cheers, the orange colour you see at first is actualy a primer, the bike was originaly green ( same as forks ) the paint was quite well removed on the frame. the stickers were only an after thought to hide some minor imperfections and scratches, ive removed most again now.

many many of the best and first bmx bikes had mag wheels and were not only bunny hopped but raced, freestyled on etc.

it was actualy in realy good condition considering. no cracks or even bad scratches, just a project that somebody started and gave up. the orange colour was actaly the primer used by the last person, the frame and forks were both green originaly!

does disc mean chainring? if so thats well gone! 28t standard byke co. one on now. the rims cant go as they complete the 80's look i was going for, but the pedals are indeed poo!
