A BNSF freight train puts on a great show deep in the Rocky mountains of Colorado on the Moffat route. This train will enter tunnel 17 in just a few minutes. BNSF prefers General electric locomotives on the Moffat route, while Union Pacific prefers EMD locomotives. I like the sound of the GE's better.

The amount. Of work those traction motors are doing is insane!

I've often thought that these specific locations, through mountains where you know for a fact you're going to be running super-heavy tonnage year around, that electrification would be a good option. Your could have 7k, 8k, even 10k HP electric locos the same size as conventional diesel powered models since you don't have to worry about self-powering the large drive motors. Better still, 70%-80% of the electricity they pull from the grid going **up** the mountain can be reclaimed thought regenerative braking going down the other side. Obviously you'd lose a little time connecting and disconnecting the fully-electric helpers, but if you could get it down so you just needed one electric helper at the front and maybe one at the back (spreading out the tractive effort, etc.) and be able to idle the diesel locos during the crossing (excellent safety too since you could instantly bring the diesels back up if something went wrong with the helpers) I would think would save a lot of fuel and a lot of wear and tear.

You need like our new UK Locos being built. They have a huge diesel engine, a Pantograph for overhead power use, & 3rd rail shoes for running in the south and around London.

Yeah but you forgot one thing g about electric locomotives. They have the tendency to short our and can cause the locomotive to burn up because of the electrical circuit in the control system. This type of locomotive is not fail safe!one thing about these locomotives is ,all it takes is one circuit to malfunction, and you will have a massive fire that will spread from one unit to the other, causing the whole train to kill everyone on board.

There are a lot of people who dont know a thing about locomotive traction motors. All you have to do is look at the different gear ratios stenciled on the locomotive trucks, and for example, al locomotive that has a gear ratio of 62to 15 will give you a total speed of 65 mph . All locomotives that are geared below 65 mph will take a heavy train up the grade without stalling. But ,locomotives that's geared for high speed trains will stall on the grades.And what you will get is reduced reactive effort at low speeds. Your don't have to go to school or college to learn about traction motors and different gear ratios!all you have to do is look at the numbers that are write on the locomotive trucks and look at the maximum speed of the locomotive inside the cab above the windshield, above the control stand. It will tell you what the limit of speed the locomotive is allowed to go.

Here are the different types of gear ratios for diesel locomotives. 81-71 will give you 83 mph . 59-18 will give you 90 mph.a 74-18 will give you 93 mph.and a 61-16 will give you a 78 mph gearing. All these are high speed ratings that are strictly for high speed trains!also, locomotives that have very low speed gearing in a mixed consist of locomotives cannot not exceed the top speed of the lowest geared locomotive in the consist on any given train!the purposes of this is to prevent the traction motors from burning up on the high speed locomotives that are in the consist. This is why you should never put locomotives with high speed gearing on slow,heavy drag freight on mountainous grades!it you put this type of locomotive on a heavy grade,you will burn the traction motors up!spin them much faster and you will burn the whole locomotive up.

BNSF is predominately GE all over their entire system, engineers have told me GEs are better heavy pullers. UP it seems like its a 50/50 chance of either GE or EMD on a train based on the many videos Ive seen, including on the Moffat Sub

Actually those are rock slide fences. If there is a rock slide they will break the wires and activate a red signal. If you look close there is horizontal wires going all the way up the poles.

Traveling Tom thats 2% on 1000 meters/yards? Or simply just 2% angel?
@travelingtom923
@travelingtom923 6 лет назад
2% means it would rise in elevation 2 feet for every 100 feet or around 2 yards for ever 91.44 meters. Anything over 3% would be difficult for most trains to climb and 4% is about as steep as you can go with most railroads. Here is a link to another video of mine that shows a train climbing the grade just beyond that curve to the right of this video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-54wpIwqbqSs.html

Aha. I'm in 8 weeks in a year long traindriver education in Sweden and we have "meter" as standard here. And the rating at our incline signs are in 1000% so 8 in climbing would be an angel on 0,8% over 1000 meters. Our teacher said that our steepest inclines in Sweden is 30 so that's 3% if I understand it correctly. If your interested you can se our Swedish signs here, just scroll forward to page 95"www.transportstyrelsen.se/globalassets/global/regler/jarnvag/jtf/bilaga-3_h-signaler-system-h_rattad-version.pdf" or here is a photo of a very old incline sign "jvgfoto.se/bild/00003786/" Thanks for your replies sir, much appreciated. Awesome camera angel you got on the second clip. Really amazing the power do pull all that weight uphill in bends :)

how much traffic is on this route these days?
@travelingtom923
@travelingtom923 7 лет назад
Not much. Maybe 6 trains a day including the two Amtrak. Coal trains will not be running this route in the next year or two as the two coal mines they service are closing. Traffic at its peak on this route was around 40 trains a day. Both UP and BNSF freight trains are sporadic, and they are talking about running the freights through Wyoming to get to Utah. In a few years this route might be a bicycle trail. Hard to tell the future of the Moffat.
