Trains on the eastern half of the BNSF Needles Subdivision in October 2019 at several locations between Needles and the summit of Ash Hill, including Goffs Hill, Goffs, Amboy and the east slope of Ash Hill. Great mountainous desert scenery, clear skies and hard working trains on some reasonably challenging gradients! Plus a bit of bonus footage of a train on the Arizona & California RR which went past while driving from Indio to Needles.
Best viewed on a large screen in 4k or HD - some of the locations are quite 'cinematic', and hopefully the sound does it justice too.
The line climbs from an elevation of 488ft at Needles to 2600ft at Goffs in 32 miles (ruling gradient of 1.5% on Main 1, I think), then descends to 620ft at Amboy over 50 miles, then climbs again to 1960ft at the summit of Ash Hill over 26 miles (ruling gradient of 1.5% on Main 1, 2.2% on Main 2, I think). This is a good site for more information on the route - www.trainweb.org/brettrw/maps/...
