This song makes way less sense if you haven't seen every other song from the special, because a lot of the lines are direct callbacks. Especially the burning house bit, which is a callback to the first real song of the special "Comedy". There is a proper video up of Comedy that someone posted (Not Bo) which may be worth a watch just to make those lines make more sense. I do highly recommend watching the whole special at some point though.

Comedy is one of my favorite songs from the special. He missed the references to that. I would love to see the reaction to that.

You are right on one hand, but it was even more exciting how Suffi would interpret some of the lyrics without knowing those lines from previous songs. So I would watch another reaction of this song after he HAS seen the whole special.
@amyjanef
@amyjanef 2 года назад
I think it's actually good that he hasn't because it means he's actually ANALYSING the lines for what they are rather than just saying, oh that's a call back, and that being the end of it. While it would be great if he knew that and worked that in to his interpretation, it's not (and should never be) essential for understanding a text.
@QuibbleTrouble
@QuibbleTrouble 2 года назад
@@amyjanef I think in the case of the Comedy callbacks it is actually essential, because it's directly reversing the message of the Comedy lyrics for its effect. Without that context Suffi zeroed in on the burning house itself, which is already established in Comedy as all the problems of the world.
@glygriffe
@glygriffe 2 года назад
@@QuibbleTrouble On the other hand, Bo Burnham is known for having multiple meaning to a lyric. The house full of smoke could easily be something else then "all the problems of the world" (I know that it is all encompassing, but you get the gist).

"Weve got you surrounded" might be a callback to his panic attacks in the past - the feeling of being in the center and having no way out

It's a callback to "Look Who's Inside Again" from earlier in the special
@BartimaeusTrilogyFan
@BartimaeusTrilogyFan 2 года назад
I think it's that, yeah, personally. A house full of smoke is Bo at rock bottom. He tells the audience when he's at his lowest, call him up and tell him a joke. Then that takes a turn, the phrasing of "you're really joking at a time like this" is incredulous. He turns to look at the audience as he says it, his tone mild but defensive, like the audience is mocking his struggle by taking humor from it. He confronts his own point of view in "Comedy" earlier in the special, humor isn't enough to dig him out of his own emotional turmoil. THEN you're hit with the reprise of "Look who's inside again." The spotlight focuses on him unexpectedly, he is naked and vulnerable and flinches away but it is unyielding, moving closer and closer, it almost feels claustrophobic. The voice is multilayered and cold, and what before was self-mockery is now coming from something else. And that something has him surrounded. imo It's a great representation of your own... hm. It has multiple layers? On the one hand, it's a great representation of Bo as a creator in the public eye. That he relies on his audience but they can turn on him, or that their adoration isn't enough for him as he may have expected. The pressure having an audience exerts, and how it reveals everything, leaves him vulnerable. On the other hand, it's a great representation of anxiety and the inner turmoil you feel going through it. Earlier in the special, when the tone was more humorous and Bo more energetic, his POV (even if ironic) was that humor can dig you out of dark moments, that it has its place even when you're stuck inside. But suddenly he's the one at that low, and humor doesn't help. It mocks what he's going through, he resents it. That robotic chorus feels almost like an embodiment of anxiety itself. The self-mockery, the creeping pressure, the fear and how it picks apart every part of you, leaving you bare and hopeless. God, I love this special so much.

I thought so to. He says right before that ' come out with your hands up' which I thought was a reference to the hands up song where he also talked about his mental health.

It's been a while since you reacted to other parts of the special, so definitely can be forgiven for not spotting that this song contains numerous call-backs to other songs in the special, often with the words slightly changed. For example: 'tell a joke, when no one's laughing in the background', 'should I (changed to 'you') be joking at a time like this', and 'house is full of smoke, I'll call you up (changing to 'call me up') and I'll tell you a joke', are from Comedy, a song at the beginning. The words seem to be switched out this time to be turning the whole thing back on the audience. In Comedy, he seems to be optimistic and arrogant (he's going to heal the world with comedy), but as the special goes on he loses that optimism. At the end it's 'call me up' = heal me. It's a very clever song with a lot of layers.

I love the callbacks to other songs, “welcome to the internet”, “comedy”, “look who’s inside again” etc and if you haven’t seen the whole special this song is less impressive on its own. It’s very similar to a musical’s final song that incorporates everything we’ve seen so far.

Not sure if you noticed "a little bit of everything all of the time apathy is a tragedy and boredom is a crime" (7:12) is a callback to Welcome to the internet, while the "if I wake up in a house that's full of smoke.." to "..when I'm fully irrelevant and totally broken call me up and tell a joke" (7:32) is a reprise from Comedy, the first song of the special, including the final part of "you're really joking at a time like this". The burning part was him saying that people being in a burning house (which is about racism if you ask me, but could be even just literal or a general " bad situation") don't need you to tell them a joke that won't solve their problems, but in this version is him who asks you to tell him a joke, almost as a way to say that comedy at the very least has helped him, saved him, even if it won't solve world problems. There are subtle references all over this song but it's hard to catch everything if not watching after the whole special

Hey man. I just wanna first say I appreciate you. The way that you analyze things and the introspection and objectivity you bring to how you break something down, it's a rarity to see someone who gives a shit for the sake of giving a shit or just discussing it honestly. Especially when I may disagree with you on an interpretation of something it makes me look into your interpretation or argument much more closely. I'd also strongly recommend if you haven't already, watch the special start to finish and then look back at the conclusions you've drawn from the songs on their own. It's interesting for me to see you react to them individually without the context of having seen the special as a whole because I feel like there is so much that you're both drawing just from his songs, but also missing from seeing it all in sequence. Not a complaint for the record, it's engaging as hell and I feel the same way you do about a ton of it. I'd just love to see your thought process about all of it with the full context. Keep doing your thing man, you're underrated as shit. (also please ignore if you have already seen the special lol)

This is absolutely my favorite song on the album with all the little callbacks and closing the loop on everything you have just witnessed. I really appreciate your analysis on this one and the other one you posted today on Patreon. It's almost painful to watch people react to songs that require so much context of the whole special, not as a criticism, but because I feel so terrible that your job does not allow you to experience it all at once, as a whole. And when you finally do go back and watch the whole thing, much of it will have been "spoiled" for you ahead of time. And that makes me incredibly sad.

“Come out with your hands up; we’ve got you surrounded” makes me think of the line “Apathy’s a tragedy and boredom is a crime.” I think at the end, regardless of all the effort he had put into it, he found himself bored. Totally exposed and he still felt guilty and broken. Bo has the exceedingly rare ability to wear a specific emotion like an outfit, but stripped down and raw, he feels like he’s doing something wrong and that if anyone saw him that way, they’d take him away & lock him up

I think the line about telling a joke when no one's laughing is more about how surreal it is performing to a camera rather than an audience. He talks about it throughout the special a bit. With an audience he has immediate feedback on whether the material is funny, but alone in a room he just has to make it and hope it will pay off.

the last line "well, well, look who's inside again. went out to look for a reason to hide again. well, well buddy you found it. now come out with your hands up we've got you surrounded" is a call back to a previous song in the special "Look Who's Inside Again". my interpretation of that is people mocking him, referencing his youtube days when he filmed in his room. now that everyone is INSIDE there is no reason for him not to release anything, so they are wanting more content from him.

"Hey here's a fun idea, how bout I sit on the couch and I watch you next time?" This is a callback to a bit earlier when he makes fun of reaction videos. He reacts to one of his own songs and breaks it down, but it ends up looping so then he reacts to his reaction. First he calls himself pretentious for thinking every one of his songs has to have some deeper meaning when the one he's commenting on is just a stupid song (his words). Then the video loops, and he hears himself call himself pretentious, and he says "that's actually just a defense mechanism, I'm self conscious that that's what others are saying about me so I think that if I levy that criticism against myself first it makes it better. But it doesn't, self awareness doesn't absolve anyone of anything." So him saying this is him jumping in front of the mob that he's anxious about. He's worried people will say this isn't funny or this isn't good or whatever criticism they'll throw at him. So he has his response pre-planned. It's just a (self-aware) defense mechanism.

If I wake up in a house that's full of smoke I’ll panic, so call me up and tell me a joke I just had a thought - I think this house full of smoke could be referencing an analogy that author David Foster Wallace made about the relationship between depression and suicide. “The so-called ‘psychotically depressed’ person who tries to kill themselves doesn’t do so out of quote ‘hopelessness’ or any abstract conviction that life’s assets and debits do not square. And surely not because death seems suddenly appealing. The person in whom its invisible agony reaches a certain unendurable level will kill themselves the same way a trapped person will eventually jump from the window of a burning high-rise. Make no mistake about people who leap from burning windows. Their terror of falling from a great height is still just as great as it would be for you or me standing speculatively at the same window just checking out the view; i.e. the fear of falling remains a constant. The variable here is the other terror, the fire’s flames: when the flames get close enough, falling to death becomes the slightly less terrible of two terrors. It’s not desiring the fall; it’s terror of the flames. And yet nobody down on the sidewalk, looking up and yelling ‘Don’t!’ and ‘Hang on!’, can understand the jump. Not really. You’d have to have personally been trapped and felt the flames to really understand a terror way beyond falling.” I know for a fact that Bo has read Wallace’s work, so I’m pretty sure he’d be familiar with this quote. Eventually, the burning building became too much to bear. Wallace hung himself from his rafters in 2008.

First of all, I watch you, and I really like your reactions. This one seems excessively paused and it it's frustrating since we're here to see you.

You need to react to "Comedy" from this special.

I like "Goodbye" too. It's a personal favorite of mine from the "Inside" album. I think you might also enjoy this video I made combining the song with clips from Bo's show "Zach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous": ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iyqYtC7saDM.html

the whole song is a callback on the whole show while also talking about his panic attacks and wanting to do comedy again but he cant

You misinterpret a lot if stuff simply because you haven't watched Inside from beginning to end in order. For example several of the things in this song were direct callbacks to songs earlier in the special but the only one you seemed to grasp was the part that comes from Welcome To The Internet.

I kinda feel bad for you putting in effort to make a good video about this song but not having seen the special. What this song means doesn't require any guessing or interpretation if you watch it in the context of the special really. Which is not a knock on you at all, I enjoy your videos. I think once you finally watch the actual special though you'll have much more firm ideas about this song. Mostly it's just that this song really is not meant to be a stand-alone song.

Probably already a comment but I'm not gonna scroll for it. But when he says "put your hands up we have you surrounded" is the peer pressure from society basically telling him we loved it now shut up and stop being insecure cause we need you to come out and make more content

i love all Bo’s content…..but if it’s bad for his mental health….or if he’s bitter he’s making content and we’re not…then do something else dude….change your path so you can avoid being miserable….or figure out how to enjoy it. Some people will not like what you produce….but many will love it, embrace those people and ignore the others. There’s always going to be the haters, they’re a waste of time. i really do like knowing he’s miserable just to have fun some of the time. watch the movie amadeous, Mozart was writing beautiful music, but was also miserable, was too insecure about the response…but like Bo knew his content was great. We all feel this in our lives, you have to believe in you and accept there will always be crtitics, who 100% couldn’t produce this content!
