I dont the audience were necessarily laughing at his pain though. I think they sympathised with him and it resonated with them. They laughed and cheered because of how well he performed. @@Natlatify he talked about it in his last special. He wants to please them. Even though he’s unhappy, he still wants to give them the night out they deserve and put on a good performance. I see what you’re saying, but the audience is laughing at him because he doesn’t want to be in the spotlight, and struggles to go back inside to where he’s comfortable. He put a laughtrack throughout the special at weird times as an example since audiences always laugh at the wrong times. You see it through all of his specials. Although it pains him, he’ll do it to put on a good show and make others happy. He attempts to give them what he can’t give himself.

If you watch him think and hear him speak it’s like he’s so intelligent that he’s struggling to find ways to express himself that others will understand. Perhaps the song wasn’t intentionally written to be that deep but it doesn’t matter. People saw it that way and it moved them and that was his purpose behind it. Otherwise the entire song would’ve been a joke with no serious elements in it. This song resonates with people on a profound level and I don’t believe that was an accident or freak coincidence. Just my two cents.

He started on RU-vid a long time ago and ended up making a special with his material titled “Words, Words, Words”. I think that was around like 2010, I first saw it on Netflix. Now it’s on RU-vid for rent/purchase. Then he did “what.” a couple years later, “Make Happy” a couple years after that then went on a hiatus. In his 2021 Netflix special “Inside”, he filmed, edited and produced a special all on his own in his room. This took place over the course of a year. In “Inside”, he reflects heavily on mental health, social media, and the effects of quarantine. He also explains that he quit performing for about 5 years because his mental health was in a bad spot. In comparison to his other specials, it’s a lot more of a serious piece. He’s always stuck to being a musical comic and he really manages to create unique and beautiful content that can make you laugh and think at the same time. I hope this comment provides a bit of insight into Bo. Your reactions have been spot on and I highly encourage you to react to more Bo content. Also worth mentioning that his hiatus was from performing in front of audiences, but he still did some work during the last few years - especially that he directed his first movie Eighth Grade, which touched on a lot of the same issues he talks about around growing up in the internet and social media age on screen. It won awards. He's also acted in a few movies. I'm loving this channel! There's a ton of surface level reaction channels these days that only discuss the obvious, so I appreciate how you dig a little deeper to offer real insight. Excellent work man! ❤️ I'd love to see you react to some of the bits in A Black Lady Sketch Show- it's the funniest thing I've seen since MadTVs golden age

Great responses and I liked that your breaks to interject were not pointless feedback like "funny" or "so true", you actually gave insight into parallels between this and Kanye's rant, and expanding on points.

BRO THANK YOU I’ve been waiting for a Kanye fan to react to this video cuz there’s so many things that only Kanye fans would get in his performance like the runaway instrumental or how on the nose it is topically and how they are so similar with mental health issues

Like many, I found you looking for authenticate Bo reactions, but I've found so much more than that. I appreciate you because you don't just laugh because everyone is laughing. You laugh when you get it. Like the sweater bit -- that was hilarious, but it was a reference to a video editor joke earlier in the special, but I digress. You've earned a sub, man. Can't wait to catch up with your content!

I want everyone to feel happy and laugh with this instead of feeling sad. Yes it was before he went on hiatus- but you can tell he tried his hardest to please everyone. I’m sure he’d like people to laugh with him instead of dwelling on his problems. We support him as his fans!!

He *just* released a new special at the beginning of the month called "Inside" that he produced by himself, inside his house, during the pandemic. It's astounding. I really relate to the way Bo Burnham expresses his feelings of anxiety and inferiority through insightful comedy. He's probably my favorite living comedian.

What I love about this song is that the Pringle and Burrito lines are subtle metaphors for him trying to keep his mental health together while on stage but his hands are tied because he felt he owed his fans a performance. Looking back 6 years later his face as he drops the mic is him saying I quit and nobody knew it.

He'd been suffering from anxiety and severe panic attacks for years. During that "Make Happy" tour (where this song came from and was in fact the last song of the special), he'd had several really bad attacks before, during and after some performances, even breaking down in tears after a few of them. He knew he needed to take a serious break and get some help, which he did. He stopped performing live for five years. He didn't stay inside during that time though. He directed comedy specials for other comedians, worked on several projects including directing a feature film called "Eighth Grade" and continued to work. "Inside" was the product of a solid year's work in his guest house where he wrote all of the material, performed and recorded all of the music, edited all of the videos and did it all without an audience thanks to Covid. But yeah, the "I hope you're happy" line definitely was a commentary to the audience regarding his mental issues and their need to be entertained. He knew that and still was somehow blaming them (along with himself) for his issues. He did his best to perform for them but he also knew he had to make some much needed changes in his life in order to deal with them.

Your reactions to Bo’s stuff is astounding. One of the only reactors I’ve seen that gives substance and not just a reaction. Love it. To answer your question yes, this was when he took his 5 year hiatus. After saying “I don’t think that I can handle this right now” the last lyrics he says are “Handle this, I’ll handle this, handle this right now.” “Thank you, I hope you’re happy.” Then leaves. I interpreted that as his way of handling the situation and taking a break from comedy.

Not only is it the last special before he quit performing between this and this years inside... but after the whole live concert the kinda “pre-credit” outro song isn’t recorded at the show, but is just him playing piano in the exact same room that inside was made in. I’m sure he had no idea he was gonna even thallus make inside 5 years later, but it works so seamlessly, it kinda blows my mind.

Jesus, no one broke this down as well as you. Genuinely impressed. Also, I loved this special but there was some genuine worry as well. I know his new special is incredible, but I'm glad he took the time off he did for his own benefit, and if the lockdown messed that up, I hope he takes even more time. Even if he never performs again, it's just good to have a world with Bo in it.

Just started watching Bo Burnham reaction videos today and as great as people do, you almost have to watch his stuff in order to fully (well as much as Bo let’s us know) GET what he’s saying and feeling in his songs. Even then, we really truly don’t even know the half of it, but it seems like as time goes on, and “what he does or doesn’t do next” help make his lyrics become transparent. I’m not a Bo stalker, I just like listening to his songs and find them pretty relatable. And yes, this is the last show he references in “all eyes on me”.

Watch his first special "what." Also a deep and thoughtful ending. Up until "Inside" was released, "Make Happy" was my favorite special. IIRC the burrito acts as a metaphor for his life. Had he known how overwhelming and fast the responsibilities of fans would be he wouldn't have pursued it the way he did. Bo Burnham is the tortilla.

Guy above me's actually right, Bo was asked in an interview what the burrito and Pringle can were meant to be a metaphor for, and Bo revealed they were just supposed to be funny so the audience wouldn't think the song would take the dark turn it took, and he wishes he had come up with a deeper meaning because of how well-received the song was to his fans

@@ryantalley5284 His stuff seems super deep because of his mental health struggles, but most of it is still just comedy. That's not to say he doesn't make jokes and metaphors about it. But it's usually not as deep as most people think lol

Man, I'm so happy you are doing this. You are what the cosby show did for people in the 70s. These reaction videos help people realize that we are all ONE PEOPLE; ONE FAMILY. The ugly things about cosby(the person) aside, the show made us realize that we aren't so different. Same with family matters and malcom in the 90s(TGIF!!), for me it was a window into a world I didn't know, but I saw that it was, at the bottom, just like ME. Now for me, I have cousins are half black, and my uncle larry was a black dude from Mississippi and he was a role model - but a lot of people don't have that experience and they feel separate and weird about people different from them. What you do, on the deepest level, is let people know that we are ALL the same. One family. One Nation. And we need that more than anything right now brother. Thank you.

Yessir. That was his last special before he went on hiatus. He was slowly declining over time leading up to this, leading up to him taking 5 years off before he started planning Inside. But then COVID hit and he had to do it all himself. So he kind of backslid. The man is a real one, honestly.

Thanks for making this video! I fuckin love Bo Burnham. I used to listen to this song, and a handful of others, back in December of 2016 and January/February of 2017 when I was suicidal and struggling with a lot of mental health problems. This song was one of the things that kept me going until I was able to make changes in my life that led to my situation and mental health improving. I wouldn't have known how much influence Kanye had on that precarious/vulnerable point in my life if I didn't see this and have you point out how much this song paralleled some of Kanye West's performances. I think that's pretty rad. :) Bo recently released a Netflix special called "Inside" and the whole thing is incredible. It is a beautiful, raw, real, self-aware, honest, and has genuine social commentary woven into the comedy. It gives me all the feels. I would like seeing you react to any of those songs/sketches. :) Edit* I see now, immediately after writing my comment, that you've made at least one reaction to something from Inside and I'm hyped to watch. :)
