Bo La Lot (Vietnamese Grilled Beef in Betel Leaves)

Bo La Lot or Vietnamese Grilled Beef in Betel Leaves is a very popular street food in Vietnam. It can be eaten wrapped in rice paper with veggies as an appetizer or in a vermicelli noodle bowl. I love it both ways! It can be made in large batches and kept frozen as well
Serving size: Approx. 50 pieces
Ingredients: Wild Betel leaves (commonly found in Asian markets)
The filling:
1 lb ground beef (80% lean 20% fat)
5 tbsp crunchy peanut butter
1/4 cup minced red onions
1 tbsp minced garlic
1 tsp mushroom seasoning
1 tsp salt
1 tbsp soy sauce
2 tbsp sesame oil
1 tbsp oyster sauce
Onion Oil:
5 green onions chopped
2 tbsp vegetable oil
1 tbsp minced garlic
Fish Sauce Dressing (nuoc mam)
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup fish sauce
1 tbsp minced garlic
1 tsp chili garlic sauce or you can use fresh chili
1 tsp lime juice
Mix it all together and stir until sugar is dissolved. Store in the refrigerator.
Instructions:
1. Mix up all the ingredients for the filling together in a bowl
2. Face betel leave glossy side down and add about 1 tbsp of the filling
3. Roll up the leave starting at the pointy tip and poke a hole using a toothpick or skewer then insert the stem in the hole to secure then place on a. skewer
4. Grill it!
5. Plate it and top it with the onion oil and some crushed roasted peanuts
Vermicelli noodles, lettuce, cucumbers, mint and fried shallots go well with bo la lot. You can wrap them all up together in a rice paper or make a noodle bowl. Make sure you have fish sauce to dip or dress over noodle bowl.
