The 200 had longer legs but this 100 series did the job in fine style ...Qantas and BA couldn't wait to get away from the JT9D with its initial and ongoing reliably issues. The first 747-100s were built with six upper deck windows (three per side) to accommodate upstairs lounge areas. Later, as airlines began to use the upper deck for premium passenger seating instead of lounge space, Boeing offered a ten-window upper deck as an option. Some early -100s were retrofitted with the new configuration

I flew on one of these BOAC 747's in 1973 London to Australia. I was quite young but I remember it refueled in Beirut now Lebanon. It stopped in Australia after this Perth I think or maybe Darwin to refuel once again and then onto the final destination Sydney. Quite interesting to note the number of refueling stops as today they seem to able to stay in the air alot longer. I think it must have been a series 100 and lucky enough I was shown around the cockpit at cruising altitude which you wouldnt get today. All analogue gauges back then and a flight engineer as well.

In the days when there was only the Boeing 747-200, LHR-SYD would probably have been LHR-DEL-SIN-SYD or LHR-BEY-SIN-SYD. Just the Delhi-Sydney leg is 6,476 miles, so DEL-SIN-SYD for the latter leg would have been common. The idea behind multiple stops was mainly to ensure safe operation, as headwinds along the route would often reduce range; 5000 miles back in the 1970s was considered a long-range route and most nonstops with 4-holers were shorter than this. LHR-SIN is too long even for the 747SP, so if this model was used LHR-BEY-SIN-SYD or LHR-DEL-SIN-SYD would have been needed. Once the 747-400 was acquired LHR-SIN-SYD was possible and for a long time now has been the typical route for London Heathrow to Sydney Kingsford Smith. Some flights, when loaded lightly enough could manage the 10,000+ miles of LHR-SYD nonstop. The Boeing 777-200LR and 787 can do LHR-SYD nonstop, at least if there are no headwinds for significant portions of the route and the aircraft is loaded below max capacity. The 747-8 can also do it if loaded in a 3-class pax configuration to put its capacity below 400 passengers.

What has polar route to Japan got to do with this video of the first 747 flight to Australia? A stopover is a deliberate break of journey. A flight does not have stopovers. It has re-fuelling stops of short duration, probably around an hour or so. If the passengers chose to disembark and have a stopover in Anchorage then obviously their journey would take longer. However, for passengers who did not so choose the polar route flight to Japan was quicker than the traditional route via the far east, The quickest route to Japan (Tokyo) was however the trans Siberian route with a refuelling stop in Moscow which was also flown in that era.
