In this episode we've sabotaged the board with symptoms similar to common liquid damage. It's currently stone dead. Let's investigate how we measure the critical power rails and restore them.

@@pavulzavala9412 I know and Rossmann is great too but I feel like this guy slows it down in way to actually understand what it is doing. Rossmann is like here we have a macbook and I will only show you what you need and skips stuff and assumes we don't need to know it in more detail but we kinda do lol.

Excellent series of board repair. I like it so much. Just one remark about the U6990. It is LT3470 and it is a buck converter but a low power one (only 200mA according to datasheet) therefore the switching transistor is part of the chip and therefore we don't see any external transistor.

@3:00 ... you decide where to test PPBUS_G3H. ..... C7330 + C7331 and said it's made easier bc: They're both big PPBUS_G3H points ... AND Bc both _go to ground on the other side._ (which I'm not contesting!) ..lol But I am CURIOUS! What notation says they go to ground on a schematic!? Thanks! :)
@Adamant_IT
@Adamant_IT 3 года назад
While on the boardview, when I hover over the pins it shows me what they connect to. At exactly 3:03 we can see that C7330 pin 2 is marked GND (ground). I didn't make that very clear though! The schematic would've shown it more clearly if I'd switched over to it. It's also worth noting that the vast majority of capacitors are power related and connect to ground as well, so it's a reasonable assumption that any given cap probably has ground on one side.

its called an "open" or open circuit. some techs would start at the resistor or fuse, from the magsafe connection, then work towards the buck Xverters, power distribution circuits, etc, great teaching! also, do you use/have a magnifier (like a USB microscope) or use an ultrasonic cleaner? the resistor could look intact, but be burned inside. thanks for having me as a student!
@Adamant_IT
@Adamant_IT 4 года назад
I use naked eye for the most part, but I've got pretty good near-sight. Ultrasonic cleaner I want, but I don't do enough board repair these days to justify the cost!
@j.lietka9406
@j.lietka9406 4 года назад
Adamant IT a good 99% rubbing alcohol brush down is sufficient? thanks..yeah, a suitable sized ultrasonic cleaner is a bit high $$ but a good investment. 😃 also, do you have a laptop battery rebuild video? thanks
@Adamant_IT
@Adamant_IT 4 года назад
Yea alcohol works well enough for me. Ultrasonic might save a liquid damaged board without you even looking at it though, so that's when they can pay for themselves. I have a LiPo series about tearing down batteries, but I don't have any battery rebuild videos yet, I generally replace them.

Sorry, I don't get it. When tracing down the problem, some of the components did not get any power. What was the multimeter reading then? Thought it's supposed to stay at 0. However it was all over the place, so I don't know when I have voltage and when I don't.

You seem to be just fixing stuff via your naked eye. Do you ever use anything with magnification? I'd struggle to see anything without some kind of scope/screen.
@Adamant_IT
@Adamant_IT 2 года назад
Yea I need to get myself a microscope really, but scopes make it a lot harder to get really nice camera shots of the work. Most cameras that are looking through the scope give a very narrow field of view that I find makes it hard to show the context. I found myself looking at videos and thinking "ok he's soldering that bit, but what is that? What am I looking at here?"
@MrRawUK
@MrRawUK 2 года назад
@@Adamant_IT thanks for the reply. I saw you did a series of videos on how to. I wish i did all this in the late 90s when i was fixing stuff 6 days a week but it was often more time efficient to replace the boards. I worked for Dell on site and nobody every fixed stuff. Simply remove main board etc.Back in the early 90's it was common to fix boards then though as prices were so high and it was just more normal.

@EdolFamvlog
@EdolFamvlog 2 года назад
how about another brand off laptop, is there all so ppbus_g3h and ppv3v42?
@Adamant_IT
@Adamant_IT 2 года назад
There's always an equivalent of a ppbus_g3h, which is usually just charger voltage (19.5v) going through to the secondary power supplies. PC laptops always run 5v and 3.3v rails, which are also usually Always Hot (with exceptions). The nearest equivalent to the SMC and pp3v42 is the EC (embedded controller) which usually has it's own small 3v supply, but generally you don't go anywhere near that unless you're into very high-end repair work. Most PC laptop board faults are short on the main power rail (dead capacitor somewhere) or a corrupted BIOS.

How do you know which pins are output and input is it indicated in the schematic?
@Adamant_IT
@Adamant_IT 3 года назад
Yea, there's a couple of give-aways in the schematics. Power generally flows left to right on the page, so incoming power comes from the left, and outgoing power exits to the right. Then signals usually have an arrow on them to indicate if it's a signal in or out.

A 'hot' line means that it's always on as long as a power source is connected. Even when the laptop is 'off' a 'hot' rail will still be powered up, there's just no current draw on it until the system turns on.
