Live cover "Olson" by Boards of Canada (from Music Has the Right to Children)
I think I finally perfected my cover of Olson. Took me a long time to get the synths and effects dialed in, but I think I did a decent job of capturing the spirit of the original track. Enjoy!

wich preset are you using? it sounds exactly like the album version!

It wasn’t a preset, just used a filtered pulse wave oscillator (the square wave but then adjusted the shape setting). I recreated the patch a lot better though on Diva. You can view the settings in this other video I made! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kZO-P6cYoFQ.html

You really did well with this cover! Thanks for sharing! What you can learn out of this is that you can never have enough LFOs ;D Modulation is key for ambient. I love that washed out sound, but sadly I can't afford a real tape machine. Maybe i'm getting a Strymon el capistan soon. I'm never satisfied with these plug-in tape effects in my DAW.

Thanks! Yeah totally. The key to these patches were for sure all the LFOs. Without them they’d just be boring. You could try find a cheap tape machine, even a $20 cassette recorder would be cool to add character and warmth. I have a tascam portastudio and I’m in love with it. I agree, there’s a few plugins that are pretty good but you can never fully recreate the real deal.

Can you tell me the notes you played for the piano at the end? I might actually prefer it to the original ending.

Yeah I believe it was mainly just Sus2 chords (or added 9th at the top). So first chord left hand Eb Bb Eb, right hand Bb F. Second chord left hand F C F, right hand C G. Last chord, just a C major, left hand C G C, right hand G with a D stepping up to E. I think the original plays similar notes just an octave lower, and the second chord is an actual F major not sus.

Matt Harris the patch itself is very simple, it’s just straight sawtooth waves. The key though is in the effects. I used many lfos with varying speeds to control the filter cutoff, volume, and pitch. Also distortion is what made it finally sound close to the original. I used camel crusher.

Great work, sounds just like it... Minilouge is used for lead/ which synth is used for the multiple saw /lfo chords as you described? nice cover! 👏🏻

Thanks! I just used Abletons Wavetable for that. The synth patch itself was super simple, literally just straight saw waves, it’s all in the effects/lfos
