This is the way 16mm would back in the 70's (not including the sprocket and soundtrack areas, natch), before VHS and Beta dubs of films became the norm- Sharp, rich colors and good definition. Cheers to them for not employing the tired, fake "TV/tape filter" with After Effects that looks nothing like old tape or TV.
Its a ARG video by the band Boards of Canada, who are beloved by many people. Their persona is cryptic with themes of nostalgia. For years nothing has been heard from them until only a couple of weeks ago when a mysterious 12" was found in a record store. This lead to an "alternate reality game" which was in keeping with the band’s mysterious persona. Cryptic clues like this video all aided in uncovering a secret code that revealed the release date to their new album. Fans like me are ecstatic
I literally have goosebumps all over my body. I had all but given up hope and then out of nowhere BoC is like, "Oh, here's an album for you." Boards of Canada has been the soundtrack to my life over the last 5 years. And the way they went about revealing is nothing short of perfect.
Daft Punk releases a couple seconds of music and makes you feel like you're at a disco party, Boards of Canada releases a couple seconds of music and makes you feel like your soul is crushing. Cannot WAIT to hear what's coming from these guys..
In an age where we have lost the anticipation in new music, I think BoC are doing something really revolutionary here. Releasing the 12" records secretly around the world, then giving off tiny hints in a very audio/visual manner in other media, is allowing the band to continue the mysterious allure that we have come to expect from them. Can't wait for new music from them!
everone. who else noticed the man on the building at 0:31? there is some weird shit in their single from this album. theres a reflection of a guy falling and popping back up in the broken glass and a couple rocks that look like faces, they look like they was carved like that.
Death Grips did something similar with their release of No Love Deep Web. IT was really fun watching it all play out :). This BoC ARG is much more widespread though, making it more fun IMO.
This. Most bands can't do something like this because they often don't have the acclaim and fans. Boards of Canada are hugely popular and everything they do is highly anticipated. That's why something like this can flourish.
And here I thought it was another "Marble Hornets" video entry, until I saw the Boards of Canada logo. Looks like I was wrong. Are any of you familiar with the "Marble Hornets" video entries? Because is about the Slender Man, obviously. The "Marble Hornets" videos would go great with the music and the fan-made videos of Boards of Canada.
look for more info on the stuff BoC have been doing lately. you'll get the relevance of this. the rundown is that there's a few other number sequences like this one that are being released through various means.
Yeah I think the HD is definitely not something to rag about; first time I saw the Dayvan Cowboy vid in HD, even just the first few seconds of flashing textural old film, was amazing. Really gives dimension to the textural quality of the film.
They are "Re-enchanting" something that had clearly lost of it's magic with actual quick diffusion mediums. An album that don't leak 2 month before it's out.
I think the comparison's probably been drawn (too lazy to read comments) to Daft Punk - building anticipation, making a stir. But this is a different technique...making it a cypher, laying all these odd little seeds. It's not revolutionary, it's just marketing, but I really like watching it unfold.
