"You are just a peddler and a pimp, sitting in a jail cell". It was nice watching Narcisse finally get stripped of his fake veneer of eloquence and sophistication. Hoover's words were cold and brutal, nowhere for Narcisse to hide.
@@area51ville yep. Hoover fit right in. Just like the likes of Joe Kennedy who used his talents to screw people and steal. None of them took that money and power with them upon death. And none could buy immortality.
@@elreydeoro2310 he was proof our government can have endless hidden cancers that makes life miserable for everyone. Government is full of people like him.
The guy playing Hoover is brilliant. He seems so collected and polite, but you can tell there's this sadistic monster lurking underneath the veneer of civility.
The hypocrite Narcisse giving the big speeches about Libyans and mocking Chalky for being too friendly with Nucky. Then he gets flipped by uncle Sam himself.
yeah narcisse was such a pussy he pranced around high and mighty like a debutant to other brothers and sistas but where was all that Garvey Libiyan shit in this scene
PuFFiN RuFFiN-chalky didn’t want the life anymore when he met daughter Naittkand, that was the point. You’ve probably never been laid in your entire life
3:27 Narcisse whispers: "Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.." which basically means, "There is no need to add to the troubles each day brings".
@covalentbond7933 Seems to me that anyone just resigned to the idea that every new day will bring trouble is cynical. I might be more accurate saying they are "negative" or "pessimistic" maybe "without hope" but "cynical" came to mind first, and I'm still gonna go with that. My father passed last month after a long, good life...Raised with some religion, he told me late in life that he had abandoned it after coming to the conclusion that we are alone in the universe -- there is no god or heaven or angels, or even any extraterrestrial beings...I thought that, too, was brutally cynical. Another friend once told me that he believed that Hell was actually on Earth and that humans had to go through Hell on Earth as a kind of test before they could move on to any heaven. In a similarly negative vein, Swedish film director Ingmar Bergman once said that life was an endless series of humiliations. While I can understand all these concepts and beliefs, and while everyone is entitled to their opinion, personally, I'm not certain I could live with so little hope (and without some faith in something).
Yeah this all reminds me of my father getting muscle down and beat down before my eyes by MY grandfather HIS father.. If anyone has ever seen anything really powerful.. that is a sight to be truly seen just like this scene in so many ways
I love the answer that Narcisse gives when Hoover asks the question, "Who do you think gets to decide what the truth is?", and his response was, "The truth is what those in power wish it to be". Great answer!
Excellent impressions of Manhood, from a time when men's speech was more calculated, thoughtful and weighted. Things said, in that time, actually Mattered and actions had consequence. These days, 50year olds still speak as children do. It's s sad commentary.
It both impresses and unsettles me that it seemed like Hoover knew exactly what Narcisse was going to say that entire time and had an elaborate 1 minute long description of his plans with him in response.
Yes great acting indeed. Both were on point. Too bad Hoover's character didnt get more screen time as the series wound down. Gotta respect JEH - he was probably this country's greatest protector ever. Dont feel like there is anyone like him anymore. As for Narcisse, i despised his character, and couldnt wait for his dirt nap. Though the actor playing him is stellar and I enjoy him.
Indeed the Corrupt are always Corruptible. No matter how pure Narcissie thinks his motives are. He’s open to this type of pressure from the Feds because he’s a criminal. Just like how our Deep State operates today. Blackmail is the currency!
Almost immediately after the civil war people like narcisse started leaching and sabotaging black people with race grifting etc people like Al sharpton Louis Farrakhan are just modern iterations of narcisse
I love how the veneer begins to crack at 2:07 with his nervousness on full display. Looking for a way out, touching at his face in extreme discomfort. So satisfying to see Narcisse broken.
"I helped make Mexico, especially Tampico, safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefits of Wall Street. The record of racketeering is long. I helped purify Nicaragua for the international banking house of Brown Brothers in 1909-1912 (where have I heard that name before?). I brought light to the Dominican Republic for American sugar interests in 1916. In China I helped to see to it that Standard Oil went its way unmolested. During those years, I had, as the boys in the back room would say, a swell racket. Looking back on it, I feel that I could have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in three districts. I operated on three continents." - Smedley Butler, Major General, USMC
When Hoover "flipped" Narcisse, I assumed it would carry over into the next season somehow, but it didn't. The show basically went on like this never happened.
I agree. This show got fucked like Deadwood did by HBO. They deserved another 8 episodes. Also another thing like this that seemed to get cut was Willy's storyline. Particularly a romance. If you remember in Willi's first scene in season 5 he sits by the black girl that later is his co worker. The way the actress plays it you would assume they would end up being in love but they weren't given enough time and had to drop the sub plot completely.
I wanted to see if Maggie's boy turned into a psychopath or not. As for Narcisse when Chalky said 'no one's ever been free' and Narcisse turned around with a knowing and affronted look I was reminded of this scene.
It really seemed like they were setting up Hoover to be the biggest villain in the show, which would have been awesome. Instead we got a rushed season 5....
Great acting by both actors. Especially the guy that player Hoover. He sounded polite and intimidating at the same time. He was not gonna waste his time on Nacissie BS stories.
"You entered this country thru the port of New Orleans in 1898, is that correct?" "...I beg your pardon." "Is that correct?" "...Who are you?" "The one asking questions." Hoover commanding the conversation from start to finish.
For 1To put it bluntly.. he had ALOT to lose.. Chalky did not have all that outside Caribbean stuff that the " Dr " was coming from Had he been had been deported they would have been calling him a "worthless deportee" and the people in the whole of the Caribbean Islands would of never found favor to him EVER just like what happened to Marcus Garvey ( Also watch a Jamaican movie called Shottas this same type of theme comes up as well in the movie The theme of being deported is raw and in your face as it squirrely place the viewer as a Jamaican overseas [ foreign ] ) No. 2 Chalky people have mainly come from being in prison or in jail Those was the people he was trying to help Two different really important situations for two different really important people
2:36 Narcisse asks "Why would he do that?" not "Why would *I* do that?" He understands - and subtly indicates - that he's been turned into a fictional character. Hoover could say anything he wishes, and people will believe it, and it doesn't have to have anything to do with the real Narcisse at all.
I just realized that the actor that plays Hoover is the same guy who plays Corporal Chaffin in Generation Kill (a southern Marine Infantryman with an IQ of 30)... The range of performance from these actors is exceptional.
Everyone was convinced he was gonna die, but he wasn't deserving of anything near as honorable as that. Deserves the emmy tho lol...and i thought Gyp was intense.
It would have been a terribly predictable (and quite frankly unsatisfying) fate for him if the writers had him killed in the end. He's such an interesting villain, I honestly think he's the best villain Boardwalk has ever had. I was disappointed he didn't have as much to do this season as I would have liked, but I'm glad he's returning. Really hoping that Hoover plays a bigger role next season as well. I like the idea of the FBI becoming a major antagonists in the show.
this was one of the best scenes maybe arguably top 3, its such a shame it ended here, i really wanted to see more of hoover an the bureau start to influencing their power
Hoover acknowledged that Garvey is a great man / a threat but he also let Narcisse know he sees through his act and knows hes a phony, being the smartest man in the room wasn't going to help him here, he let him know that hes an insignificant pawn after trying to big himself up through the whole series as being some sort of freedom fighter.
Garvey was a fuckin con man, just like Narcisse. Hoover is just pretending to agree w him to show how different Narcisse is from Garvey, who he calls a hero
I'm reappreciating Jeffrey Wright (Narcisse) as an actor again, after all this time since Boardwalk. Having had the priviledge of seeing him in both the Hunger Games and Westworld now, the man has a phenomenal range.
The guy who plays Hoover also appears as Betty's brother on Mad Men. Great actor. I love the Matt Weiner/Terry Winter trifecta...Sopranos, Mad Men, and Boardwalk Empire are all so amazing.
Incredible acting from Jeffrey Wright the way Narcisse said " Yes sir " you felt like he would have rather been b!tch smack by Chalky White then bow down to Hoover.
Compare Nucky to Hoover, both men gifted at saying the right thing at the right time. Nucky witty and charming, Hoover direct, calculated and cutting. Here, when Hoover forces Narcisse to call him Sir, it is all about establishing his dominance than perhaps his personal feelings towards race. We saw Nucky on so many occasions say what he needed to say. For example after the shooting at Chalky's warehouse, he gives 2 identical speeches to both groups advocating race and it is obviously no reflection on his personal feelings. A series of Nucky and Hoover clashing, playing a strategic match of chess if you will, would have been pretty epic.
Narcisse should have agreed to Hoovers terms..got out of jail..grabbed every dollar he had & left the place he despised so much. Maybe quitting while you're ahead isn't the same as quitting 😉🙏
Hoover could've killed organized crime in the crib if he wasn't so obsessed with stamping out ideas rather than taking down actual corruption. Then again, if he had tried going after real criminals his bosses would've just gotten rid of him early on - before he became too powerful.
