Ya know, I realize this has got to be super frustrating for you but what an object lesson for all of your viewers on what it takes to be a prudent buyer when the market heats up. The same principles apply whether you are buying an rv, a house or a boat. I know someone who bought a house in a hot market after she’s seen it for 20 mins, she waived the home inspection to be the ‘winning’ bid and it turned out to be a nightmare It really gave me pause, nothing lasts forever, not even hot markets, and I decided to never be so desperate to make a purchase that common sense flys out the window. Happy you are staying the course and prioritizing health ❣️

Seems like the health issues made you determine it what was better to not buy the boat more. Perfectly understandable. As some one else commented, the boat could have been sailed to Guaymas, Mx or Las Cabos, Mx or La Paz, Mx or other marina on the Sea of Cortez if there was not a berth in Ensenada. Also there are marinas in SoCal that have short term berths even if long term berths are not available. That way you could have several weeks to make sure the boat was safe and prepped to sail to Los Cabos / Sea of Cortez. Also they are not the most protected in the world but there are places to anchor in SoCal to wait for a weather window, get familar with the boat, prep the boat for the sail south. You could have anchored in Ensenada.

You two continue to inspire me even when you're NOT on a boat. I know you will resolve your health and boat issues very soon. Please keep your chins up!

So sorry to hear that this boat didn't work out. I really thought you had found it this time! I think you are thinking about it the right way and have the right priorities. Health is most important and hope that all gets resolved Megan. There will be other boats - it will happen!

I find you two the most relatable of any of the channels I watch. Thanks for keeping it real. I can’t believe the saga of finding a boat continues, but like you said, it’s really a first world problem, as frustrating as it may be. Also, just this week I discovered I have basal cell cancer growth on the back of my leg. Because I’ve been following Megan’s journey it was a lot less jarring for me because I had more info than I would’ve had otherwise. So - thank you for sharing such personal info!

Wow...I on your mooring issue, have the boat yard store it. You get to work on it for the 3 months or so. Then launch and take off on your next adventure.

Hopefully you get a positive and final outcome to your health issue. My Mum just went through a very similar issue including a couple of surgeries and is now on the other side of that mountain.

It is still great to hear the complications of boat buying. Take your time and get it right. Hopefully Megan's cancer is fully removed, my sisters bowel cancer as well (all cut out and 3 months of chemo and she seems to have won). Your videos are always great to watch. Simple solution: close the boat with the owner leasing it back for $1. For for the 3 months That way it can legally stay in the slip, have clause giving you as owner full access and leaser limited access

Sorry about your experience. The universe is trying to tell you something. You’ll figure it out and it will be the best it can be. BTW - East Coast is not much better on mooring Cats of any size. It is still a monohull world😁. We sold our Cat and bought a 19’ West Wight Potter now that’s sailing🤣⛵️

Clarity…. And perspective, that’s where you are! It’s just a boat, and who knows, with the owner out of state and still registered under his name, it remains as is. Revisiting the boat when Megan gets the all clear is certainly an option. With the state of the financial uncertainty in the U.S. and the debt ceiling controversy, who can say. Perhaps this is a blessing in disguise, wait and see, get Megan’s health concern looked after! No mountain was climbed looking up. It was looking ahead! There's a similar Outremer in the south Pacific. It would be a sweet victory if that one could be acquired without a hitch. Keep plugging away. There are so many boats, nothing but time and patience.

Would it have been possible to have the boat sailed to another state, country, further from where you are, I understand statistically this would be very inconvenient and you would not be near the boat, but I have know idea just my thoughts, good luck what ever happens the journey your on is fascinating and you still make it interesting, sorry for another loss Megan really pray you get well soon kind regards Pete

Seller didn't want to sell the boat. 90 day closing with an escrow should have been zero issue. They probably won't sell the boat unless they had a backup buyer contract (its hurricane season) so they're still paying monthly docking expenses until boat is sold. Betting it will still be docked on same mooring 90 days later. Make another lower offer after Megan's eye is healed based on principle that boat has lost more value in the interim.

It sounds like you were actually past Acceptance and now moving towards Closing which is the date you were attempting to renegotiate. Given the fact you were likely post-acceptance, did you lose your deposit in escrow? Thanks!

100K just around the corner!!!!! If the seller promised the use of his berth, he didn't deliver, so he owes you the $6K for your expenses, could run this number up if need be, 20 to $30K!!! If the owner doesn't sell right away the slip doesn't come open anyway, a couple decent lawyers and you could do a rent to buy contract, that would solve everything.

And at the same time keeping your eyes peeled for a new (to you) floating home. I am surprised that you didn't look further north for a mooring. You could have had a for-hire capt sail it to Vancouver BC or Seattle or Portland. But you were trying to stay south, that I'm not understanding.

When knowing the reason for you wanting an extension ,especially going into the cost of the inspections believing it had a 3 month extension on the mooring . He must be a real a gem of a person . I'm a lawyer in Australia. What would be wrong with paying say $300,000 for an option to buy the boat for a dollar in thtee months time. Maybe a prepaid lease for three months as well all totalling the agreed purchase price. That way as far as the port authority is concerned it's still the vendors boat. Anyway I hope it is turning out well for Megan.

Just as bad trying to find dock space or moorings all along the east coast PLUS the prices have gotten out of hand.

Reading these comments is truly amazing. SMH. But like you I have bought/sold more boats than I like to admit both in my mind and in reality. And - I am confident you know this story line already - I once bought my (then) dream boat at an unbelievable price, and I once got screwed out of my all time dream boat (still is) at, yes, an unbelievable price. I call it the "brother-in-law deal." In both cases once the "broker" (and I use that term with hesitation), found out the price the "seller" would take via my contract/survey, they effectively killed the deal via several tactics because .. you guessed it - they had another client or relative who wanted the boat. In the first instance, there was a bank involved, and I knew people there of a legal nature who intervened, and the broker ultimately backed down and even paid some compensation to me (i.e., reduced commission) for what would have been deemed interference with contract in that state. Wonderful boat, many happy year cruising her. In the second, I screamed and yelled and threatened every possible avenue of litigation - but they had me over a barrel, like you were with dockage. In my case there was a hurricane looming (seriously, east coaster here) and either I closed and hauled the boat in the face of the storm immediately, or I had to reject the contract because the seller would not act re hurricane, arguing it was my boat. Oy vey. After 24 hours of intense legal wrangling, I had to reject the contract because of an unacceptable action the marina (associated with the "broker") planned to take with the boat w/r/t the haulout (basically pulling a bulkhead to examine ... !?!?) It was clearly rigged and I had to cave. I have since followed up on the boat, and chatted up the bum that bought the boat without his knowing my involvement. Yup, he was a long time resident of the marina and told me he got a very good deal on my dream boat and sold his boat for a killing (double commission for broker?) I still haven't gotten over it TBH. Moral of the story - It's a business, not solely a hobby. You win some, you loose some and ....

Are you implying that you cannot buy a boat unless and until her eye treatment has a favorable outcome? Otherwise, how far away is the nearest port availability? Find it, sail to it and dock it, then fly back to where your doctors are. Fix the eye, then return to the boat.

Would putting the boat on land for the 3 months be a good option? Places to keep the boat moored in the water are probably harder to find than on land. Priority #1 is of course your health. Best wishes to both of you.

Agonizing. In the interest of levity, I propose the following… I’ve had a lot of fun on Sunfish. Since you guys like cats, lash two Sunfish together. Yeah, space would be minimal, speed could be an issue. Yet think of the simplicity! The trans-ocean crossings might be tough though. 🛀🏼

Sorry to hear of Meghan's ongoing health problems. Take your time over the boat. Indeed, in terms of the economic situation, the Fed has pumped vast sums into financial institutions. Just be aware that large boats are currently affordable to a lot more people that would usually be the case. As long as you capital is secure and diversified, taking your time sounds like a wise move, purely on the boat perspective.

This is why it is always better to work with a broker - This should have never happened - also there are other solutions for big cats in Southern California - like deliver the boat south - good luck for the future -

Nick, you could have paid a crew member to to help you sail it to a marina in Mexico (or just pay someone to sail it down there for you) or up in the northside of the Sea of Cortez in Puerto Penasco (where Delos just did their re-fit) where they can do haul outs and work at the marina and then just leave it down there on the hard, while Megan is back home with family getting her eye issue resolved. Then do your refit down there, especially where labor is cheap, trades are cheap, parts still available by shipment within a reasonable time period and condos are cheap to rent and stay in while you refit the boat. Then, once Megan recovers, she can come down together with you or meet you down there while you are overseeing the refit.
