It helps to watch these videos and learn from other's mistakes. He was definitely coming in too hot on the first wave. The waves will form over the bar in the same place every time, because the water has nowhere to go but up. If they stopped behind back line first and then observed for a while, it would be easy to spot the place where the waves break. If he kept the speed a little lower and waited for a wave to start standing up, he cold have followed that wave. It seems like the spot has two wave sets. On the second attempt, he was again supposed to be behind the wave, not in front of it, and it was just lucky that the wave did not pitch like the previous one. I am learning every day, so no judgement. We all make mistakes.

Dude, this should never happen. You are supposed to do some type of home work on the subject before you go to sea. It's to late once you're there. You have the responsibility of other lives. If you didn't grow up with dad teaching you, go do a coast guard course for bar crossings, ask someone you know that's experienced. You can't say she'll be right, cause it's not. You did not say that, but this dude thought it. There is very clear information on the subject, from multiple sources, there is no excuse for piloting a boat like this. I could not believe my eyes.
@goodgame3374
@goodgame3374 2 года назад
Absolutely. Entertainment aside there's a lot of benefit to be had from studying videos of dangerous activities. Kudos to the crew for wearing lifejackets on the crossing because things went pearshaped in only 5 seconds. At 00:12 the line looked a tad to port but ok, then 00:13 to 00:18 the bow turns at the same time as the wave breaks & they're in trouble in the time it takes to say it.

Can I just propose, is it's 4ft or bigger, go to the supermarket and get some fish. I see so many people button off the throttle and trying to ride the wave at which point it's in the hands off the gods. It's dumb luck they made it.

Nevemind the fact you don’t make those attempts in those conditions....boats with a lot of dead rise are more dangerous in surf as they descend the front of a wave and the bow hooks the water and turns uncontrollably. Accounts for almost 80% of all capsizes on bar crossings. If you have to do bar crossings regularly don’t use a boat with steep deadrise forward...should have a flatter bottom with a raised forefoot

When I first watched this clip I said oh he F*&ked up but when I watched it again he didn't. There was no wave to follow. The wave formed right under and behind his boat. Wow what a nightmare situation. He chose a calm time to enter and it changed in seconds. Not sure what else he could of done to prevent that one, excelled through the calm maybe, but you know what they say about hindsight. Good video thanks for sharing..

Yeah that wave when from no swell to breaking in a couple seconds. I think thats were sitting outside the waves and watching them for a few sets helps.
@drdriftsadventures1018
@drdriftsadventures1018 7 лет назад
I have to disagree. He didnt sit back and watch sets and choose one. Than he was going too fast, hence that wave formed under him, if he had off gone slower he would off seen the wave form and than sit on the back off it. He does it again in the second attempt. too fast. His boat has large enough motor to slowly head in and than power at the right time to ride the back off a wave.... Second time he was just lucky that it wasnt as big as first, but his technique is wrong and clearly shows too fast both times...Never sit in front or a wave always sit on its back! Or in his case hit the power and hope u get on the back off the one in front, NEVER turn on a breaking wave!

MsSam Yes it is laying over to starboard, which is making it steer to port because of the bottom shape. This happens by unbalanced load, incorrect trim tab setting or cross wind from starboard. A deep vee hull will yaw suddenly off course when someone moves from one side to the other.

As other's have said but rewording..it may seem intuitive to surf the front of a wave but number one, that wave in the shallows will eventually break and we've all seen what happens when a surfer gets swamped in the big wave. Your boat will be tossed like a salad, uncontrollably. Second even without a breaker, if you lose momentum you drop the bow hard into the water with the wave then overtaking you pushing the bow in harder. Do yourself a favor, find the wave ahead and ride it's back. Trade off is visibility as the wave and your bow ride high but you generally can see because you are above the trough. Troughs are stable but visibility sucks and you ride in the shallowest column of water. Last if you need to turn it's probably also best to do it off the back of that wave - gives you some room before the new oncomer will hit.
