@@WhiteBoyizFresh it says to render assistance if you can do so safely. Maybe that situation no problem for that guy no way to tell. In some people watching other people die is very unpleasant. I've observed, but won't try to psychoanalyize, people take great risk to themselves assisting others in distress, some pretend to not see it and some wave and promise to call someone. I'd say he deserves a well done.

@@russoley8995 video doesn't show how damage occurred. No way for you to tell that. Water isn't pavement, it moves around. It does unpredictable things. You don't want to idle your way through an inlet or over a bar. You can tell from the way he trimmed the bow and sped up he's probably not a 1st timer. Everyone is an expert until they have to scramble up a quick solution then it's somebody else's fault, or equipment failure.

@@ethan5977 yeah, but you don't technically trim a boat up with tabs. "Up" is actually a neutral position as if tabs were not there. Tabs only affect the boat bow down...

Technically you can't trim an inboard bow up with trim tabs. Yes, trim tabs go up and down, but when a trim tab iback in. Fully "up" position it is actually neutral and the boat is running as if no tabs. Trim tabs impact is only to bring the bow down on a boat. Everything else the boat itself does based on the hull. The captain had the tabs in a negative state and gave the boat throttle to raise the bow. A good job (bad at first spearing a wave in following seas) getting back in.

Someone is going to need an UPFRONT ... period!

@@pjcraney maybe?… but assuming that we may as well assume they were hull integrity problems by rot or internal bow damage…didn’t see no bouys and did not see the bow plow under deep enough to do so much damage on topside…I’ve known a damage exactly like this happened to a local boat in heavy seas here ( 25’) it plowed into following seas an what I found out was the cap and hull joint at bow was compromised by loose bolts with no cap rigidity structurally built in…failure on owners upkeep I say….don’t think this vessel in conversation is built like the one I mentioned….but ..who knows??… a lot of boats u cannot easily see the hull cap joint it’s usually under a rail mounding and the nuts are on the inside ( smaller vessels ) with heavy seas or hard use they can get loose…I’d advise boaters to have piece of mind check to see if you boat has them check it if possible ….👍🏼

@@barryiwashita6352 There is nothing in the water there to hit, its 45' to 60' ft in most spots. It is a shipping channel out the inlet, I run that inlet every week. Think there was wood rot and when the bow stuffed it collapsed under water pressure.

She is a custom cold molded hull ( fiberglass over marine ply) that had water ingress/ moisture issues, causing her to become soft and structurally unsound.

Although not a fan of Viking; that looks more like an old glass over wood boat to me.

The Carolina style flare works...just not the way he was running it....should have never rolled off the top of that wave so the bow wouldn't have to take a hit like that.

That’s a quality control issue. The boats in that category are nicknamed battle wagons for a reason. They are designed to be ran hard on the roughest of weather days. Something could have hit, but as uniform as the hole is, somebody didn’t do their job at the factory. The hull failed in between stringers.

Its actually a poor design flaw. It looked good, but it was not capable of withstanding the force of water when stuffing the bow

So these are shiplap hulls- glass over wood. A lot of them are pretty old. It’s not weird to see a boat from the 70s or 80s . If I were to guess at some point water made it into the front end of that boat and rotted the core up front. Could be something as simple as a bad instal on cleat bolts. But that’s not a situation in which that boat should have failed. Those are the situations they’re designed for.

That was no OLD ROTTEN boat. That's a boat that came up from Florida. Happend during The Big Rock Tournament. Big money on the line. Almost 20k to enter. These boys take care of their vessels

Age may or may not have been the issue. Boats are built with differing thickness in the hull.. freeboard is normally much thinner than other places. This boat speared a wave at speed (looks over 25 knots) The way that hull flares and scoops to push water out puts a LOT of force on that area. Equivalent to a car at 30 hitting a wall..

He didn’t hit anything, I watched it happen!

The boat that stuffed wasn't full throttle. He was riding the back of a wave, just as he should've been. Whether he was distracted, tired after fishing all day or what, who knows but he did outrun the wave he was riding, slowly. When he gets his CG in front of the crest is when he drops into the trough and stuffs. It almost looks like he was trying to keep it near the crest to stay dry...and failed horribly

Its a pretty old build. Most likely water got in up top and rotted out some of the wood structure. When the nose buried into the swell it broke loose.

hahaha they prob waited 9 months for boat to be repaired. they prob said never going back to nc.

Looks like he just stuffed it. The old wooden hull just could not take it. Probably had some rot and structural issues.

No sand bar there, he's in the middle of the shipping canal entering Morehead City port, water depth 40-50 feet.

You’re right if they were wood that got wet over time… but resin without properly laid and layered fiberglass under stress is like shattering glass itself….never heard of cold molding before???

Cold mold is awesome when done with epoxy resin and proper glass like knitted fiberglass cloth not woven. Anyone who builds boats knows this. Limited drawback when built correctly. Better ride and buoyancy too.

@johnritter5951 Definitely expensive to operate these beautiful vessels, but I'd bet none of them run on gas. They use a more expensive fuel...called diesel. Slight technicallity... but I share your sentiment.

Instead of the good old "We the people," I began referring to "Whee the people," to poke fun at how much our culture had become a nation of fun-seekers. No wood on the flare, unless it was a glass covered timber hull..... but i doubt it. Just poor glass work

Not captain error. They found a lot of rot up front. The boat was very old, but built by a legend. If fresh water gets to the wood without anyone knowing it will rot.

Thank you for letting me know that. I wasn't sure what had happened to the boat and why it did. I suspected his nose had hit something, and not just simply rotted wood.

You know if you read the comments I can see why some people would be confused about this situation. I mean you either have a stupid boat driver or damn fine seamanship and/or you have old cold molded method rotted wood, too much speed and/or hitting a sand bar. That is a wide range just saying. @@arabiantxn some boat builders have “cored” hull sides. Meaning wood sandwiched between two layers of fiberglass. The wood provides stiffness. All is well until something compromises one of the fiberglass layers and allows water to get in between. Then the wood that was supposed to be providing strength is now rotten. It’s very hard to tell if there’s a problem or not because you can’t see the wood. inside.

I was a charter boat skipper out of Astoria and was interested in going offshore for Yellowfin. I was questioning one of the tuna guys in port about my plans, and the first thing he said was, “If you want to see your kids graduate from college.....get a steel boat.”

Any idea what ever happened to this boat? If it got repaired or what?
