I wear a self inflating jacket like the helicopter crews wear, it is easy to wear and looks cool as well. That Oakville dock incident is just to the west of my marina, I went out into the lake the following day and found a composite plastic Muskoka chair floating in the lake. There are only 6" floating above the water. I dragged it onboard and reunited it with the owner the following Saturday after I put the images in a local Facebook group. It wasn't possible for me to tow the trees in or the three bundled skids of 4x4 timber.

#1 rule on my boat is everybody wears a life jacket when we are underway no matter the conditions, including the dog.

Always great videos!!! Reading the comments about PFD requirements when crossing the bars in AU remind me of times when I was young that I was always required to wear a PFD on my father's boat. This place was rougher than Haulover Inlet.

If you are underway you should have a life jacket on, if you are anchored or drifting they should be Immediately accessible. If you are in rough conditions, no matter what it should be on.

Absolutely wear your PFD. At least if you're traversing a known hazardous piece of water. Then, when it becomes calm again you can take it off, but always keep it close and handy.

Where I live there is an international shipping lane (USA&CAN) and a ferry service in the same channel. The other day two bass fishing boats were anchored in the middle of the channel fishing, and they were flipping off the freighters and ferries as they went by. In NSW Australia, it is mandatory to wear a life jacket when crossing a bar. There is no excuse for not wearing one.

While more aimed at swimmers, this week in Canada it is National Drowning Prevention Week which runs from July 21-27, 2024. Most drownings are 100% preventable. Stop trying to be "cool" and simply wear your PFD. Another way to look at it is to consider who you might not come to. Think about that and put it on.

our basic boat safety course in Aus said a lvl100 jacket must be worn when in these zones. its a legal requirement.

4:10 as an off shore guy. If your far enough off shore, with or with out a "life jacket" it won't matter, life raft and survival suit, or nothing at all😮

Once I discovered auto inflating life jackets I never go on a boat without one. I discovered it while looking for fishing gear. It's a fishing vest with a hidden life jacket. triggered by CO2 or you can keep it blown up yourself if you in the water for a long time. has a hidden wind breaker if you are in the water for long or get on shore in the wind. I bought several they are comfortable enough to wear all day even when river fishing on shore. That's why I used to not wear one they were cumbersome and uncomfortable. Limit movement risks safety for a little security. With the new vests no more problems.

You don't even know you have an inflatable PFD on they are that comfortable. You don't cross the Tweed Bar on a bad day either let alone without a jacket. That's not only stupid it's unlawful, The Tweed is a declared bat and in Australia you are required to wear one for the crossing.

A shame they don't allow the old ski belt type floatation. comfortable and if your conscious they will keep you afloat. Plus they don't block the tanning rays. That boat flipped at night in dangerous conditions, so these were idiots.

My rule is anytime the boat is not anchored all on board wear a life jacket. I don’t want anyone’s death on my conscience.

When the waves are bigger than your boat, wear a vest.

Common Sense just isn't that common... I have been boating as a captain for over 40 years and I wear my very comfortable, auto inflating lifejacket because I have had to attend the burial of too many who did not wear their life jacket in much less dangerous situations.

Hello BG, as always you have your finger on the pulse of the boating world. But I have an idea for your narrating that should help the channel. I've noticed you use "all of a sudden" very often, when I think of a book a child wrote or a book written for children I think of tense moments being written as "all of a sudden". As intelligent adults we relate more gooder to phrases like "suddenly, without warning, just like that, at the worst time possible, before anyone could react, etc". Bravo Zulu BG!
