These are must watch videos for people looking to purchase a boat or who are new boat owners. I have learned so much about boating from watching these videos. I check youtube everyday to see what new video Paul has posted. He talks about the pros and the cons regarding boating. Thanks for sharing your boating knowledge.

I thought you would talk about why you should coil you line when leaving it on the dock.

Why do you not do a full circle at the start? You immediately move to an over under on the horn, which I thought was incorrect. Should be: Wrap the base that is the furthest away from your starting point (boat) Do a full wrap around the base Go over then under the horn you started from Create a loop away from your boat and pull taught Is this wrong?

I always leave my lines at my dock so I tie up the same way every single time….

You are tying the knot correctly, but you need more wraps, especially with braided dock lines on slippery cleats. I have watched the knot you tied for us literally pull of the cleat with braided lines. You need to wrap the cleat twice, or better yet put another half hitch on(two total). If you lay the half hitches correctly they will always be removable.

Yes adding one more does make it much easier if you have to lay into one and really put it under load.

Noticed that at 3:12 I think you said the boat was cleated in a lock. Never a good practice for exactly the reason you stated: risk of boat loss and having to cut lines. We're gold loopers and boat on a river with locks. Learned this lesson early and never repeated the error. You might also look up and make a "Looper's Loop". Made it much easier for the admiral to drop a loop over lock bollards.

What do you do with the "bitter end" or the left over line? I have always coiled it up like you had there but some think that can create a dock tripping hazard.

Since when do you tie off in a lock??
@NoRegretsLifestyle
@NoRegretsLifestyle 2 года назад
Yes that was a mistake in its self, but it happen and if I had tied of correctly i would not have had to cut the line. But no way should anybody tie off in any lock
@randolphh8005
@randolphh8005 8 месяцев назад
Yes, when docking both ends can be tied off with knots that can be easily untied. In a lock NEVER tie off both ends.

My Man, After being a Boy Scout, a rock climber for twenty-five years and sailor for fifty years who has owned ten sailboat and crewed on numerous other power and sail vessels, I can tell you that you don't really understand the concept of lashing you are trying to teach. You don't seem to actually know why your line would not release and you had to cut it, because the multiple half hitches you show as the purported way you tied up the boat would not have jammed. To the contrary, that technique is often used on sailboats when you want the line to come undone quickly, for sails, for tying to the dock, etc. The net effect of your video is that you explained that you did not know how to tie up the boat in the past, but now you kind-of do. Also, putting the last half-hitch on "backwards" as you accuse your wife (or is it wives in general that you think are incompetent?) will not cause the line to jam. To the contrary, it will cause the line to not be secured. But that sloppy technique has less tendency to "jam" than a properly tied cleat knot.
