You nailed it. Music of this caliber is sadly amongst the missing today. Bob and the Band changed rock music forever for the good. Recordings such as this will always be a benchmark I think.
Dylan was much criticized for bringing The Band on tour with him!! But, the joy he had playing with them is so evident in this incredible performance! R.I.P. ROBBIE ROBERTSON AND THANK YOU YOU INCREDIBLE MASTER OF MUSIC!
The greatest musicians in the world are not the ones who are the most technically proficient or can pull off the flashiest solos, but those who can lock into what’s going on around them and serve the song. That is why I’m arguing that The Band has the world’s most incredible players. Throughout this concert, they proved they can play in a variety of different genres, back up an eclectic mix of artists, and make it all sound seamless. I tip my hat to Robbie, Levon, Richard, Rick, and Garth for being the best in the biz!
I so agree! However, I totally appreciate and make an exception to Steely Dan for their expectations of technical perfection. They brought together the best session musicians in the world. 😁.
@@Oh_I_Will of course there is,The Beatles were groundbreaking and great musicians but in no way are they the best ever musicians. The Band were a lot more versatile and could switch instruments and singers for different songs with ease.
I'd argue that Little Feat captures both the technical proficiency musicianship while also creating an amazing atmosphere with their sound. Maybe not my #1 top band but definitely up there. The Band had amazing collaborations as well as original music that will always be timeless.
One of the greatest live clips of all time!!! The look on Mr danko's face is pure joy☺☺he knows the epicness that is about to happen and he can barely contain his happiness!!! The 6 of these men together is a force of epic proportions!!WOIW.
You can see that The Band was peaking that night. Those beautiful heartfelt Robbie Robertson solos are just perfect. And you can tell that Bob was pulling a fast one on them with the decision to segue into “Baby Let Me Follow You Down.” But they flowed with it seamlessly, as if they had rehearsed it. And Rick Danko’s smile says it all. They were the greatest backup band in the world for a night.
I LOVE the moment they segue from "Forever Young" into "Let Me Follow You Down." Levon, Robbie and Rick all look at Dylan as if to say "Okay, Bob...where you goin' with this?" Then it all comes together like a perfect recipe. RIP, Robbie.
Yeah, the best moment of the 'Last Waltz'. I have to think they had no idea what Dylan was up to but it sure didn't fool them. Levon straining to keep his eyes on Dylan from behind with Rick & Robbie focused on the movements of Dylan's hands. Rick knows what's up as soon as Dylan's first chord; the way he breaks into that smile & immediately starts bouncing.
Raised in a outlaw motorcycle club. I can't tell you how almost holy this music is just someone like myself. You haven't done any living until you've been around a bunch of dying.. so may you have a strong foundation when the winds of changes shift..
Love it, Dylan and the band Together rockin They go together just like peanut butter and jelly. Unfortunately, all the great rockers will leave us. but their music will live on
I was there. Hearing this makes the hair on my neck stand up. What a night, and to be a part of rock and roll history! We bought tickets to a concert (I don't even remember who) and that show got cancelled. We were given a choice, our money back or tickets to The Last Waltz with The Band. We were so fortunate. ❤🎉
You were definitely blessed to see him at that concert. I only saw him once in an arena. He was definitely not impressed with speaker system. I had front row seats , it was a memorable time .
Dylan at his very best. Blessed to see him about four years ago. Would have loved to see him live in his prime…. RIP Robbie. Thanks for all the music…. Looks like the Band is finally back together.
Wow, the musicians - Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Dr. John, Neil Young, Ronnie Wood - seen them all in concert. Scorsese knew what he was doing and despite the criticism he captured the magic.
My god. This hollered rendition of Baby, Let Me Follow You Down is insane! Bob's at his youthful peak. (One of his many peaks!) This clip is truly GOD TIER.
I have always loved the band I heard of them from Bob Dylan when they would make the albums with him I saw Bob Dylan and you're going Arizona and he was still great I saw guards and is Oregon and he was really really good too so God bless all these guys for their music going to live on forever
Great moment at about 4:17… Bob plays a D7 and you can actually see Bob mouth the words “7th” to Robbie, a chord perfect for transitioning to “Let Me Follow You Down”. Once he starts the riff The Band immediately jumps in, its so perfect it seems like they worked it out in advance, but it’s wild that it was completely impromptu by Bob
I watch this today, 8/9/23, with tears rolling down my cheeks. With the passing of Robbie Robertson, all the members of The Band, who I listened to in my little room, on my quadraphonic 8-track stereo, as a teenager in the ‘70s, are gone except Garth. Dylan and The Band were a huge part of the sound track of my youth. May God rest his soul. Rest in Peace, Robbie Robertson.
@@bigrich6750 Rich Danko and RIch Manuel was doing heroin, Levon too. The all smoked pot, and did cocaine and other stuff, but I Robbie did not do herion, I don't think Garth did either. Read Robbie's book Testimony, it's fascinating and gives a great insight not only to Dylan and the Band, but also that time period sixties into the seventies.
And was so greedy to "fu.k" all the other members of "The band". Greedy and opportunist to "play" the others that were at their lowest cause of the H. Just sad facts, just a "wise ass" backstabber
Out of complete respect for The Band ,Mr Bob Dylan sang his heart out at The Last Waltz !He knew this was the end of the rock era and there had to be a true ,fitting goodbye and thankyou to the most respected and admired band in American music ! EVER ......
When we bought the last waltz this was the first time I'd seen Dylan aside from on an album cover. The entire family watched the last waltz I watched it repeatedly as a then teenager. Bob in the flesh.did.not disappoint. I still think it's the best gig ever. My mum's favourite cos of this was Forever Young. A truly beautiful performance here.
Id like to dedicate this on 2-22-21 to my Dad on his passing RIP Thank you for making me who I am. You're on the trip of a Lifetime and I will love you forever ♥️🌹💀🙏
I read somewhere Dylan wrote this song for his children. May YOU stay "forever young" for us Dear Bob. We love you. So much your lyrics, thoughts have given to the world. As others have stated here, be blessed, have a happy heart, my God keep you close.
Marsha, Dylan did indeed write this song for his son. If you'll check at 3:09 you'll see where he acknowledges his son in the crowd by smiling & pointing. I've always thought this performance was kind of blah until that point, then it is kickass from there on.
@@mikegalvin9801Just his way of delivering an at least as beautiful baby himself…by the way this comes from a man who was in the delivery room twice himself…our living rooms at the time to be even more precise…the Dutch don’t need no delivery room for something that’s been going on for thousands of years before they even existed…even a manger would do, or so I’ve been told…
Did you go to the ‘74 tour with Bob Dylan & The Band? I was there, lol, 4 times! We liked them so much that we followed them!! College days, could get by with it then! Fabulous memories!!
agree... time tested.. like so much over the years.... and so much cool stuff from right now... it.s never going to end... the creativity is never going to end.... !
I know that music and rhythms change and adapt, but how can anyone avoid the sweet sound and delivery of this? Get up and dance, party, wave your arms, laugh...
What a concept . I've seen it done with anniversaries, but I haven't seen it in weddings but a nice way to illustrate the forming of a union. I love the idea. 😊😂
Baby Let Me Follow You Down is certainly one of the greatest performances ever filmed, it looks like the decision to play it was entirely spontaneous, and those two things are probably not unrelated.
YES!!!! I remember my brother telling me 15 years ago "See this movie, trust me"!!! He was so right.. Baby Let Me Follow You Down makes me feel so damn GOOD.....😂
Was first footage I’d seen of Bob when my brother bought the last waltz video when we were teenagers. My mum was forced to watch it dozens of times. Her favourite was forever young. Love that hat.
May God bless and keep you always May your wishes all come true May you always do for others And let others do for you May you build a ladder to the stars And climb on every rung May you stay forever young Forever young, forever young May you stay forever young May you grow up to be righteous May you grow up to be true May you always know the truth And see the lights surrounding you May you always be courageous Stand upright and be strong May you stay forever young Forever young, forever young May you stay forever young May your hands always be busy May your feet always be swift May you have a strong foundation When the winds of changes shift May your heart always be joyful May your song always be sung May you stay forever young Forever young, forever young May you stay forever young
I never thought his singing is the best in the world, but I ll take it any time, anywhere. This is one of those clips that belong in the Smithsonian for safe keeping.❤
True to his mercurial gemini nature, bobby couldn't finish one song before he got the band to 'follow him down' another...The only band that could have gone on the road with him in '65 to shatter expectations...
I watched The Last Waltz recently in April 2018, having seen it many times from its first release and for some weird ass reason I started to notice how many people in this flick were now dead and how the World is at a lost for it. All things must pass.
@@Luke-pd7xj : It was a time when such music will be played in decades to come because it is indeed priceless music that will touch the soul of the listener each and every time. I see Rick Danko and Levon Helm in a small Club in Greenwich Village NYC in 1983, just the two them playing every instrument you can imagine, I was with a Japanese girlfriend, Im from Scotland, she had never heard of the Band and she was overwhelmed with their sound, I was right next to the Stage, I will never forget that show. Now both gone. R.I.P.
I listen to these two songs every year on Thanksgiving--the first song being a blessing I always need, and then some kickass rock and roll by Bob & The Band. Then I play the traditional Thanksgiving anthem--Arlo Guthie's "Alice's Restaurant."
My absolute favorite moment in the Last Waltz: Forever Young wraps up and everyone is looking at Dylan with the where are we going next eyes. Dylan starts Baby Let Me Follow You Down, Rick Danko is like YEAH!
I was trying to figure that out. I think those first notes are Mr Dylan, right? He told em slow down, then he started it, then just get out of the way!
The interplay between them. The combined two songs is my love story with my woman. A million thank you's to Bob, Garth, Levon, Richard, Rick, and Robbie!
2 times in less than 2 years, at Bills house of the Fillmore, my salvation came here by angeles places among us, singled me out & say can we help?, what can you do, well lets see, and that's how it went one night there, I walked back w/them after the show, amazing people, nurses, see thee in the flesh, meet their monster minded help in the loony bin, went they heard, I was given a bed , a shower, nurse garb, my clothes were taken away, said, I had the same thing happen at Woodstock, froze a day and half, until scored a pants..they understood, said, save it get some sleep, see you in am...Kathi, big sis, was a resident in the same hotel owned by hospital, it was more a residence, and I was just there once. knew I was in good hands.
Bob's genius, palpable. Felt like Robbie wasn't really in the groove on FY, so he plays something that suited Robbie's energy and let him shine. Beautiful.
Bob's songs will be around till Eternity, he KNOWS they are good and good songs last the distance. I heard him say something like that in an interview. In his case, he has HUNDREDS of great songs!
Every musician on stage is checking on Dylan every few seconds...look at them giving Dylan quick glances, even Robertson in the middle of a solo. They are all following and serving the genius.
I joined the Navy in 1978, and I can say that these songs were played by the guys often. Be it Scotland, The Azores or Israel - I listened to this. Made me think of home.
LOVE the eye contact before they launch into an unplanned reprise of BLMFYD. Dylan mouths 'seven' to Robbie to let him know he's switching to a 7th chord for the transition. Then just listen how quickly they're back into it.
Robbie saw clear enough to have a right out celebration concert to end it all of at the peak of their powers. A monumental concert put on film by Scorsese. For us all to enjoy and for some few lucky ones to remember. Beautiful and powerful art.
If only Rick had stayed on the right path we would've had him such alot longer. He looked as though he had it all when performing...bopping happily to the music.
Saw Last Waltz in the theater recently with my 25 year old grandchild. We sang along as most others did. Then Bob came on and started singinging forever young. We cried, we just sat and cried.
By far the best rock concert I ever experienced was the Planet Waves tour--Bob Dylan accompanied by The Band--in 1975. This video seems to be from that tour. An unforgettable experience!
