CalicoSilver disects this song over on his channel. Basically the song is about his disgust with evangelical movement he was part of. By 1981 he wanted out. The song though was too raw and pointed to put on an album. Just like the folk movement, he grew to dislike it and had to leave thus the line "beat a path of retreat".

If you consider the name Angelina and the reference to spiral staircases you might see the link between the Farewell Angelina of long ago who was lost to the Tennessee Waltz (Aggie by Stones) to this person who is also mentioned in partially in (Watching the River Flow) or song This dream of You. It’s a different woman but it’s also a brand new Tennessee Waltz. Listen to that song and know that Victorian stairs are also spiral staircases.
