@@becomingsmith5715 That was set up. Bob knew Chumlee would eventually "find" him. yeah..You will always 'find" Dylan just walking down The Vegas Strip with his bus parked up the street in broad daylight lol.
Bob is wise enough not to answer questions designed for the interviewers benefit. He knows it really doesn't matter because people believe what they want to believe.
Exactly. When the interviewer asked “do you think your music has developed from the 60’s?” It was constructed more as a dig at Dylan than an actual question
When a painting or sculpture is viewed in a museum you don't get to ask the painter what he was thinking or how he feels about it. I think Dylan sees his music like that.
well put. even more true of writing than non-lit arts. the writer said it the first time in what they judged the best way to say what they felt needed saying ... incl ambivalences & ambiguities where desirable. some can of corn who hasn't listened or can't hear who then asks what the writer to tell him what the works said is just plain braindead bozo lame imo.
well actually they do. I am a painter and people are always asking me, what were you thinking when you made this? what is this painting about? I tell them it's subjective, and they tell me they see all these things in the painting I never even thought of, but just say, that's the beauty of art. I rarely tell them anything about what I was think, because you really can't. I might tell them how I made it, the process, the media, etc. I think painters get this more, because songs have lyrics and people have some sense of what it might mean, whereas painting is all visual vocabulary.
William Alford I had a book of Dylan’s lyrics translated into Spanish. A friend of mine met a guy who claimed to know Dylan and my friend asked him if he’d ask Dylan to sign the book. He said he would. A few weeks later the book was returned in the mail with a signature purporting to be Dylan’s. I never believed it was Dylan’s signature. Then, few years ago, I saw a video on RU-vid of a fan getting Dylan’s signature on an album. The fan showed the signature to the camera. I wanted to compare the signature to the one in my book. But when I went to look for the book I couldn’t find it. The End. Ha! Ha!
I esp liked that one too. and the reply "we don't like you any more". "what's yr whole attitude towards someone when you meet them?" classic eg of how dumb these questions are.
He makes me laugh with delight, he's so himself and so honest that he just doesn't fit all the precious concepts and has no compromise in mind to fit, either.
The sense I have is that he’s doing everything he can to hang onto an authentic life while they chip away at him with their canned, stupid, intrusive questions, creating a construct they call “Bob Dylan” that they intend to sell in magazines that he can never defend as false and unfair without looking obstreperous and rude.
The man is just amazing really. I love how even in just a conversation he can just something that is just a great line, like "how can I answer that if you've got the nerve to ask me?" or "I'm not questioning you because I don't expect any answers from you."
I always love the way he shoots down those "fans" being rude outside the car. Being rude and still begging him for an autograph. "If you needed it I'd give it to you." Dismissed.
@Your Mother no he didn't, you imagine not wanting people trying to shove their hand in your car saying why shouldn't he give it about your autograph, he even says you called me a bum which they prob did before the video started it's people being rude just because they think he's some Thing and not a person... Dylan is the only honest celebrity, he never gave a shit what people thought which is why he doesn't need to fake smile And sign autographs so that he gets good press.... He doesn't owe anyone anything, it was other people who put him on a Pedistal and then they get annoyed when he doesn't want to give them what they want.... The guy is fucking genius and I applaud him for standing his ground
My generations reluctant hero. People wouldn't stay off him. The bastards showed up at his house with his children sleeping in their beds, looking for answers he didn't have. Some of my friends wanted to go on a road trip to find him, they ended up escaping the Moonies. I was a sensible hippie, you don't go busting in on people, especially people with no privacy to begin with. He probably really understands how Princess Diana felt. Love you Bobby, peace brother.
Yeah, he had hippie climbing on his roof while he was trying to sleep. He talked to a lawyer and asked what he could do. The lawyer said if they fall off and hurt themselves, you could be sued. He felt overwhelmed and violated. And the hippies would come in and raid his icebox too, of course. He had to move out of his own house before he shot someone just to get peace of mind. Then when he moved to NYC, they waited outside his building and yelled stuff up at his windows, so his neighbors got mad at him for moving in.
@@kazabushy The best short essay I have read so far that answers all your questions and more is called "On the writing style of Bob Dylan." www.stephen-doty.com/on-the-writing-style-of-bob-dylan/ [He's from Minnesota.]
That's very true, but even his interviews in 1964 when he was just getting popular, he was very annoyed with questions. One interviewer questioned the symbolism of his t-shirt lol. He said "I don't know, I haven't put much thought into it". It's funny how the press analyze every move he makes and expects answers, when it's just a stupid shirt that he put on that day. I love his interviews, they are pretty funny.
Poor Dylan, hahahahahahahaha, he had to hear all those stupid questions...he was too smart for those interviewers!! :P That's why he became so irritated with them...sigh! He was a deep person, and all the media trying to stereotype him, label him...He just understood he was being very creative and doing what he loved: compose and sing songs. :)
I think the truly miraculous thing about Dylan is the fact he didn't let the mindless masses squash him. I am so glad he was the voice of my adolescence he gave me refuge and hope. I remember seeing the interview with the journo who actually said 'I haven''t listended to your music'' ! When Dylan asked ''then why are you interviewing me'' journo replied ''because it's my job'' WTF 90 percent of a journos job is research. Dylan helped keep it real and pull them in to face themselves - and still does. There is serious depth and courage in that. Got to me thinking - who do we have like that now? Anybody?
It's not that it's torturous, but there are hardships that come with fame. That's not to say that it's not worth the trade off, but just because it's nice to be famous doesn't mean there aren't things that are difficult about it. It's nice to be beautiful. but it comes with problems. It's nice to be rich but that comes with problems. That something is good overall doesn't mean there isn't a downside. People don't lose the right to have problems because one area of life treats them well.
This interview was great! He never did the talk shows so hearing him speak is a rarity. There is always something quotable whenever he does talk. "The moment we're born, we're old enough to die" Loved the answer to why he doesn't go on the internet "Some pervert might lure me away" So funny! I could of seen him perform in the 70's for free. He did the Michigan State Fair. It was getting dark and my car was parked in a sketchy area. Totally regret not staying to see him. You could sit right at the edge of the stage! Finally did see him and the Band in Ann Arbor, MI.(11/6/2019) Says he plays to the back row, thought someone was playing harp along with him next to me. Guess it's the unique acoustics of Hill auditorium. Absolutely, positively one of my favorite people!
Its funny, one would say that he's acting irrationally or rudely, but he is simply reacting the way a good, humble human being would, and should. I have so much respect for Bob Dylan because he cared about nothing but to get his best music out and to play it for those who wanted to listen. A great man indeed.
What he was doing in a way was teaching the press not to treat artists like gods, because that's dangerous and harmful to everyone. Also, he knew and had experienced that press doesn't really care about what he has to say anyway, because they only want a story they can sell. So he figured not to give them anything.
I saw a clip of Duke Ellington being interviewed he had the same demeanor as Dylan. If the person asking them questions has an ego, is controlling or tries to pry things out of them then Duke, Dylan and those like them put up a wall and watch you struggle to climb it. Dylan must trust you first before he opens up to you.
Bob is so cool because he's still alive and kicking. Most of the popular folk singers and rockstars died (see age 27 Joplin, Hendrix, Cobain) but Dylan is still living.
'do you think you're music has changed since the 60's?' 'do you think you've changed since the 60's?' 'do you think your audience has changed since the 60's?' ... no shit it had been over 10 years, how terrible would it be if artists' music didn't change after a decade? of course the audience changed and of course he'd changed - 10 years had passed!
He was actually very buddhist just living in his moment describing his moment with his music, he just put it out there, didnt care what other people thought of it, like all great artists
that my friends is how you don't sell out!! You can tell he does music for the message and because it is his passion not for the fame and glamour. I love this guy
He's openly said on numerous occasions that he didn't write the music to pass a message on. The songs were simply happenings. It's on the individual listening to hear a message. So you've absolutely misunderstood Dylan as a person.
He has said he didn't write music to influence people or give out some message. He writes music about what he is thinking at the time. I love how John Lennon explains it to the hippie....He even refers to Dylan.
Incredibile Dylan!! Mentre canta Ascoltandolo .attentamente .. Geniale..! Ineguagliabile!! Bob!! !!Love You! genio ❤️❤️❤️
This is great ..... a man fully aware that the God like status thrust upon him was undeserved. A poet? ..... definitely ...... but a prophet? ..... hardly. All Dylan did was describe exactly what he saw in front of his face. Which goes to show how blind the rest of us are.
I don't think it was deliberate, but this made him seem like a really pissy and hateful person. He can be sometimes, but that's only because he's human. It's understandable that he feels uncomfortable with the press asking him so many questions, sometimes completely unrelated to his music, which is all he cares about. His sole focus is music. He also seems like a very private man, and also very humble with his success in most cases. But still, great editing and I like the footage that I've never seen before :)
not to me. I think he is not an interviewee. He's a musician, a singer. Why should he pander to interviewers? Why? Doesn't success give you any more degrees of freedom? He wasn't pandering when he started out, why should he once he's become famous? This is the sign of a truly creative, inspired and self determined individual. If you call that pissy and hateful then that says a lot about you, not the person whose honesty you interpret that way.
I think you misunderstood my comment. I didn't say that he has to change himself for interviewers, nor did I say that he himself was a pissy or hateful man. I just meant that people may misunderstand this video upon first watching it because of the clips in it are of him being uncomfortable and often snappy with the press. I know he's a truly creative, inspired and self-determined individual as you put it,I agree with you, but interviewers are people too and are just doing their jobs, even though some of them may be asking inappropriate question. I just meant to say that just because he seems pissy and hateful in some interviews, doesn't mean he's like that as a person. Not one of the clips are of him being exactly comfortable, so that's all I meant to say. I don't think you read the rest of my comment because most of what you said I said too, that he's a musician and all he cares about is his music. I don't see how my comment revealed anything about me; I admire his honesty and truly love his music. Hopefully this made sense, sorry it's so long, I just didn't want you misunderstanding what i meant :)
Krishtie Mofazzal There's a lot of reasons why Dylan treats the interviewers the way he does, and to be honest I think I would treat them very similarly. One reason I think he treats them that way is because he knows they have no interest in him other than the that he's famous. If he wasn't someone that was popular most of the reporters wouldn't give a shit about him. This is a very unsettling thing to someone who cares about real relationships and getting to know someone because you're interested in them, not because they're famous. Another reason I think he treats them that way is because they're projecting there own opinions of who he is on him and not letting him say who he is for himself. I can relate to this, there's been quite a few times where I've had my parents introduce me to someone and define me as something I don't see myself to be. Even though I'm usually fairly quiet it bothers me enough to say something about it when my parents do that. I can't imagine having every reporter doing that same thing, and having everyone see me as something other (or even opposite) of the way I see myself. I'd go crazy, and probably become a real jerk to people.
+joshua church he always felt that the system was there to find good looking artist who can sing, and that is would be alright they can do it all. But without the experience behind it, they were just disposable. Dylan knew that the reporters were part of that system ready at any moment to bait him into their primitive systematic commodity generator...and he is so not from that world.
I really like this man:) I mean reporters don't seem to understand that he doesn't owe them an answer when they keep asking him silly questions that don't have anything to do with his music. Look how defenseless they are. Just priceless!
Aside from the sharp comments check out the guitar playing, and the incredible sound he gets on that small Nick Lucas. Dylan is really blazing, and in my opinion never sounded better.
Everytime I hear that woman- "you know him, he's yours" I get creeped out- Great footage- It really shows that Dylan has been consistent in his refusal to be what the "image" that developed was and his trying to push back against it. Bob is always "being born" and that IS his art.
Bob Dylan is forever bound by truth and the living word. A song taken captive by the heart in a thirsty desert. Everything about Bob Dylan Robert Zimmerman is honesty's moan of ecstasy.
Man. Music aside (and I never cared for it), Dylan deserves a medal for putting up with all those bullshit questions. Imagine dealing with that day after day after day.
Some people are a decade ahead of the times. Some people are 20 years ahead. Some are 50 years ahead. Some, like Dylan, are at least a century ahead. He's STILL ahead of the times. Perhaps 40 years from now in 2060, people will get it.
My take on this is that Bob never wanted to be put on a pedestal and found the whole scene absurd, much in the same way The Beatles did. He makes music. People can listen if they want to, or ignore him if they want to. It's easy to see why he and George Harrison became friends from this common perspective.
Especially love "Its Alright Ma" in this video, his vocals & guitar are Spot On ! Man Bob hated reporters and hated answering questions ... I do think that was rather arrogant and rude, HOWEVER, he probably had only a few articles that were reported in an intelligent and non judgmental way .. Most reporters probably did not get him or even try to get him and it came out so in their articles ... I can't really blame him for his attitude. They earned it ...
Bob Dylan is inspiring to many people because he left his home and ventured to New York to do what he loved. He tripped into fame whether he liked it or not. He accepted this fate, so is it just a terrible thing for him to also want to be a person and continue his life? He became who he wanted to be, against the media and the booing crowds. Love Bob for the man he is, or stop watching these videos. Good lord.
