Dylan met Joe Gallo once at a party. Then when Joe, got out, Dylan was invited to his "Getting Out" party. They were friends, that is why every person & place mentioned in this song is fact. Same here, RIP Joey. I'm 71, God how I wish we had men like him. Imagine Crazy Joe being told he can't eat meat because of Climate Change Imagine Telling Joe "Bugs will be the new source of Protein" Bwaaaaaa Not Good

@waynejohanson1083 never said one word to me . Saw him walking I yelled at him he looked over and saw me with my hand out. The reason why he came over to shake my hand was I stood still and did not make a move toward him. I did not threaten his safety. Shook my hand. Touch touches your hand with no grip. A very power man in person. He is everything what they say about him. I got lucky that's all. He would of signed a autograph for me but I did not ever think I would run into him. Saw him in Akron ohio Saturday October 21 2023.

I was born in 63 and I have said in music that the person I would love to meet is this same person, respect, nice to know that such a slow song can have that many admirers. In my life there has not been a song writer ever who has expressed themselves in their daily world.

He claims in a '60 minutes' interview that he answers to a "higher" power and alluded to Satan...Sold his soul and will have to answer for that. Or will he? Life on planet Earth is tolerable when insulated by millions of dollars, his is now a life WITHOUT limits. The Book says: For the love of money is the root of all evil... A rock and metal fan and guitar player, this album has long been on my Desert Island Disc list. Having grown up in NJ just a short drive from NYC, the "Hurricane" Carter story was known to all of us in our late teens and early adult years. But it was the mournful playing of the violin throughout this album that to this day keeps it as one of my favorite listening albums of all time.

Such a beautiful tune! Just a beginner here, and I've been pushing my Bob Dylan journey (for the 3rd time in my life; I feel like I've finally reached maturity for his sophistication) for the past 2mth. This tune sounds better the 15th time I hear it compared to the 14th...with plenty of growth to come. He certainly hit the depths of art, humanity, and spirituality that many "comparable" greats failed to even come close to.

In 1996 Dylan performed Joey at the Bronco Bowl in Oak Cliff. This is the Dallas neighborhood where Stevie Ray Vaughan grew up and where Lee Harvey Oswald fled after the events described in Murder Most Foul. It was built in the 50's as a combination bowling alley, indoor putt putt and small concert venue by the son of H.L. Hunt (the REAL Jed Clampett) who probably funded the John Birch Society back in the day. Funny how all these threads of Americana blend to weave this Great American Tapestry. The next day I asked the owner of the small store I worked at if he liked the concert? He said it was okay... I wish he had played more of his old songs...who wants to pay to hear him sing JOEY?

Dylan was so naive to beatify Joey Gallo. He was not a hero of the working man. He was a violent and vicious gangster. That's it. Now it's cool to write a ballad about his bizarre life, but not to sing that the man was a hero. He was a monster. Having set the record straight, it is a terrific song. It's just that Hurricane Carter was a violent man but actually a real hero, doing time for a crime he did not commit. Joey was not innocent.

Emmylou was the perfect partner on that entire album In this song, about a real person Joe Gallo. She made it truly sound like a tragic opera. Beautiful song, Bob Dylan once again shows his genius for Lyrics. God Bless You Bob, I'm a fan for 56 Years!!! All those years his and all the songs, His Lyrics are pure Genius. I'm still trying to Interpret "Desolation Row" 50 Freakin years and I still can't interpret it. Love the melody & guitar work in that song. The Lrics?, Well as I said Bob Dylan is a GENIUS

I absolutely hate the way Joey gets disparaged by critics. I maintain that Joey is one of Dylan’s greatest middle fingers to music critics. It’s as if he’s calling attention to the hypocrisy of saying it’s okay to glorify cowboy gangsters from the 19th century in folk songs but not contemporary 20th century ones

U guys no who the songs about? An infamous or famous Mafia capo who shot the Columbo boss Joe Columbo at a rally on June 28th 1971 but I'm actually not sure whether they proved it was Joe Gallo? Great album one of my favourite esp the third song side two, i just don't remember while this is playing but isis what a fantastic lyrically orgasmic song!!! Where does that come from i mean it's just perfection and don't ask about Blood on the Tracks, done the year after, two albums of total total perfection!!!

Gambino had Columbo killed and set it up to look like Joey did it. Don Carlo didn't like that Italian bullshit league Columbo set up.
