Some day this giant of a man won’t be around anymore. I just can’t wrap my head around that. If only I could wrap my arms around him one time to show him how much he’s meant to me. Love ya, Bobby. I’m sticking with you through and through…

While in college, I woke up one morning to The Jack of Hearts. Blood on the Tracks became my favorite album. Got married in 1983. Our daughter developed brain cancer, and was treated in Boston until she died at 5 in 1998 after a year. I drove back and forth from Binghamton to and from Boston. Time Out of Mind kept me company. And then, Dylan gifted us with this. My beautiful wife passed away in August. I almost feel like Dylan was a member of my family.

The most remarkable thing about Dylan is that his later writing is as good as his earlier writing. Usually, even the greatest artists are unable to sustain the quality of their early years - they might still produce some really good work but the consistency isn't there. Dylan is the rare exception. He has a unique gift. Many people write well in their early years, but who else has ever sustained it for seven decades?
@seanhennessey9869
@seanhennessey9869 Год назад
true, agree, however the 80s were pretty much a swale for Bob, I think...except for Jokerman, a few songs....Oh Mercy was good, but man, Under a Red Sky, Knocked Out Loaded, Empire Burlesque, et al, they weren't very consistent, at least i don't think so ....he really seemed to get it together after Man Out of Time, ever since then a nice streak, impressive....
@therainman7777
@therainman7777 Год назад
I mean this is a great song from a great album, but almost no one would claim his later output was truly as good as his output during the 60s. Even Dylan himself, in that famous interview with 60 Minutes (I think) said that he looks back at his music from that time with awe, that he has no idea how he did it, and that he knows he can’t do it anymore. He said he doesn’t even feel like he wrote those songs, like they were just channeled through him. He referenced “It’s Alright Ma” as an example, saying he has no idea how he wrote songs that good and can’t do it anymore. It’s ok, it happens to basically every artist. His new stuff is still very good. But we shouldn’t pretend that Rough And Rowdy is Highway 61 Revisited or Blonde On Blonde.

Been a huge Bob fan since my buddy Greg played me 'A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall' in the school cafeteria in Grade 9 - the poetry of that song completely blew me away and sent me down the Bob Dylan rabbit hole, where I've been happy ever since. The whole album is brilliant, but this is my favourite track by far - I could listen to this all day, preferably with that day ending in a sunset over the water somewhere. Bob Dylan is a gift for our collective soul - we're infinitely richer for having shared his time on this planet.

@@kevanbrown7620 BOTT was always a masterpiece to me. But then when I go back, there were so many under rated albums and songs. My son grew up thinking BOTT was "the Best of Bob Dylan" because it was always in my car, on cassette, and later several CD's that got scratched. But Bob always has something up his sleeve. I wonder if some of these are old, unreleased songs? Along with some new ones? Always a mystery.

I get the feeling that Key West and the people and places mentioned in this song are part of a 'lost era' of America. An America that could have been. An America that was slowly being eroded away from the beginning of the 20th century and was truly lost after the murder of JFK. Key West is the 'land of light', 'innocence and purity' 'the enchanted land'. After JFK's murder (it was 'like a human sacrifice') the 'age of the Antichrist' began. The 'soul of a nation been torn away', going 'into a slow decay' now it's 'thirty-six hours past judgement day'. Key West is at once a real place and a mythical place in the mind of the philosoher pirate, a truth seeker and free thinker from the 'wrong side of the railroad tracks'. A place to seek inspiration and love. A retreat, a hiding place, a refuge from the Land Of Oz, Babylon, the ever encroaching post-modern soulless new world where you will lose your mind. Key West, a place where his heroes, predecessors and now dead contemporaries live on and which he will never abandon even it 'might not be the thing to do' ('i'm sticking with you, through and through') because he has his 'feet planted square on the ground'. Key West is the philosoher pirate's Elysian Fields.

Been with Dylan for a lifetime..1962, I'm in high school in Philly. This guy a year older was always running away from home and school, only to return a week or 2 later. So, one time he comes back, and we're in the cafeteria and he's telling us about his last adventure..He was in New York City, in Greenwich Village, slept in an alley, went to a little club and saw this singer/guitar player..Said "he's gonna be the next big thing..his name is Bob Dylan." A year or two later I was buying and living on Dylan records.

Rough and Rowdy Ways, Bob Dylan's new album, is a meditation on life, death, and America. The album, released on June 19, 2020, is his first collection of original songs in eight years. The theme of death is central to the album. Dylan evokes death in a variety of ways, through images and metaphors. In "Key West (Philosopher Pirate)", for example, the city of Key West is described as a place to seek "immortality." In "Murder Most Foul," Dylan sings of "a dream that turned into a nightmare" and "a nation that's dyin'." America is often used as a metaphor for death in Rough and Rowdy Ways. In "Goodbye Jimmy Reed," Dylan sings of "a country that's dyin'." In "Mother of Muses," Dylan says that "the generals who fought in World War II paved the way for Elvis, Martin Luther King, and then me." Music is a way for Dylan to express his vision of life and death. The songs on Rough and Rowdy Ways are often long and complex, with lyrics rich in imagery and metaphor. The music is often melancholic and nostalgic, but also energetic and vital. Rough and Rowdy Ways is a complex and layered album that offers multiple interpretations. It is an album about death and immortality, America and music. It is an album that reflects the vision of an artist who has lived through history and continues to search for answers to life's big questions.
