"Knockin' on Heaven's Door" is a song written and performed by the iconic American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan. It was originally released on the soundtrack of the 1973 film "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid," in which Dylan also had a minor acting role. The song has since become one of Dylan's most well-known and enduring compositions.
"Knockin' on Heaven's Door" features a simple chord progression and poignant lyrics that touch on themes of mortality, death, and redemption. The song's chorus, which repeats the phrase "Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door," has become particularly iconic and recognizable.
Over the years, "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" has been covered by numerous artists from various genres, further cementing its status as a classic. Some notable covers include versions by Eric Clapton, Guns N' Roses, and Avril Lavigne, among others.
The song's popularity has endured, and it remains a staple of Dylan's live performances as well as a beloved track in his extensive discography. It has been praised for its emotional depth and simplicity, making it resonate with audiences across generations.

I think winning the Nobel Prize for Literature is all you need to say, except that he kicked the door in for the rebellious songs of the 60's and his poetry is taught in many universities.

There's Bob Dylan, then there's all the rest. He's unique, a one off, irreplaceable, the likes of whom we will never see again. His canon of work is unsurmountable, no one equals his output, content, genre of work, live performances, once you're hooked, there's no going back...

So much to say about this living legend, but I'll keep it short! Dylan is known as one of the greatest songwriters/poets of all time -- a gifted wordsmith and storyteller, with a political conscience. He started out as an American folk singer of the 60s, then turned more to the rock side, inspiring such bands as the Beatles and bringing folk-rock more into the mainstream. A few of his early well-known songs are: "Blowin' In The Wind", "The Times They Are A-changin'", "Like A Rolling Stone", "Hey Mr. Tambourine Man", and so many more. Thanks for another great reaction, guys! ✌💙✌

Dylan is my favorite artist. You see the comments from others extolling his virtues and achievements and it’s all true. His songs, The Times They Are A-changing, It’s Alright Ma, Like A Rolling Stone, Subterranean Homesick Blues, Tangled Up In Blue and Masters of War are worthy. Really, you can’t go wrong with any Dylan song. Deep rabbit hole. Most importantly, listen to the lyrics.

Bob Dylan was raised within less than an hour from me in Minnesota. I attended one of his open air concerts in the harbor city of Duluth right on the shore of big Lake Superior. What a concert underneath the stars on a warm summer's night! Bob's awards are many, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for Literature; several Grammy awards and so much more! *One of Dylan's finest work is his recording of "Hurricane", a true biographical account of a black professional boxer named Reuben Carter, who was falsely accused and tried for murder.

If you want to see early “ rap” by Bob in the mid-sixties watch the “ Subterranean Homesick Blues” video. Also- get out the lyrics for “ Like A Rolling Stone”. He is our singer songwriter poet laureate who’s been also covered hundreds of times. Another great live video is “ Hurricane” which is about the prize fighter, Ruben “ Hurricane” Carter , who was falsely imprisoned for murder. Bob’s song helped to get him out of jail. He sang at MLK’s March on Washington at age 21- by invitation. ❤❤❤❤ And don’t forget Jimi Hendrix’s biggest record - “ All Along the Watchtower” - written by Bob!

His "Blowin' In the Wind" & "The Times They Are A-Changin'" were very important & beloved during the Civil Rights Movement in the 60's. If you aren't familiar with them you should check them out. Another very popular song is "Subterranean Homesick Blues". It's known for interesting wordplay (you have to see the Official video with Bob holding signs) & it also references the Civil Rights Movement. Bob was very much a social activist. Bob Dylan wrote the music for the soundtrack of the western film Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid, directed by the great film director Sam Pekinpah (who also directed the fantastic western The Wild Bunch). Knocking on Heaven's Door is a song from that soundtrack where one of the men (Slim Pickens) hunting Billy is shot in the stomach, and while not already dead, knows that there is no hope of him surviving the wound.

I've long said that if Bob Dylan had only written "It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)" he would have deserved the Nobel Peace Prize in Literature just for that. There is a live, black & white video of him performing this song (on DailyMotion / Bob Dylan May 1 1965 , it's alright ma i'm only bleeding , Liverpool - England) - also same performance uploaded on YT with lyrics. An absolute must. Maybe the YT one with lyrics because he is speaking fast and the lyrics are incredible.

His lyrics tell the story of our lives . . . as a Dylan fan since the early 70s, I grew up on his songs and cheered his courage in calling out the wrongs around us. From maybe the first rap song (It's All Right, Ma) to calling out those who "play with our world like it's their little toy" in Masters of War or the injustice of racism in Hurricane - I could go on and on - I look forward to watching you all discover him. Another Bob Dylan fact most don’t know … he performed the song “Pawn in their Game” at the March on Washington (same event where MLK gave his famous I Have a Dream speech. Dylan’s audio quality on the RU-vid videos I’ve seen isn’t the best. But I urge you 3 to watch that performance (you don’t have to react to it - but it was such a pivotal event in American history it’s 100% worth a watch to really get what Dylan meant to the 60s.)

Give a listen to In My Time of Dyin’, Man of Constant Sorrow, House of the Risin’ Sun, and/or Freight Train Blues. It’ll give you the proper perspective for examining his later songs.

My great grandfather knew Billy the Kid and Pat Garrett, After being aTexas Ranger in the 1870s he retired to New Mexico. When he was 8 yrs old, a rogue group of confederates killed his grandfather, father and teenage brother in Texas because they refused to join the confederate cause. And even after witnessing this horror, he remained a good man for the rest of his long life so I always think of him when I hear this song about a lawman of the west saying goodbye
