This is a song that was left on the recording room floor. He makes these masterpieces so consistently that even he doesn’t fully appreciate them. Most songwriters go their whole life without coming up with a song nearly as majestic. I feel sorry for Bob Dylan because he doesn’t have Bob Dylan to inspire him.

First time I heard this song, I put it on repeat and listened to it over and over again. Dylan is the caliber of artist who can create something as beautiful as this, and then decide to cut it out and leave it sitting around for a decade or two. It's staggering.

Nice! An outtake from his 1997 album, Time Out of Mind. For a taste of what made the album, check out "Not Dark Yet", "Standing in the Doorway", or "Tryin' to Get to Heaven". With Dylan it's usually songs from before I was born, but these gems from the nineties were real treats back then as they are now.

Thanks. Wonderful reaction. I remember when I purchased this CD box set and first heard Red River Shore, I listened to this song five or six times in a row. I could not believe this was never on a regular album. As said by others in their comments, this is a majestic song and up there with his best. Take care. ☮

I've heard this song a hundred times and just like all the others, it never gets old. Beautiful song, lovely reaction & great choice. My later Dylan suggestions would be: Ring them Bells, Its All Good, Series of Dreams, Po Boy and High Water 👍

The sudden realization that the song is coming to an end is quite noticeable in your facial expressions at around 7:40. Understandably, the song must come to an end for everyone else as well...except...well...I/we can all listen to it again and again.
