A radio broadcaster, his quaking manservant and an heiress investigate the mystery of a haunted castle in Cuba.

Turkey Jackson: Aunt Lucy is looking down from above and seeing the way you're treating me lately.
Jeff Peters: Are you going to start stuffing that Aunt Lucy down my throat again?
Turkey Jackson: Yeah, well never mind. She saw ya tossing that coin and licking your chops. You're certainly sloughing off your promise to her. Aunt Lucy ... I can see her now lying on her dying bed looking at you with those big trusting eyes ... Before I go Jeff promise me one thing she said. Jeff Peters: Yeah, then she up and died before I had a chance to say no.
Turkey Jackson: Shhhhhhhh ...
Jeff Peters: What are you shhhhh'n ... What's that? What's the matter?
Turkey Jackson: I hope she didn't hear that. The dead have a way of coming back you know.
Jeff Peters: Get out, when they're dead they're dead.

Perhaps Bob Hope was forced to add this line to counteract the fabulous line in THE GHOST BREAKERS, when he is being told what zombies are, mindless, soulless walking about, not knowing what they are doing, not caring. Hope then replies: "You mean like Democrats?"

He said a line in "Cat and the Canary" about republicans. It was a horror comedy like Ghost breakers, so maybe for every Republican joke, the next movie he had a democrat one.

i interpreted this as a joke about how republicans are religious and democrats are atheists. He's saying she believed she'd be in heaven so maybe she is. the democrats can't have god help or hurt people in heaven, they never believed.

It's a Democrat voter fraud joke, when a member of the Democrat party dies the party often continues receiving votes in elections under their registration, all interested parties know they do it, it's just hard to make a case because of the nature of the secret ballot. The Democrats do it, Republicans don't.

50calBeowulf I know that, but the joke implies that Republicans come back from the dead, not Democrats, which reverses the whole joke. Maybe repubs took part in it in the 40’s and not dems.

Republican voters come back from the dead as Democrat voters. This is a well known phenomena.

Mikey Condry I think the joke was saying the republicans no matter how unpopular they may appear always come back. This was in 1942 at a time when despite vanishing in representatives at the beginning of the depression, they were starting to gain support in the northeast and Midwest where they had been strong before the depression. If it’s a voter fraud joke it’s a bit dumb in fairness to the republicans they weren’t particularly notorious for such practices back then.
