Never played at a high level, only high school basketball in North Dakota (1984 state champions BTW) and our coach drilled us like this. Nothing wrong with this. My coach actually showed up at my dad's funeral last November. I hated him at the time but respect him now for how great he made us. 21-3 1984 Century Patriots.
@@Amero2323 i didn’t hate him then, hated him in 1984 when he made us run like crazy and yelled. But, we knew since about 8th or 9th grade that we had something special going on with our guys and it paid off as Seniors.
Yeah college basketball needs more coaches like him sure his temper was definitely way too far at times but he was very good coach he always made sure that players listened to him
This is deep coaching with micro possessions and reading the defense to make real-time offensive adjustments and fundamentals of handling the ball and running the offense. I grew up in Indiana, was the Hot Shot Champion at Purdue basketball camp in the early 1980s (because I could not get into IU camp), played the game since I was 5, played JV and Varsity and every day in college with many great players in the Indianapolis area and consider myself very intelligent about the game knowing and playing many offenses and defenses. I leaned much in this quick practice segment where he is mic'd up. He obviously remained himself and let the audience get real access. I was on the track team in college in the late 80s and we went down to Bloomington to practice in the Fieldhouse because our college did not have indoor track facilities. IU basketball practice was next door and Assembly Hall was attached but practice was private. You couldn't get in there if you wanted. My old man gave our instructions like this and I had a couple coaches that were on your ass all the time which I responded to and most others did too just fine. I got to shake Coach Knight's hand one time. IU came to our hometown for a Red & White scrimmage in 1983 and the gym was packed with 7,400. I made my way down by the corner of the court where they went in the locker room and I stepped out in front of him just to shake his hand. It was an honor and a thrill. He shook my hand , looked down at me (he was big) and kept moving.
Great comment. Thanks for sharing. I am a Knight fan who is well aware of his flaws. He changed the way the game was played and coached. I appreciate all he has done for the great game of basketball!
@Cavalcade of Fred Couples establish credibility by simply stating the level you played at and what state you're from if can back it up. Otherwise you're just running your mouth.
Players who committed to play at IU while coach Knight was there knew what they were in for. IU needs another coach like Knight to get the players to quit being lackadaisical as these players today feel like they are entitled to things without having to put in the work. Say what you want to about coach Knight but he got more out of less talent than the anybody whoever has coached the game of basketball. I didn't always condone his behavior but look how most of his former players turned out to be and that is successful because he made them work instead of being a snowflake like coach Archie Miller is. If I had a kid who was a talented player back when coach Knight was still coaching at IU I would have sent him to play at IU as not only would he would have to work but most importantly he would have been taught life lessons unlike coaches of today do.
Toward the end specially after the ‘87 championship, he got into “celebrity benefits” a little too much. Fishing trips with rumors of affairs with newscasters and hanging strip clubs during the off-season while holding coaching clinics. Lot of his yelling like in this video was that he cared and he was in shape but when he wasn’t it got dark for the coaches and players especially during the mid-90’s when Purdue was winning those titles. When he went to a Texas Tech, he was back and fit.
@@davanmani556 I've read that, too. Despite what the knight d-riding boomers want to believe, the movie Hoosiers wasn't real, and the real life Coach Dale was shitcanned for being an abusive, loud mouthed POS!
you don't know a single player who players today...how can you call them entitled? and you had the nerve to mention how he got a bunch of less talented guys to win? you are crazy or stupid if you choose to ignore at the mcdonalds all americans he had...lay off the old man tough guy coolaid
Honestly, with him being a coach's son, Coach Knight expected more from him in terms of discipline and basketball ability. Steve Alford best exemplified this.
Well he “wrecked” his shoulder as a sophmore. Junior year once healthy he shot well. Senior year? Lights out. I think a few other things kept him out of the nba other than that first year he was drafted. I did always feel he could have been a situational shooting peice on the right club.
Not true. The best teachers are those who can get the best out of you, and get you to see it, and prepare you to perform even if they are not there. His players look like shell shocked robots, which explains why very few of them made it to the next level. Being harsh is not synonymous with discipline or great teacher, necessarily
googz21 that's a bunch of bull crap. There has been plenty of successful coaches, more so than knight. And they didn't coach like a horses ass. Knight was only a great coach when he had great players. He averaged a championship once every ten years. Only his nut sack carries still believe in him,and continue to take on his char as cter, and decency, or the lack there of. Top 50 players don't want to come to hickville USA. It's 2020,let him go,the longer you hang on to him,and old traditions:you won't attract the best players.
Aaron Stansberry he got great players because great players wanted to play for knight.. probably because he was one of the best basketball coaches of all time. It’s not rocket science. He demanded you play hard 100 percent of the time and show respect. One of the best to coach the game PERIOD. He was coaching boys into men and preparing them for the real world as much as (probably more so) than for the nba. Things like getting good grades and being on time still matter here in “Hicksville”
Yeah, well, Mark Knight was a lot meaner than Bobby, his identical twin. It's no wonder those two famously butted heads when it came to decision making.
I don't understand why they Censor the word God but they don't Censor damn and the JC words aren't censored. I've grown up feeling the GD words are worse than the F word.
@Cavalcade of Fred Couples Don't like Knight or Trump? You must be one of those snowflakes that has a problem with Alpha-Males. Should Knight have sung lullabies while they practiced? Maybe treat them to some milk and cookies after practice, maybe even take them to Chucky Cheese to pass out participation trophies.😀😀😀
@Calvacade of Fred Couples yea and wooden didn’t have to recruit because his players were bought big difference, knight had a 98 percent graduation rate and ran a clean program his entire time at iu
This is how Coach K use to coach. Social media has changed the dynamics of coaching. Do you know IU's graduation rate under the General? Google it...98% during his tenure...compared to the national average of about 40%.Turning boys into men takes a General.
@@Nya48506 yall be dick riding the tutors with all these graduation rate highlights. they used to toss out grades to these dudes...especially when they were winning and student-athlete academic support had zero accountability back then. get outta here with the grad rate brags...especially when this dude needed constant good PR. of course they gassed up the academic support program to ensure they were winning off the court. and you deadass called this man the general like you actually know him lol stop drinking the coolaid..his name is bobby
