The Chinese Wall is an anomalous feature in the Bob Marshall Wilderness in Montana. A 12 mile-long 1,000 foot tall escarpment jutting straight up out of the ground. This route first takes you under the wall on the Continental Divide Trail, then back along the top of the wall completely off-trail. You'll be route-finding on top of the Chinese Wall and navigating around cliffs that break up the ridge. Below the wall you'll be rewarded with towering cliffs and above it you'll have about two days of massive 360 degree views.

Thank you so much for posting this! My wife and I just got back from doing this yesterday (July 7-11). Your path is spot-on. We actually cut it a little short by going up Larch Hill pass for a total of 62 miles. We made the 18 mile trek from Haystack to Benchmark in a single day, but could have split it up. Water is definitely an issue. The small creek you cross on your first bushwhack was the only water between larch hill pass and the pond below Cliff Mountain (which needs to be approached from the saddle between salt and cliff). The creeks in between Salt and Cliff were all dry. The pond at cliff looks like it will dry up in the next few weeks depending on rain. The next water source was at the base of Spinx peak. The scramble at the end was somewhat difficult with heavy packs. I’d recommend to folks that they consider lowering their packs with rope unless they’re very confident in their scrambling. We only saw a single grizzly, but did get charged by a mountain goat 😅. Great trip and your video and track download (Gaia GPS with the Nat Geo trails unlimited layer) was perfect. Thanks for making this possible!

I'm not gonna lie, watching this made me cry due to all the burn damage. In 1979 my uncle took me back packing and it was amazing. Even the color of the water has changed because it was a true blue back then. We were able to camp next to the wall near the head of a creek from a small pond. The water was so cold and refreshing that I drank until the water was splashing in my stomach. The next morning we climbed a goat trail to the top of the ridge and bushwacked our way down the ridge back to the trail. Took us 7 days

Felt the same way visiting the Caribou Wilderness in true Northern California after it was completely burned by the Dixie Fire.

Thanks for the information. I am going to "Fastpack" into My Lake day 1, and then make double back on Day 2. Should be epic. I checked out your channel and website, great content.

Loved this. Just got back from the Bob a couple weeks ago. We came-in horse packing from the Silver Tip trail head along the Spotted River and made our way down to a place called Brushy Park (and old outfitters camp along the White River west of Salt Mountain that still had those artifacts). We did go back up to Larch Hill Pass along the White River looking for a trail that would take us to the westward-facing side of the wall - but couldn't find anything that we didn't have to bushwhack. We did come to a spot spot along the CDT where we could see the north side of Salt mountain and stopped there where the CDT continued down the east side of the wall - and there did seem to be a slope around the northern tip of the wall heading down to the base on the west side. That might of been the way. But we ran out of time and had to head back to Brushy Park before dark. Can anyone please confirm this? My goal is to visit the site where my dad's plane collided into the westward side of the wall at Salt Mountain (about 75' from the summit). It was a number of years ago - but I'm hoping to find some fragments from that wreckage being a small, Mooney airplane that had aluminum parts. That would be at the westward base of Salt Mountain. Thanks for any info - we'll try again next year.

Drop me off the Chinese Wall, and peel my fingers off the rim. Come unglued while in midair and land to reform, limb by limb.

My map shows no camping from cliff mountain to salt mountain and a couple miles east. Is that correct as far as you know?
