I was an academic (in commerce), if the study wants to reduce harm for children, the study participants should be paedophiles (e.g., how to control the urge) not the general public. Also the research ethics approval process doesn’t normally question the ethics (validity) of the research question, it is trying to make sure the process of recruiting and managing research participants are properly conducted.
