He was more a Beukeboom, James Patrick, Cam Neeley type player who was skilled first, hitting second, and could scrap as well.. Tough guy though who wasnt playing that long ago, retired what, maybe 12 years ago. PROBIE though? Just beloved by every fan of every team. Unless he was fighting Kocur or maybe Domi, he was the guy i wanted to see come out on top. Just a legend and a man amongst men

Unlike pusses like Vukota, shaved primates like Brashear and goons like Dave Brown, Probie was all class. When he and guys like Kocur stopped playing I was pretty much done. When a guy who beats the holy hell out of people for a living and is “classy” about it and truly is such a nice guy and dies young truly hurts your heart man. I think about his I friends, family his kids and his wife. He gave up his life for his teammates and did it with classHe also did it for the fans. . That’s just rare man. He really was a “nice guy” like he said. People forget hockey is a very competitive physical sport and even opposing teammates will grab a beer after fighting each other. It’s a paid job. It’s like porn. It’s a job. It Probert gave to foundations visiting dying 5 year olds ,who does that? I’ll be 51 in January so I saw probert live and he was one in a trillion. His heart was always in the right place and I loved the fact he didn’t showboat and did everything with class with his teammates, his fans, kids he didn’t know who had terminal illnesses, a class act. He was the total package and the guts to just destroy goalies and such a calm nice guy off the ice. It’s still heartbreaking. I don’t cry ever shy I never cried for another player it’s weird but I cried hard when he died and it’s like you said he was one in a trillion on every level. I’m happy you enjoyed my comment I can’t help it the guy was a special kind of special and I’m it going to holdback how I felt and still feel about him. Stay Gold man and enjoy the hockey season. Agree 100%!. They weren't going to beat Edmonton that year (I think Detroit was the only team that took a game from them on that Cup run) but he was, IMHO, Detroit's Conn Smythe candidate if they would have. One of the greatest all around seasons ever!

He was actually quite skilled, was an all star and broke Gordie Howe’s playoff points record for Detroit. And widely regarded as the greatest hockey fighter of all time.

Very, I don't know where the fuck I was when he passed away. Just recently I watched a doc on him when I saw that he passed away and it was gut wrenching. His wife had to deal with a lot when it seemed like Bob was putting it all together. Just sad.

I agree 100% There was a time when the Wings were just Stevie Y and Probert. Wasn't sure who I was more excited to see haha he was larger than life and as an Oilers fan from way back then he is the GOAT no disrespect to Semenko, Brown and Laraques!

I think for a fighter to be in the HOF he has to possess more than just modest skill. I shouldn't use Clark Gillies as a comparison, but he was as intimidating as Probie while scoring 30 goals] and 75 points a year, and with less than 100 PIM per season. If you want to make the case for player who fought as much as Bob but was also more than just a fighter, Terry O'Reilly would be a good pick.

Yup, Probie was a popular player, good fighter, and most importantly, CHARISMATIC. I may be biased as I'm from Windsor!

Probert definitely won the majority of his fights was one of the all-time toughest. Just a little fact-checking: he never fought May (Alan or Brad) or Dale Hunter. In their three scraps, Probert never beat Kocur.

And protected the other guys all those years.

He was awesome against almost everyone, the only player i ever saw that had his number was John Kordic.

@@billijomaynard8924 Probert and Kordic only fought once, and Kordic backpedaled from Probert the entire time, eventually allowing the officials to step in and break them up. You may be thinking of another player, since Kordic definitely did not have Probert's number.

He made an all star team and it wasnt a charity case like it was with John Scott. Dude was a 29 goal scorer skating mostly grinder minutes (though he did play on one of their PP lines) and even got a few selke votes one year. Even though he was a mountain in his day and had a penchant for being in the right place for rebounds he wasn't just a big body tap-in guy either, he had a sneaky accurate wrister and deceptively soft hands. My favorite stick actually had a Probert pro curve blade, so he was at the very least good enough to sell sticks at one point in his career. He got pigeonholed and his lifestyle caught up with him later in his career, but anyone who says he was just a goon never actually watched him play.

Oh come on Rasputin. Probert pounded Brown AFTER Brown flatout jumped him. The first Probert-Brash fight Probert rag dolled him. Later when Probert was on the downside Brash beat him a couple times but Brash was in his prime then. The only Probert-Wilson fight I remember seeing wasn't much of anything. Neither guy had the upper hand. Probert is the all time champ, hands down.
